Steelfiber, which one to switch to

Quick question. I’ve read a lot hear but still not sure. I’m thinking of making the move to graphite and I think I’m leaning the steelfiber direction.

Im coming from Project X LZ 5.5. I think I have a moderate transition and SS is low 100. The LZ’s perform pretty well for me, but as I near 60 I want something a little easier on the joints (unfortunately the range where I play is on mats quote frequently).

I read that Steelfiber recommends not dropping too much in weight. I believe the LZ’s are 118. Is going to the i95 too much change?

Any help or opinions is appreciated.

I am coming back to golf after a long hiatus.  I played S300s in my MX23s and ended up with the SteelFiber i110s (r-flex) in my Sim2 Max irons and have been happy.  It's still an adjustment process as I haven't gotten a chance to play or practice as much as I'd like, but I do like them so far.

I don't know anything about the Project X shafts you're in, so I can't help point you to a specific weight.

Driver:  Ping 425Max (Aldila Synergy)

3W&5W:  Mizuno ST-Z (Aldila Synergy)

7W Taylor Made Stealth (Aldila Ascent)

4H:  Taylor Made Sim2 Max (Accra FX)

5-GW:  Taylor Made Sim2 Max (SteelFiber i110)

52* Edel SMS C-Grind (Paderson Wedge Flex)

56*W Cleveland CBX (SteelFiber i110CW)

Whether its' too much of a drop of not is something you can only find out by testing.  Everyone is going to be different.  Some will have no problems, some might have lots of problems.  And that's assuming the swing weight is managed properly as well.

But the i-series steelfibers have a stiffer profile and feel than the LZ's.   I would think the UST Recoils would be a closer match than the SF's.

Thanks Stuart. I know even less about the recoils, have to do some research.

The SF’s I’m looking at are R flex. I don’t know if that changes how they compare with the LZ’s.

Not if you're comparing R flex SF's to R flex LZ's.   If you're comparing R flex SF's to Stiff flex LZ's it might.    Not 100% but it might limit what weights are available.  R flex above 100 gm's aren't that common.   Many shaft companies don't bother making them since the demand is so low.

Recently I’ve become very interested in researching a set of graphite shafts to switch to that play similar to my LZ 6.0s.  I’ve been fit into the LZs twice now so I want to stick with something similar.  Long story short I haven’t really found anything comparable in just reading and searching for recommendations.  I’m getting ready to schedule a fitting and just start trying stuff until I find something that works.

I am in the same boat.  Let me know what you find in your fitting.  At a recent fitting I got along with Steelfibers i95s and i110 as well.  Was being for Titleist t100s and the Tensei blue and white were nice as well.  My fitter didn’t have any MMT or Accras to try.

I can only speak from recent experiences, and Stuart helped me a bunch on shaft choice.

I can say that Steelfiber i95 Regular plays stiffer than both Nippon Pro Modus Tour 105 Stiff and Recoil 110 in F4 flex.  The Steelfibers also launch a bit lower and have better stability through impact.  I really like them in my P790's.  Over the last five years I've progressed from DG 115's, to Recoil 110's, to the Pro Modus Tour 105's, and now in the i95's and have not had a terrible time adapting to the lighter weight - but it did take some time on the range every time I switched.

If you are already in a regular flex shaft from another manufacturer and enjoying it, the Steelfiber i95 Regular has real potential to feel too stiff.  Highly recommend you find a way to test them before jumping in.

I currently have project X LZ 5.5 in my HMPs. I have tried a lot of graphite shafts to help with joint pain. I wanted to love the recoil 95s. Extremely lively with great ballspeed but the consistency wasn't there for me.

As a last attempt I gave the steelfiber FC115 a shot and they have been exceptional. Not boardy like normal SF and the 115 weight was an easy transition from the LZ. They are a grossly underated shaft.

Let me tell you what Wooderson is packin'

Went from Recoil 95s F4 (stiff) I’ve played and liked for several years to MMT 105 soft stepped once. Like the little bit more weight, the feel is a little less stiff than the Recoils and really smooth. I tried it because I’ve got steel Pro Modus 105 in stiff soft stepped with my wedges and really like those. Graphite for the wedges is next.

Just to complicate things!

I have a set of irons with LZ 5.5 and another with FC90. Got the FC90s due to using range mats over winter taking its toll on my elbows.  Quite often I will take irons from both sets to the range and move between them without much in the way of adjustment. I also have a 4 iron utility iron with a recoil 110 F4 shaft which works well with both sets.  In general and for full shots the FC90 works well and the switch from LZ 5.5 is not a problem, it’s on half swings, knock down shots etc where I lose feel with the lighter shaft.  I did consider moving to a set of T100 with Recoil 110 F4 but unfortunately Titleist are not offering that configuration in the UK.

I would have liked to try the FC115 but it’s a rare animal in the UK. Although PXG are offering it and I’m tempted to get a single long iron to try.

That last paragraph I found to be absolutely true for me. I have a set of i95 R in a set of TM TP CBs. I found they played stiffer in the tips to my feel compared to a R-300 and overall they felt stiffer. Now a lot of it depends on who built the clubs to begin with and how they tipped them out. I did not build those so I have no idea

Driver--- Callaway Big Bertha Alpha--- Speeder 565 R flex

7W --- TM V Steel UST Pro Force 65 R flex

Irons 5 thru 9 1985 Macgregor VIP Hogan Apex #2 shafts

PW-- 1962 Macgregor FC-400 11 iron Pro Pel 2 shaft

SW -- Callaway Mac Daddy 52*

LW Vokey SM5 L Grind 58* 04 bounce Stock Vokey Shaft

Putter -- Ping Zing 2 SS Fluted Bulls Eye shaft

Down to only 11 clubs playing the best since my accident

It’s tough. What got me on these was I had a set several years back. I honestly don’t even know the specs of what was in them. A friend asked me to sell them for him on eBay. I took them out and tried them, liked them, and bought them from him. Down the road, being a equipment junkie, I sold them.

I just remember liking how they worked for me. I know that’s a pretty poor baseline to base my search on. 😀 Unfortunately, I’m just not real well versed on the technical side of things. I just grab something and go hit it.

Well, I’m taking a left turn here. I found an old set of King Cobra irons (mid 90’s maybe?) with graphite shafts. I played a set for a while back then, but the lofts must have been really strong and the distances were crazy. PW flew like 155.  Now 30 years later, they might fit just fine!

I just  remember them being really easy to swing.  And for $70, I figured what the heck.
