Screw in the toe of modern Ping irons

sui generis

Recommended Posts

According to Ping, the i59's have hosel weights.

On my 425's the plastic cover came off one of the weights, reveling a small hole or dimple on the top.  I'm wondering if a screw can be run into that hole in the weight and used to pull it out?  I may try that later today.

I'll figure out thread size and pitch in the next day or so, but I'm not game for drilling on the heads.  I'm a club ho and will likely only keep the clubs for a season or two.

I don't mean drilling the heads. What I'm referring to is kinda like the Maltby screw-within-a-screw concept that they used on the early KE4 woods and hybrids. You mentioned that the toe screws are hollow. If you could insert a tungsten weight into the cavity in the toe screws themselves, that would be an ideal solution for adding weight to the heads. If there is actually space within the heads beyond the threaded hole where the toe screws go, you could also use something less dense like brass that could extend out of the toe screw a bit if necessary. I've used this method before on Titleist 910 fairway woods and Wilson Staff hybrids. I just epoxied a weight within the cavity of the OEM weight screws to get me to my target swingweight. Granted, those weights were bigger in diameter than the PING toe screws, but you could probably still do something similar.

I'm kind'a screwed on my 425 rebuild; swingweight is too low on most clubs in the set.  And when I say too low, I'm talking about some in the C8 range.  Moving from DG105 to Recoil 95 shafts.  Tip weights are the obvious answer, but that's easier said than done with graphite shafts.   Man, some aftermarket tungsten weights would make things so much easier.

To me, the obvious answer is lead tape.  🙂

Some of the screws are hollow, and others aren't.  Depends on weight.  I've crammed lead into the hollow portion to increase weight, and it works.  But I don't have the right combination of screws.  It might be worth while to hollow out some of the solid ones, and then stuff them.  On the other hand...

By stuffing lead in the hollow weights and using small tip weights on select clubs I've managed to get swingweight up to D0/D2 wedges, the stock level.  That's going to have to do for now...until the aftermarket gets going and makes some toe screws.  I figure it's just a matter of time (hopefully.)

The Recoil shafts I'm using have been recycled so many times I've lost count.  With each rebuild the tip gets a little smaller, during epoxy removal, so I tipped all the shafts 1/2" for a fresh start.  I've also soft stepped 2X, to get the length needed.  Good fun.🤐

Have just removed the toe weights in my g425 irons and used a heat gun over the weight for 10 seconds and came out easily. Could see some blueish glue round the thread. Beforehand, without heat I shredded a couple of wrenches trying to get them out. The stock weight in the 7iron is 10g.

Managed to find a UK seller on eBay selling replacements and to be fair, they look identical to the originals and fitted in nicely if anyone is interested.

couple other options (if anyone is still interested) are tungsten stick on weights (similar to lead weighting just better if you want heavier option from less material) available at golfworks ( i have use them and they are great)…also a couple websites that sell after market club head weights such as billybobs golf and shaft connect (again have used from both and no complaints…i just really like a heavy feeling club 🥴…cheers

i wish I could meet the people that came up with the current Ping hosel size and weight port and beat them with a bag of CTP weights.😬

I was interested in the i230 irons until I discovered Ping is using this method on most of their irons; life is too short. I think I will be moving on to something forged or something less obtrusive.

Bumping an old thread....Is there any reason not to add weight to these with tungsten weight down the shaft with cork?

Two reasons why I have never like doing this:

- when you do that, you are never really sure if you got the weight down as far as you want,

- and the further up the shaft you add weight, the more weight you need to get to a certain swing weight.

Not sure if this will help but I have a set of i525 I bought used by the time I got all the irons the static weight is all over the place. I used new toe screws purchased from eBay and opti vibe shaft weights from tour lock I like I can jam the shaft weight down far so not sure on swing weight but care more about static weight and have a 4 gram drop across the set

Just a word of warning to everyone. I have owned g410 and g425 irons and each time I pulled the toe weight with a driver wrench with minimal effort. Recently received a set of g430s and decided to see what the toe weight was. Took the wrench to the weight and stripped the screw by hand like it was made of plastic. I have never seen anything like it. There is no way I should be able to do that. Aluminum should not strip as easily as this screw did. Unreal.

If you drill out the inside of the shaft tip with a long drill bit you can see how far down the hosel the tip will go.  Keep that measurement when putting in a cork and set it and then check the dimension.

Most guys aren't that smart or have a long drill bit, but that is the correct thing to do.

Just got a set of i230's with LA Golf "A" series 105 graphite shafts via CC which all have D0 swing weight. I took all of the toe screws out and weighed them and they range anywhere from 3g in Pitching Wedge to 8g in 6 iron. I am wanting to bring the swing weight of each iron to D2 by exchanging the screws with ones which are 4g's heavier. I would rather not pull the shafts and mess with Ping's hosel weights, etc. Will there be any negative side effects in feel should I do this?

None. What you are doing is just fine.  That will not make a perceptible difference at all.

I agree.  You can't get the hosel weights out anyway.  The only thing you could do is add tip weights, and tip weights in graphite suck.

If the hosel weight is under 7gYou can get the hosel weights out with a black oxide bit on speed 4 of drill.  5 seconds drill/cool tip in water repeat until it’s gone.  I did some i230’s with 5g tungsten weights in them.  The bit I have shredded the weight right out whereas other bits wouldn’t scratch them.
The bonus of getting the hosel weight out was I restored bore depth which I wanted.

So a black oxide bit can drill out Tungsten hosel weights? Do you have a drill bit recommendation? Thx
