Any success removing and reusing Jumbomax Ultralite grips?

I threw a Jumbomax grip on my 3w but I'd like to remove it and butt trim the shaft 1/2".  I've got access to air as well as solvent and a grip removal tool, just curious before I give it a go if anyone has successfully removed one and what works best.

I've removed them multiple times. Of course I used air to put them on with NO solvent.

 

I would think it all depends on how it was installed. If it was installed with solvent and grip tape then I seriously doubt they will come off with air.

PIA on a set I picked up but they were taped.  Very difficult to get the grip removal tool started in the bottom of the grip and a real chore to get the tool moving down under the grip.

 

Just made a mess of goop and very difficult to get it off so I ended up just cutting the rest off.

Thanks for the replies. I tried to blow it on with air, my usual method, but it actually wouldn't go. Being in a bit of a rush I had to use tape and solvent to get it on the club in the first place.  I might just grip down on the club for a while until I can get another grip just in case it's a cut job. Thanks again.

I have removed mine using solvent. Get syringes used for vaccinating animals as they have a heavier duty needle.

I just removed a set of Jumbo Max large grips using the v groove tool and solvent.  It was the first time I've done this and it was very easy.  Each one took less then 5 minutes and no damage to the grip.

I just took off a full set of Tour medium Jumbomax to install a set of XL non tapered tour that were put on with solvent and tape, using a tire inflator. I saw on You tube some guy did this. It worked for me. I think the reason is that the Tour Jumbomax has an inner core. That way they don’t balloon up. The reason I wanted to do this is because my arthritis in my fingers on my right hand won’t close, and my left are not quite as bad, but getting there. This seem to happen after I took the 2 shots for the vaccine. It’s like my arthritis went into high gear. Now I have a set of Medium Tour and a few new extras that I hadn’t used. Anyone looking for those I’m hoping to help. The wrap Jumbomax had a thin layer on top that didn’t hold up for me. Also I found I needed another golf bag to accommodate these grips. You need to think about that with a set….

Any more people saved any jumbomax grips recently? I have the ZEN Lite XS and want to pull up without cutting. I have a grip saving tool and can’t get the blade between the beginning of the grip and shaft?

I have a piece of PVC pipe (taped up on the outside to minimize chance of it exploding) with an length longer and an ID slightly larger than the grips that I slide over the grip then use a tire inflator to pop them off without stretching

I remove XL ultralights all the time and reuse them.  I can remove them and reuse each grip twice. After that they seem to be too stretched out and won't hold on the shaft any longer, even with grip tape.  I use a loose spiral of 1/2"  grip tape on every grip I do. I don't use a full layer on the shaft, I think that's over kill.

 

I use the grip tool.  It takes a bit of playing around to get it started.  Once it starts they come off easily with solvent as you go.  Helps to find something a tad thinner then the tip of the tool to get into a gap at the start.

I use air and save them all the time. I also install with air and contact cement. Best Grips taught me that method and it works so dang well.

I've removed several that were installed with tape/solvent and with a little nudging they will eventually break loose, but some of the tape is left up the grip.  👈Using air👈.  I install all with air now and a tiny bit of solvent.  Works great!

What PSI? Just a blow gun tip in the back? I can’t get my ZEN lite’s off

Where did you put the tire inflator needle? In the rubber or butt end of the grip?

How did you get the V Groove tool started without damaging the bottom foam piece near the shaft?

Fine something thinner then the tip of the V Groove tool just to get it started then insert the grove tool.  Takes some practice but after that it's pretty easy.

Cheap tire inflator.  In and out with the nozzle, while gently twisting.....will eventually break loose.  Once you install without tape they are very easy to work with as there is a solid inner core.

I’ve saved a few but my success rate is lower with these than most others. Get the industrial needles from Golf Works. They give you a much better chance and last much longer.

How do you do this, just a few spots of contact cement on a bare Shaft? Just about to install some on some cobra hybrids and it looks like those grips had no tape only some glue

I just put the brush in the hole of the grip that goes on the shaft. I wipe off the excess with a bit of mineral spirits on a paper towel. The grips don’t move and I can reuse them. I do use a layer of single sided tape on the shaft.

Hey I know this is a bit of an old post, but I've been trying to use my jumbomax with air.  When I tried this last year I gave up because they all twisted on me, but anytime I need to make a modification to the clubs it costs a lot to replace.

 

I've tried hair spray and two layers on blue tape, still twists.  I'm out of ideas but saw you use contact cement.  Does that really keep it from twisting?  You're able to still pop off the grip with air afterwards also?

No twist, ever. Harder to get off for sure, but you can still get the grip off with air.

What brand contact cement do you use?  I just picked up some athletic tape because I've also read that this works, but if that doesn't contact cement is my last resort

Last question.  When you put the contact cement in the grip, blow it on, then when you need to take it off, is the cement on the masking tape or stuck hidden inside the grip itself?  Do you put more on when you reinstall it?

Jumbomax ultralite I blow on with air but need some masking tape underneath to keep from twisting. 
 

zenlite I have installed on shaft no masking tape with mixed results. Masking tape helps keep the grip in place but can still blow off to save grip. 
 

Jumbomax with regular grip tape, I have not been able to blow off.

I find that it is stuck more to the tape. It wasn’t an issue to put it back on and reuse the grips after.

So after four rounds I took a look at my irons which I installed the grips on with contact cement.  I had a few that twisted from the top of the grip but the rest stayed centered without any sign of moving.  I'll try adding more contact cement.  Maybe add some on the top of the shaft as well as inside the grip and try again on the ones that are twisting.

I usually dip the brush in two times to make sure I get enough contact cement on the grip. Dip and apply in the hole of the grip and then repeat the process again.
