Give Jeff truck advice (you know, again)

I often come to the 19th hole for my various musings on cars. I buy cars ALMOST as frequently as new iron sets. But anyway here is the deal

I currently have a modified Rav4 TRD that i use mostly for trails and snow drifting etc. I have posted pictures of it here a few times... It's a 2020 with very low mileage. I owned the first one in Quebec actually. Because of this and the insane market for used cars (thank you, semiconductor shortages...), the dealer can buy it back and sell it for almost full price.

This means, i can get a 2022 Tacoma TRD PRO for basically 10,000$ cash , and then maintaining the same payments (albeit reset to original financing length, adding back the 2 years)

The Tacoma TRD pro is basically my dream car. I am nuts NOT to do this right?

Car guys like cars, no one can stop you. I will say this though.

In ‘97 my biz had a bang up year, car guy bought a new ‘97 E320. What a beautiful car it was, and how hot I looked driving it was never in doubt.  I no longer have it.

24 years later I have my dream car again. It’s a 2011 base model Prius paid off 7 years ago at 0% interest. Just paid off my wife’s car as well, so we have two dream cars.

You’ve mentioned you got a promotion and the payment won’t hurt you, but nothing burns my muffin like paying car payments.

Long story short, my dream at this age is completely different than it was. Looking back I wasted that money on the Benz.

Now my dream car is a 2 seat convertible AMG or similar, but I need to be even older than I am now.

Is gas mileage any concern with the Taco?

Nah not really, i only drive like 10k KMs per year.

My main area of interest is winter driving. Have read the Taco is great but coming from a torque vectoring AWD it might not be as good in the snow and ice

In the deep stuff. Taco has far more clearance.

I'm almost as much a fanatic with cars as with clubs. Currently gaming (oops, driving hahahahaha) an Audi A8L. Kinda big (two set of clubs fit in the trunk!) but shockingly fast. Almost completely voice-activated - I talk to my car. Don't punch destinations into the car with buttons, just hit the voice button and tell the nav system where to go. In fact don't even need an address - can say "where is the nearest gas station", "where is the nearest Chinese restaurant" and it pops options up. Stick my phone in the center console, and it not only charges it wirelessly, but interfaces with the car. Beeps when I get a text message, and will actually do text-to-voice and read the text out loud over the speaker system. The freaking thing is less a car than it is a computer that happens to have wheels on it. Plus the heated (and, I kid you not, AC in the summer) seats with a massage function are the bees knees.

I make a decent living, but live very frugally. Only really splurge on - golf and cars - but they are worth it to splurge on.

IMO, pull the trigger Jeff.

I'm kind of the same way. I don't spend a lot on most things. My house and my cars are typically well below what financial types tell me i can "afford" whatever that means LOL.

I keep telling myself one day i just have to buy something i want other than golf clubs (which are relatively inexpensive at the end of the day).

The Tacoma TRD Pro is like my version of a Mercedes.

Yeah i probably have to do it

Can I interest you in a '99 Saturn sedan? All the driving fun without those pesky nuisances like automatic transmission and power steering.

I'll even throw in the crank down windows and duct tape detailing at a nominal charge. I just can't guarantee the rear bumper will remain affixed should you experience "extreme driving conditions."

Think about it and let me know dude. This beauty is only about ten hours away...

Jeff I'm not sure how big you are and if you've sat inside a Taco but they are TINY. I wanted one cause it wasn't quite a full size truck but still a truck but when I sat in one I was disappointed. For some reference I've had a few Rav4's as rentals and they're much more comfortable. Then again the resale on a Taco is stupid good and always will be compared to a Rav4.

Won't really sway you to any other truck because they all have issues these days, the new Tundra looks super nice and I'm considering handing over my F150 for that but there will apparently be a wait list until 2023 so that's something to consider if the Tundra is an option.

I've used pickups of this size since '96.  As above, they are not a good fit for a big guy.  I'm a medium, no problem, but much bigger, hmm, not so good.  My current is a Nissan Frontier, 4wd, 6 cylinder, 20mpg is the best it will do.  I have a 200 lb tractor weight I put in the back when there is a threat (rare) of snow.  My experience has been very good, these are tough little buggers, but I also have a couple of big old pickups for truly heavy duty beating.

I've had at least a dozen Toyota trucks going back to the '80s, all 4WD and still have one today.  Most of them have seen 200k miles before being retired for another one.  Sort of like @Petethreeput, my dream cars today are the ones with no payment and low insurance costs.  My wife's car is paid off and so is my truck.  I will be hard pressed to make this current truck last till I'm fertilizer but I'm sure gonna try.

Sequoia Trd … good luck

i love Toyota trucks

I have a Sequoia now and had a 4 runner before that

4 runner had 280,000 km when traded in … Sequoia at 363k now … zero mechanical issues in either truck … just batteries

I like the Sequoia so much I’m getting a replacement within 12 months

Looking at a 2 year old tacoma trd pro right now. The only critique I have is the model I'm looking at is its a 5 foot bed and I really would like a 6.  It's pretty handsome and while I would rather buy American,  it seems completely insane to spend 60-70k on a well equipped used model. Also the cabin space is a tiny bit small. This is valid.
