Rehashing something Jake said Friday or Saturday, reported Sunday during the tournament, several days later seems to suggest just another of the endless "so and so commentator" annoys me rants.

Noted.

Jake's okay, gets a free pass forever after tackling the streaker.

The entire pro-am portion of the event is, if not totally obsolete, at least far different from what it once was. It used to be made up largely of entertainment celebs in the old days, movie stars, TV people, sports figures, singers and the like, most of whom had a high public profile. Eventually some corporate types entered the picture as the money ante to enter went up. Now, though, Hollywood is largely irrelevant, being a movie star isn't what it once was except perhaps for the money, and few people admire them or even know who they are compared to the glory days. In an era where someone posting absolutely mindless dumb videos on YouTube or self-important pictures on Insta or TikTok can rake in millions, who is going to care or even know who they are, and so why would they play in a pro-am?

The charity part is good and cannot be overlooked, but I do think the televised pro-am piece needs a rethink.

And even thought this whole thread is a beating last week's dead horse thing, I did watch most of Sunday's coverage and there was very, very little shown of any amateur shots and very, very little actual discussion - it was focused on the shots of the guys in contention, and it was like watching just about any other Sunday broadcast, so no real complaint here at all IMO.  Yeah, a quickie interview with Murray, so what, and a couple others, but for the most part, almost nothing about the ams.

Seems like a lot of complaining from folks that didn't even watch or didn't pay attention if they did.

The PGATOUR will continue to have that Pro-Am until it doesn't make dollars and cents.

Nobody generates revenue like the Tour. While there's some that's not entertained, there's millions that are. I see nothing wrong with the event with the exception of not having enough young people participating in the event.

Pgatour need to replenish their fan base.....IMO

Can it be said, and perhaps to an extent agreed upon, that PB is an iconic golfing location but not a great golf course?

It was a great golf course with the club and ball technology available in the 1960's through 1980's.  Just ask Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, to name a couple of players.  Arnie would concur.

I remember when 9 and 10 were very long holes.  Now they play them with driver, wedge.  Bogus.

Lots of fans and top players just don't like the Bill Murray clown show.

Lots "yes", but lots does NOT supersede all the people that grew up with Murray and like his antics.  What's out of touch, people like you that think your likes and dislikes have some bearing on who entertains and pays the hefty $$$$ freight in Pro-Ams.

If you and others don't like Bill Murray or PJ, fine.  A small reminder, your population segment isn't even big enough or wealthy enough to be the dominate force supporting golf.  Maybe some day, but not now.  Bill Murray and others show up to walk the course and most of the people in the gallery's and TV viewers enjoy him.  Oh, many of the CEO's that pay the $$$$ fright are single digit or close, just not shown much on TV cause they know to get out of the way of the tour player.  That event exists still for Crosby's legacy and charity.

I think Pebble Beach is one of the half-dozen most iconic golfing locations on Earth.

Given the chance to play a six hour round with a bunch of mid-teen handicappers hamming it up for the cameras, I'd rather undertake a trip to the dentist for a root canal on a dodgy molar.

Agreed, I can’t even bring myself to watch it. It’s one of if not the worst event on TV all year IMO.

I had always heard that the non-oceanside holes weren't much to write home about, which then brought up the question, are the oceanside holes only good due to the ocean?

I personally love 18 and 7.  18 would be a well configured hole without the ocean.  7 is great because of the location, took some cajones to put it there in the first place.

My guess the reason is because all the major big corporate sponsor executives are playing at the AT&T more than any other PGA tournament. The big name PGA pros are a big draw for those big wig corporate executives. If the big name PGA pros are not there, then those big corporate executives may be less likely to want to play there. Lots of business deals and business relationships go down at the AT&T.

The AT&T is no more important than a 20 - 30 other tournaments.  And if the "big corporate executives" stop playing I doubt that anybody would notice.

I also watch on Sunday and the reason you didn't see much of the clown show is that most of them were not there.  I think only the 20 that made the cut were playing on Sunday.

Jacobsen is going to be biased towards the ATT pro am. He made his pro debut here, won, and played his last pro event last week.

It is true that it’s no longer a premier event that every pro wants to play in. The main issue is that most of the ams aren’t even known by the players and fans. The ams playing in the past few years haven’t been relevant for most of my lifetime (looking at you Bill Murray) or most people watching have never heard of them.

Yes, movie stars just don’t carry the same cache.

Although I remember wayyyy back a bunch of us went to the Letterman Show and George Clooney was on when he was a big deal and when he came out on stage

The entire female audience let out a collective <gasp>

I was like, whatever 🤣

Movie Stars used to be something…

Perhaps you know that lady." Gatsby indicated a gorgeous, scarcely human orchid of a woman who sat in state under a white-plum tree. Tom and Daisy stared, with that peculiarly unreal feeling that accompanies the recognition of a hitherto ghostly celebrity of the movies.

Jacobson was making the point that this was the place to network with people in business with the tour and entertainment.  Now I will say he is out of touch, because these players have high level agents, PR reps and social media consultants, so they don’t need to network like the old days.

Agree with the above. Jacobsen has a point.

Of course, Jacobsen has a point. If anyone don't understand the significance of mingling with the moneymen, then let them remain in the dark......

IMO....The only thing the tour is negligent in is their lack of focus on how many current young athletes play golf.....

The event really needs some Kardashians.  At least they don't drag poor old Phil Harris out to ramble on about a putt he made sometime in the '50s.  It was amusing for all the years Jake tried to get him and Jack Lemmon into the weekend.

The famous Phil Harris quote, "he made a woman out of that golf ball."  A balata era reference.
