Opinions on best Vokey wedge series

I have a 6 SM5 year old Vokey gap wedge and looking to replace this next golf season.   Just wondering if different series feel or look different, May smaller profile ?

Love my sm6 vokeys. They were the raw versions. I put them in CLR a few years ago and now they have this awesome patina.

I really liked the shape of the SM6 series. Each series since has become or appeared more rounded with softer lines and a more circular shape from the address position. I’m not a fan of that. On a side note the same thing has happened to Titleist iron shapes as well-which is unfortunate.

200 series and it’s not close. 
 

200 series tour issue with CC or sm4 grooves  ( same grooves different stampings  ) are the holy grail of vokey wedges.

I just realized I’ve always preferred the evens (4,6,8). I guess I can deflate the SM9 balloon.

I've owned Vokeys from SM2 on in every series, and the only model I didn't like were the SM6/SM7 lower lofted clubs like 46-52.

Agreed on the 200 series, but the SM4’s are not far behind and had a few more options from memory. 
 

I miss the gun metal finish too

I like my 46 but the 50 (SM7) has a mind of its own, it’s really hard to flight constantly. I had a similar issue with the 46 in the SM6’s.

Those red saw SM2 were unreal, had something like an oil can finish and still wish I could play those to this day. The cc grooves were good, but between the red saw and mack daddy wedges at the time it's a very nostalgic period changing balls after every wedge, and ripping the ball back from 20 yards out. Good times

I've continuously tried to find a better lob wedge than the 258.08 and just can't, despite how great all of the ones since then have looked . . . 

 

The 258.08 may wind up back in the bag for yet another season . . .

Agree.   I had a set of non conforming Vega irons that you’d have to pick “ ball hair “ out of the groves in between shots.   Would Be fine white long strings of cover.  I could pull back a 5 iron.  I’d still own those if they weren’t illegal in state and USga stuff.

Played Vokeys for a couple decades. Last ones were SM7s and SM8s. Tried others over the years, Mizzy, Cleveland, Cally (all solid), even PXG (blah, disappointing). Always returned to Vokeys as my go to. 

 

Except this past year - tried Miura for the first time. Not sure I've ever played something so perfectly designed, so perfectly balanced. So versatile. Wedges are the most delicate, precise clubs in the bag, and deeply personal, but for me - well, it felt like the Miuras were just designed for my swing. Sorry Bob - you got kicked out of the bag.

The SM 2’s. 2009 vintage I think.  Greatest grooves ever.  The grinds were great too. Bought extra 58,12 M grind when they changed the rules.  Still my favorite wedge ever, my last one has a little wear but it still gets used.  Great club.

The original 200 Series is still the nicest shape to my eye. More of a classic teardrop shape, and the most 588-ish of them all. The stamping looked more clean, too, with the wings up near the fat part of the head, subdued Vokey Design stampings and without any weird and wonderful art deco nonsense on the back, the SM7's bulging toplines, or monolithic grooves across the back of the club like the SM8 and the Death Star's equator. I even prefer the old school sole stamp with the loft alone.

 

The SM5s that I've got in my bag currently are the best-shaped ones since the 200s in my opinion, with the CoC grooves as a bonus. The only downside of the SM5s was the faff to get hold of raw ones; something which was never an issue with the good old 200s.

I still have a 58-10 sm7 in the bag (It may have a slightly higher vertical COG than previous models). And I still use my SM6 54-14 of lush courses or soft sand, but ever since I got a couple Zipcores, the Vokeys aren't my first choice for gap or sand wedge.

Here are my old faithfuls, both with a year or two's play under their belts and, well, self-evidently not having been the subject of any sort of refurb. The 56.14 was a bunker club that just worked for me without needing any sort of grinding, very much like the old 56-degree 588 was too, and the old 60.04 sole was brilliant. As much as I like the T Grinds and the L Grinds on the newer Vokey models, the old 200 was perfect right out of the box. Even though it's wide, you could open it up and lay the club flat off hardpan. It's a shame they don't offer it in the current lineup.

 

Far and away the best shape and look in my opinion. As others have said, these, with CoC grooves, would be the holy grail of wedges, along with Tour Zip Groove 588 RTGs and a reissue of the Gorge-grooved Eye 2s in beryllium.

EVENS. SM4 felt like butter. SM6 had great shape, and the SM8s so far are the hybrid of the two for me. I will probably have my SM8's for a while, which is why i paid extra for the tour s400s in them.

Size wise are they all pretty much same size.? I find my SM5 gap wedge a little large and would prefer slightly smaller profile

These were a good bit of kit too. The same 200 teardrop shape, but a bit chunkier and thicker. Sadly no longer allowed, but as alluded to above, it was good while it lasted, larking about picking out old balata balls from the practice bag and being able to hit shots from about 90 yards that pitched in the back fringe and ended up down at the front edge of the green. Eye 2 square grooves were all the rage when I was a teenager, but they had nothing on these. The face was like a cheese grater.

About ten years ago,i had 5 200 series and then went sm2,x forged,etc.Came back at sm5,sm6,really nice and sm7,nice again.A good 567 with a spine aligned shaft at d3 is a great wedge.I happened to sell the Vokeys for way more than i paid mid 2021 and found as new bargain priced 52, 58ff Zipcores that the owners didnt want/like that are just great for me!🙂

The 200 series and the SM4’s.  Hopefully we’re heading back in that direction with the SM9.
