Peter Jacobson is totally out of touch with reality

I think Pebble Beach is one of the half-dozen most iconic golfing locations on Earth.

Given the chance to play a six hour round with a bunch of mid-teen handicappers hamming it up for the cameras, I'd rather undertake a trip to the dentist for a root canal on a dodgy molar.

Well we can at least agree on the 1st part! 🍻 haha

For me, I rarely watch most golf tournaments (even a few majors) on TV because it's just plain boring except these..

1. The Masters (for the tradition and the beauty of the legendary course)

2 The US Open (so I can see the best players in the world struggle)

3 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am (so I can see celebrities struggle and Bill Murray make a fool of himself)

Got me thinking. If I’m out there playing golf at one of those 3 courses on a 60 something degree day, almost no wind, and my focus is on how awful it is due to longer than avg rounds with mid caps… It would definitely be time for me to do some introspection.

But it's these guys JOBS to play golf ... and they play on the world's best courses every day ... and they're trying to earn a paycheck. It's not like this is a once in a lifetime chance to play Pebble in a Saturday corporate outing for them.

Fair enough. I was mainly speaking for myself in regard to what mat said above. I don’t think he’s a pro and he said he’d rather have a root canal! 😂

Just realized I read a thread that had "Bill Murray" and "top people in entertainment" in the same post in a non-sarcastic manner. Go figure.

Sorry dude, didn't realize Mr. Murray's agent was on GolfWRX ...

Pretty sure even Mr. Murray would admit he's not quite on the A-List in Hollywood anymore (and I'm not saying that's a bad thing).

BTW, if us "randos" stop ridiculing things, this whole internet thing is going to dry up pretty quickly.

We live in a day and age where basically anyone can be "famous".  The excitement celebrities once brought is about dead IMO.  Fine if they want to play golf... do that.  Maybe I'm old but I don't care to see any of these people doing anything other than playing golf, especially on this course and I don't blame ANY big name for wanting to skip this one, which is probably not an easy choice.  I dont believe most people care about celebrities much anymore.  They once had a reputation for being important but most of them have ruined that reputation for the others and themselves.  Maybe a "golfing with the stars" tour is needed, where people can watch the winner shoot +32 for the win.  Get off my lawn.

Did anyone here see Bill’s on course interview with Amanda last week? She asked him what kept him coming back year after year. Paraphrasing here: He was very serious and talked about the energy at the event. ‘Everyone here loves golf, everyone here loves and appreciates the location and beauty of the surroundings, there is just a lot of love and positive energy’. I could relate with what he was saying. In my life when I’ve been in a positive environment with a lot of happy and positive people it’s palpable. Unfortunately quite rare these days.

Jacobson was making the point that this was the place to network with people in business with the tour and entertainment.  Now I will say he is out of touch, because these players have high level agents, PR reps and social media consultants, so they don’t need to network like the old days.

I don't believe most entertainment businesses and certainly not many corporations have the respect of the people now as they once did. Many don't follow the stars anymore nor care about them and are tired of them running their mouths. I could only watch the last day of the tournament but tried a couple of times on the previous days, just no interest. The last days was a good watch and exciting finale.

He just doesn't get it.  Lots of fans and top players just don't like the Bill Murray clown show.

His comment: “This is the most important tournament on the PGA Tour and I think some of the players are a bit short-sighted when they don’t understand that.”

and this: "But I think this is the one tournament that is extremely important to the success of the PGA Tour and it’s disheartening for me to see so many miss this tournament, so many of the stars, because I think the best players on the PGA Tour should be here and playing with the top people in business, the top people in entertainment and sports. It’s disheartening for me just to see this and I would have loved to have seen the best players in the world playing here this week.”

Saudi International: Peter Jacobsen slams players not at Pebble Beach (usatoday.com)

I think that he is echoing the opinions of the PGA Tour that the AT&T is an important tournament as well. The PGA Tour even went as far as to make requirements for the players that play in the Saudi Tournament to commit to play in the AT&T within a certain timeframe (I forgot the exact details).

My guess the reason is because all the major big corporate sponsor executives are playing at the AT&T more than any other PGA tournament. The big name PGA pros are a big draw for those big wig corporate executives. If the big name PGA pros are not there, then those big corporate executives may be less likely to want to play there. Lots of business deals and business relationships go down at the AT&T.
