Our course did a big renovation last year, and they decided not to put yardages on sprinkler heads, or reinstall ball washer. You see a lot of different courses, is this a trend? There is also less drinking water on the course.

There is a contingent of people, especially golf architecture aficionados, who feel that items like numerical yardage markers, bushes or stakes to indicate yardages, benches, trash cans, directional signs, hole number signs, ballwashers, ropes or stakes to keep carts away from greens etc. are all needless clutter and should be completely removed. One of these folks got in charge of the golf committee at a former club of mine and had all of that removed. The hole # signs and "next tee this way" directional signs came back eventually after some outside events and unaccompanied guest rounds where people had no idea where they were going between holes.

Personally I don't care either way, since I prefer to use a wet towel to clean my ball, use my own GPS, generate minimal if any trash on the course, etc. but I think it's nice to have a bench near the tee on a par 3 or other pace chokepoints on a course, and some idea where the next tee with help from a sign is if the course routing isn't obvious and I'm not familiar with the course.

Stand alone ball washers on tees are definitely going away and soon to be extinct. They're the buggy whip of the golf industry. They cost too much to buy and maintain. I can't think of a single new course built in the last 20 years I have played that chose to install tee box ball washers. Most carts tend to have the washers on them now anyway too.

Agreed. Seems like covid got rid of the majority of them on public courses, at least the ones I play. Many of them were absolutely gross/smelled awful and weren't serviced often enough anyway, so no real loss.

For you I would recommend trying to get to Munkle Brewing Company which is in downtown. They are kind of known for Belgian and old world style beer.

Ugh. Been sitting at the RV dealer for two and a half hours while they install the new kitchen faucet in Bessie. Figured it would take an hour to 90 minutes.

I was just told that the faucet I provided has male ends, and the old faucet has female ends, so they're trying to find an adapter from a local supplier. No idea why there are two different types of faucets.

If they can't find one hopefully they can seal off the kitchen water line so I can hit the road and deal with it in Charleston. Unlike a house, an RV doesn't have a shutoff at the sink. If the lines can't be plugged I'll have no water in the RV.

Either way it's going to be a late arrival in Charleston.

Double ugh. I left the RV park in Augusta at 8:30 am this morning, and just finished setting up camp in Mount Pleasant. The dealer ran to Home Depot, and luckily found adapters that would work with the faucet. The other option would have been to buy a faucet from the dealer, but they were out of stock. Wound up taking over four hours. At least it's done with. I hope. Don't see any leaks. Lol.

Long four hour drive to Charleston. Rolling into town in the early evening on a Friday meant heavy rush hour traffic. Took me 45 minutes to reach the RV park from a few miles outside of town on I-26. Mostly uneventful drive on I-20 and I-26. I shaved off a couple of dozen miles by taking several state highways instead of traveling all the way to Columbia to pick up I-26. Always fun driving on narrow state roads with no shoulders. Don't know if it saved any time, but it did save a few gallons of gas.

Scary moment along the way. I stopped at a rest stop to use the restroom and stretch my legs. When I walked to the back of the coach I noticed that the floor was wet. I had a plastic gallon container of Arnold Palmer that was half empty. The thing has never tipped over, but today it decided to fall on its side. The liquid was sticky AP on the floor. I noticed that the container was bulging. Don't know if you know this, but once AP is opened it starts to ferment, releasing CO2. Bouncing around must have given it a good shake, because the container had a noticeable bulge. I opened it to take a swig, and the minute I started unscrewing the cap it blew like a champagne cork. The plastic cap flew just past my left eye and hit the ceiling. Pretty sure I would have had a serious eye injury if that thing would have hit my eye. Wow

Not a lot of options for RV parks in the area, so I'm stuck at one with an uneven gravel pad and two trees blocking the satellite. Had to dig out the portable dish.

The original plan was to arrive before 3 pm and then head out for a Friday beer and bite to eat. Too late for that now, so I'll make a sandwich and crack open another goody from the stash. Watching the final two hours of the Chevron. I'll eat out on Sunday while I'm out doing the tourist thing.

While I was killing time at the RV dealer I booked an RV park in New Bern, NC for two weeks out. I also managed to find a mid morning round at RiverTowne GC tomorrow. Don't particularly like playing that late, especially on a weekend, but I'll show up early as usual and hope there's a no-show.

In addition to the round at the Links Course at Wild Dunes Resort on Monday, I have a round at Charleston National on Tuesday. I also had Dunes West on my list, but the tee sheet was packed.

What dealer? Shout out to them. 👍🏼 I’d be writing a nice review for the dealer if I were you. What goes around comes around, and it sounds like they went well above and beyond to get you fixed up. Most places will immediately reject customer supplied parts for this exact reason.

Rivertowne and Stono Ferry are pretty good in the area. So is Daniel Island….great club and scene there.

I loved Chas National in the early ‘00s, probably played it 20x. I’ve heard it isn’t what it used to be…Hope I’m wrong. The muni is a different scene, and really great too.

Ping. Play Your Best.

Camping World in Augusta. Yeah, they went out of their way to be helpful, starting with getting me scheduled on short notice. Most dealers are booked solid for weeks. The service manager himself ran to Home Depot with the new faucet in hand to ensure that the right adapters were purchased.

It was my fault that the faucet didn't have the right connectors. I figured that all RV faucets would be the same. What really frosted us was that there was a paper insert in the box that basically said to contact them if one needs a pair of adapters. Would have been easy to simply include them in the box. Oy.

Played Stono Ferry and Kiawah Ocean during my first visit three years ago.

I looked at the muni, but it was also fully booked. Seems quite apparent that the city doesn't have enough public courses.

I also looked at two courses at Kiawah that I haven't played, Oak Point and Cougar Point. They're both charging $315. Ouch.

Mostly enjoyable morning. Still not cut out for crowded weekend golf, though. Mostly cloudy skies helped keep the temperature in check. Arrived over 2 hours early, and was able to join a group missing a member. Shaved an hour and twenty minutes off the schedule. The packed course sent groups off of both sides, so the decent pace on the front became a grind on the back. Hate when you arrive on a teebox and the group ahead is still hitting.

RiverTowne Country Club today. The parkland/marshland layout was designed by Arnold Palmer. Looked and felt like Arnold's handiwork. Plenty of water and marshes, and some weird green shapes. It routes through a housing development, but the homes weren't overly intrusive.

No elevation changes in the lowcountry. Fairway bunkering was pretty good, but I saw a handful of spots where he missed. Lol. Greenside was also pretty good. Water in play on all 18 holes, although a couple would take a pretty bad shot to come into play. Seven holes with left/right movement, but only one dogleg.

Challenging off the tee with trees, water, bunkers, and a few forced carries. Felt tight in spots. Minor misses would catch the light rough. No room for big misses. Wet or OB. Approaches were moderately tough. Decent bunkering, and those odd shaped greens meant pins in some small landing areas. Greens had gentle contouring and slope. Pretty boring actually. Up and downs were tricky primarily due to the crummy turf conditions. Poor lies galore.

Par 3s were very good with plenty of trouble. Forced carries on three and water in play on all four. I liked the 17th with the marsh in front of the very shallow green. Variety of length was good playing GW to FW. Par 5s were decent, but no risk/reward. The short 3rd and 16th were reachable, but not a lot of trouble near the green. The sole short 4 was meh.

Conditions were subpar for the price. Apparently they had a rough winter. Fairways were patchy with plenty of iffy patches. Rough wasn't bad. Bunkers were fine. Greens were poor. Bumpy and slow. Speed was no more than 9.

Played the Blue tees at 6267 yds (70.5/134). Thought about adding a few Gold tees, but I know that Arnold's layout are tough enough. Driver was spotty early, but came around on the back. Irons and wedges were solid. Couldn't putt on those greens. One birdie and six bogies. Shot of the day was actually making a putt on the short par 3 8th after sticking a PW to 12'. Highlight of the day was getting out early, and discovering that non-members are actually allowed to walk. Shocked I say.

I think 6 cows here. Very nice looking course. Greens need work. Like to see more risk on the short par 5s. Nice that they allow walking, but no walking rate. The $136 weekend rate was much too high. These $100+ rounds along the coast are budget busters. Lol. Tough course, and very playable, but not a must play.

Lol. Feels like a normal day. Golf, beer, dinner, shower, nap. Craft Draught in Mt Pleasant. Decent taproom with 26 national brews. Enjoying an Ommegang Three Philosophers Belgian Quad on nitro. The nitro is fantastic.

Another top notch serving of mole pablano. Carmen y Juan in Mt Pleasant. Thick and very tasty. Could use a little more kick, but that's a minor nit. Salsa and margarita were both very good. The chips were also very good. Appear to be made in house. We've talked mole recently, and it really makes me wonder why South Carolina can produce an excellent mole, but Florida hasn't figured it out. Lol.

Arg - where (area, region, city, etc) in your travels do you think is the best bang for your buck in golf?

Hate to say it but it's Chicago. Close to 200 courses within 75 minutes of downtown with only a handful over $100. I think there are only two over $150.

Michigan has some great golf that doesn't break the bank for the most part, but you'll have to travel a bit to hit the better courses.

Dallas has quite a few quality courses that aren't overly expensive for the most part. Of course there are a few that are over the top, e.g. PGA Frisco.

I thought Augusta/Aiken was solid, but the number of courses is low.

Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Bend, Pinehurst, Phoenix, and Hilton Head have plenty of decent courses, but they're very pricey, especially during peak season.

Took a trip a couple of years ago to Chicago and played 5 courses you recommended. I would agree - couldn’t believe the quality of golf and how reasonable it was.

I live in Dallas and would agree with that as well.

Decisions, decisions, decisions. I was in town three years ago. Was it really that long ago? After a round at Stono Ferry I headed into the city for a quick visit, and a big bite to eat. Got a small sampler at Lewis Barbecue, and then headed over to the Tattooed Moose for one of the best sandwiches I've ever had, a duck club. Thought about hitting both today, but Lewis was closest, and after a healthy lunch I'm too stuffed for one of those huge duck clubs. Hopefully I can grab on on Tuesday.

Lewis didn't disappoint. The ribs were fantastic. Meaty and tender with a good rub. Brisket was mixed. The end piece was nice and fatty, but the interior slice was a bit lean. Their hot link is excellent with a nice kick. The green chili corn bread pudding is excellent. Sauces were OK. The original one was decent, but more of a vinegar sauce. The Secret Sauce was different. Tangy had a bit of a kick, but also quite thin. The green chili sauce was good with the hot link. I was eyeing their Sunday special, a chicken fried steak. Don't come to a barbecue joint for steak, but it sure looked tasty. Still consider it a must visit in town for Q.

Final stop of the day before heading back to the RV park to catch the final round of the Chevron is Lo Fi Brewing. Very small brewery in a warehouse with only a handful of brews. Their Belgian Tripel is very tasty with a heavy banana taste. They don't have a dishwasher, so everything is served in plastic cups. Shame. Lol.

Pleasant, but expensive round of golf today. Warm and breezy. Could barely keep my hat on during the final two holes along the ocean. Joined a threesomes as the second group out, and made it around in just under four hours. Very surprised that the resort course allowed walking.

Wild Dunes Resort's Links Course. Ha! Two holes along the ocean do not make a links course. After the last hurricane the par 5 18th was shortened to a par 3. Other than the par 3 16th that played along the marshes near Cedar Creek, it was a typical parkland layout in a resort. Thankfully most of the homes were tucked behind the trees. Didn't mind the beautiful homes along the ocean, though. The course was designed by Tom Fazio, which came as a big surprise given the light bunkering. I was expecting dead flat, but a number of holes are built on dunes, and have some modest contouring. A handful of greens were also raised. Fairway bunkering was very light. Greenside was a little better. Water in play on thirteen holes, and a handful more with red stakes areas near the dense treeline.

Moderately difficult off the tee for the most part with fairly narrow tree-lined fairways. Minor misses would catch the light rough, but not a lot of room before the big trouble starts. Big misses could get lucky and clank off a tree, but otherwise they were lost in the junk or OB.

Approaches were also moderately difficult. Many of the greens were on the small side. Greens had a surprising amount of contouring and slope. They weren't super challenging, but for a resort course they were better than average. Up and downs were a fair test, especially on the holes with elevated greens.

The five par 3s were pretty good. Plenty of trouble with water in play on four of them, but you'd really have to hit a massive hook on the 18th to find Dewees Inlet. Variety of length was poor playing 6i to 4i. The three par 5s were meh. The 14th was reachable, but not much risk. The sole short par 4 10th was OK only because finding a flat spot in the undulating fairway was nearly impossible.

Conditions were excellent. Didn't see many blemishes in the fairways. Rough was cut low. Bunkers were nicely groomed with sufficient sand. Greens looked great and were rolling at 10.

Played a Black/Blue combo at 6225 yds on the par 70 layout (70.9/134). Driver was very good. Irons were spotty. Wedges almost saved the day. Putter was going where I aimed it, but kept reading too much break. One birdie and five bogies. The 15' birdie putt on the par 5 5th was nice, but the shot of the day was the high flop on the par 3 18th. Pushed the teeshot pin high (way) right, and had 35 yds to the left center pin. The strong wind was directly in my face, so I hit a half lob wedge that would normally be a 50 yd pitch, and it landed dead 3' from the cup.

Going to be nice and go with 6 cows. Big fan of Tom, but this one is a little monotonous. My expectations certainly didn't help given that I thought it was going to be a seaside links layout. Tough course if you're not a str8 hitter, but otherwise it's just another parkland layout. Needs a few more bunkers, a short and long par 3, and a risk/reward par 5. No walking rate, and the $305 weekday rate was simply robbery. Half the price would still be overpriced. It's a good looking, playable course, but I'd spend the extra cash and drive down to the Ocean course at Kiawah.

Stopped at Sullivan's Island Lighthouse on the way back to the RV park. Not the prettiest lighthouse I've seen.

I also looked at two courses at Kiawah that I haven't played, Oak Point and Cougar Point. They're both charging $315. Ouch.

I played Osprey Point two years ago. The walking rate was ~$295. The conditions were so good that the course looked fake. 😄

If you end up in the West Ashley area and have a hankering for prime rib, give Ireland's Own/Jagerhaus Pub a try.

Arg, I know you have said you use Golfweek best of lists but do you use any other sites or even forums to review courses you are looking to book?   Like in the case of Wild Dunes is it a course you just really wanted to play even at the $305 rate or would there have been reviews or info that would have swayed you against it?
