What clubs did George Knudson play?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what clubs George Knudson played?  I can't seem to find any good info on the internet.  Have been watching some of his play on Shell's Wonderful World of Golf and can't seem to pick anything out either.

I've seen some Spalding "George Knudson" irons. But, did he play actually those?

Also very interested in the woods he played.

Cheers

I caddied for George at a pro-am in 1972.  He was still on tour, but his career was winding down.  Fantastic guy !!

Clubs were all Spalding, with Golf Pride All Cord grips.  Woods were either Elite's or TopFlite's (don't remember perfectly !).  Woods were all persimmon, which was very unique for the later years of Spalding as almost all retail woods were laminated.

Irons were custom Elite, a matching full set including the wedges.  PW and SW; lob and gap wedges came around much later.  The custom irons looked just like the retail models.

Don't remember his putter, but it was some type of blade, maybe a BullsEye.

This is the most detail I've seen on clubs he played.  Thank you Chris!

Don't know about the clubs but watched him play Firestone in the mid 1960's and Mr. Knudson had one of the most efficient swings I ever saw. I think he might have been paired with Gardner Dickinson for a round or two and the sight of two Hogan disciples playing together was about as close as I ever got to see the real thing. Just remember the swing and the super classy conservative attire of the man. What a ball striker!

In the 1980's George played Mizuno GK 19 with precision 8.0 shafts. The heads were weighted very heavy and counter balanced with a lead plug  in the butt to swing weight in the C's, like C8.

Super interesting. Do you also know anything about what his lie angles were like? Thanks!

Awwwwww Mr. Knudson.

I have been studying this man's swing ever since I purchased his VHS "The Swing Motion" and his book "The Natural Golf Swing" in the 80s. I even got him to autograph his book for me whilst he was teaching at the Buttonville Fairways Driving range north of Toronto.

As far as equipment does, he played the following from what I remember:

- Spalding Elite Custom irons/ Bullseye putter/Cash in

- Titleist blades (similar to Tour models)

-Mizuno Blades with Mizuno Persimmons ( I have a photo of his actual clubs, somewhere)

- Accuform PTM (Precision Tour Model) with Accuform persimmon woods (Picture of his actual drivers)

Mr. Knudson played the tour in the 1960s-late 1970s and then became a teaching pro at many golf courses in and around Toronto. He was gearing up to play the PGA Champions tour but unfortunately passed away before he was able to compete.

He was associated with the National Golf Club in Woodbridge and partnered with the late Ben Kern and played Accuform golf clubs whilst at the National. I have one of his Accuform PTM 1 irons with Precision Rifle shaft (8.0) and needless to say it is a knife. Pictures to follow. The woods are rare and absolute gorgeous.

I keep trying to swing more like Mr. Knudson but I have a long ways to go.

Wonderful to see your collection.  My biggest thrift-shop regret was passing on a set of Accuform blades.  I didn't know about the PTM at the time and I keep wondering what could have been.

I just noticed that the George Knudson- The Swing Motion video is available on Amaz0n Prime.

Great video -ahead of its time for sure.

Definitely, I've watched it a few too many times this offseason - albeit on YouTube.  He made it look so simple and fluid.

There is a channel called Trevor Bradley Golf with some high quality George Knudson content.

Bit of a bump here but I'd love to see the photos. Big fan of the Accuform stuff!

Hi, I was caddying in the CPGA in Winnipeg in 1976. I was hitchhiking to the club and George gave me a ride. When we got to the course he asked me to watch his clubs.  I can't remember the brand but it probably didn't matter. He balanced them with lead or solder, so they where all different. Looked like a home job. I have never seen anything like it before or since.

I got to know George well. The above information is close.  He got his clubs in at D6 and back weighted (15 grams) to bring back to D3. This allowed him to let club "flow as it may". As stated above, X shafts

A friend of mine caddied for George on the Tour for a year or two.  He loved Rothman King Size cigarettes and scotch. 😃

I was there as a very interested spectator. Moe was in the hunt.  George was classy in his shades.   Who did you caddy for?
