I was shocked at how over rated the Kapalua Plantation course turned out to be

Recommended Posts

I agree and disagree on comments made on the plantation course. I played it years back, not since the reno and honestly was not impressed.  Blind shots are a pain if you never played it before, but I was playing with someone who had played it 5-6 times so had good direction for first time.  It has great views but do I think it is worth the $$$.... I do not.  Its like all courses that hold big events the rates jump up to $400+  and IMHO the course is not worth that price.

I would say  Manele Golf Course or Mekena if possible.

My only issue is with the OP's basic statement. Kapalua is only over-rated in his mind. It is not over-rated per se. Lots of people who have played there obviously think the opposite. So for him to say he was shocked at how over-rated it is, is kind of presumptuous. He can think whatever he likes about it, opinions being free.

All ratings are subjective, and I recognize that lots of people rate the Plantation course highly.  Saying a course is or is not over-rate is 100% subjective.

I'm glad we played it and wish we had employed a fore caddie.  I will not be playing it again.

Fair enough. But dont tell everyone else that you are the one guy with the definitive opinion.

I don't think he was, as we know all ones opinion is "very subjective" on a course.  Even in rankings that come out every year it starts that annual "discussion"  😃

I will actually be in Maui tomorrow afternoon for a week, so thought this was timely thread update.  I was in debate of playing it again, still am honestly. Pretty sure will not, as I played it once and I don't recall it "wow'ing" me.   Not a bad course as noted but I am thinking I would rather play one the others I noted for the $$.

I don't mind blind tee shots. You can always run the cart up to get a look see really quick before teeing off!

I am at 509 courses played, took the last 4.5 years off (only 2 new courses). I am ready to get back after it!

I wouldn't call PB 11 blind.  It's wide open.  Plantation blind shots are over a hill and you have no idea what's on the other side.   That's why we decided to drive up the fairway and look before teeing off.

If the tee shots are that bad, shouldn't you be doing that anyway to make sure your landing area is clear?

Try the other course at Kapalua... the Bay course.  It is very fun for a lot less $$$.

Plantation is very similar to Tobacco Road in that some local knowledge and planning are very valuable in order to maximize enjoyment of the experience. Despite wide open appearance, the Plantation course requires being able to hit driver on proper line to utilize or neutralize slopes for best approaches into greens. Some players are most comfortable when best shot for hole is very quickly and readily apparent, others like different features that require different strategies, that’s not a knock on either type of player or course, just differences in opinion.
As a former state of Hawaii resident, personally think Turtle Bay (both courses) is most over hyped on the islands…yet, put quite succinctly “opinions differ” 😂

I would agree about Turtle Bay, I played it 3 years ago and it was pathetic for the price and the ratings it gets.

Played the Plantation course December 20, 2021 and enjoyed it but way over priced for what you get. It was right before the Sentry Tournament and there was a 3-4 club wind that day. I don't think I would ever play it again. It was $400 US per round.

For a course to be overrated I think you have to state what is rated.

If you say Augusta is overrated that doesn’t tell us anything. If you say I don’t believe that Augusta is a top 5 course then a discussion can happen.

Is Kapalua overrated? No idea. I just flipped through golf mags (could have been golf week idk) rankings of top public and they had it in the 50s. It all depends what rating you are referring to. Top 100? No probably not. Top 50 public? Very well could be. Unfortunately, I haven’t played it so can’t provide an opinion based on experience.

So why is the Plantation course rated so highly???????

Watching TV golf easily misleads viewers.  I've played every course on Maui, many times.  The Plantation over 30 times, and under all conditions, the worst though was a few times in wind and rain.   When there's NO wind at Kapalua, the course has no defense against even a good golfer.  My lowest score in benign conditions was 73 and "Regular" tees were playing over 6800yds.  My last score was 78, but my worst score was years back, 85, when the wind was howling across the course.  Hell, when the wind is blowing even nearby Kapalua Bay course will eat your lunch.  That said, I was there recently, before the tournament; they slowed the greens to offset the undulations.

I think people use the term "overrated" to describe a lot of things, but they mistakenly factor in the cost when doing so.

To me, a course being overrated means that the course itself is not as described or portrayed to be. Price shouldn't even be in the conversation. It should be centered around conditioning, layout, and other playability factors.

Overrated is completely different than saying something is overpriced. One example I played somewhat recently was TPC Scottsdale Stadium. I think the course is great. Perfect condition, fun yet somewhat challenging layout, "famous holes" (15, 16, 17 combo), and so on. However, I don't think it's worth the money they charge, and I wouldn't pay those prices to play it again. Therefore, I'd call it overpriced but not overrated.

I played the course several years ago when at a meeting. The reason I played it was seeing it on TV and loved the scenery.

As posted before, I would more consider it overpriced than overrated. I knew that the fairways were wide open from the telecasts. I didn’t consider it to be the greatest design ever, but a well groomed resort course.
