Wow, it didn't just burn, it BURNED!  Hate to see that much golf history go away.

Really sad to see. Alot of golf history up in flames. Amazing course and Iconic venue. Course recently did alot of renovations and is expected to host some future big events.

Hate to see an iconic place such as this end up in ashes. But at least no one has reportedly been injured and as was mentioned in the other thread, it's Oakland Hills, and they will recover.

Really sad to see. That was a catastrophic fire. I wonder how many historic clubhouses out there are equally exposed to risks like this, with building code exemptions and whatnot.

They did.  The early investigation into the cause suggests the bulk of the initial fire was in the walls and between floors.  The fire had spread dramatically and the sprinklers were of little use once engaged as they didn't reach the core of the flame.

Early reports also stated that the fire began in the attic and spread rapidly up there. You don't find many attics with sprinklers.

If the building was sprinklered throughout per nfpa 13 the attic would have them unless some exceptions were applied. Since everything was combustible that is unlikely. Too late for this historic structure but sprinkler retrofits are tricky.

They did have a fire suppression system that they said wasn’t’t effective enough.
