Old school Golf Pride Tour Wrap grips - any equivalents?

Back in the 1990s when I first took up golf I had all my clubs gripped with Golf Pride Tour Wrap rubber grips. They felt great in my hands soft and smooth yet tacky at the same time. Today's Tour Wraps feel plasticky, which I don't care for. Are there any grips out there which are just like the Tour Wraps of old?

I think some of the grips from Star come close. Not their Sidewinder grip but perhaps Tour Star, Smoothee, or Channel Wrap.

Would love to hear some more feedback on the Royal Grip Perf Wraps.  How is the durability?  Also, any comparison’s to any current wraps on the market?  How is the size and taper?

 

I’m giving the tour wrap 2g a go right now.  But these have me very intrigued.

Royal Grip wrap feels the closest to the 1980s Golf Pride wrap 2 me.

Pure wrap feels similar with a little more cushion. I'm sort of in the same boat as you and have been buying all the wraps I could try out.

 

As an aside, the white Golf Pride wrap feels better than the other colors. I thought I was nuts but another member here said something similar. And the neighbor boy put white Golf Pride wrap grips on his clubs after experiencing the same good feel. ( I have the white ones on my wedges) Go figure......

Thanks!  I have the white 2g on my irons.  Thinking about putting the royal perf wraps on my wedges to see how they get on.

Thanks for the feedback/opinions.  I will likely try these at one point.  Pure wraps were too slick for me.

agree 10000% about the white 2G it does not get as gritty feeling as the other colors and just seems to feel better, the white is the best wrap I have played

Could it be that the 2G just LOOKS plasticky, which might be clouding your judgment?

No, it's definitely a different feel than the original Golf Pride tour wrap

I also use the Royal Grips Perf Wraps and they are great. There is a classic taper to them. I had them on my previous set for a full year before upgrading irons and they were still like new. The gold accents and repeating circular perforation pattern makes them really classy looking too.

Interesting to hear that the white Tour Wraps feel different than the red or black.  I noticed the other day that they are a few grams heavier too.

They are also heavier than the other versions. Perhaps the rubber composition is different as I doubt dye alone would add so much weight.

Time for an update. I decided to go ahead and order one Royal Perf Wrap grip from GolfWorks. I got it in the mail today and I regripped my MacGregor persimmon driver with it, since its original Victory Cord grip was beginning to fall apart. I must admit that this grip feels almost exactly like the old GP Tour Wraps, and once broken in it will feel exactly like a Tour Wrap grip. It's a little bit shorter and more tapered than a Tour Wrap, but not by much, so I'll get used to it.

 

The only small complaint I have is the price. $3.99 is good, but when you factor in shipping and tax it comes to over $12.00. The grips in a golf store are less expensive than this. I think the best way to get around this is to buy the grips in a large enough quantity to make the shipping costs worthwhile, like when regripping a full set of clubs.

 

That's it, my search is over. It's Royal Grips from now on!
