Newer Gap Wedges in the style of Ping Eye 2 PW?

Binson

Recommended Posts

I'm an odd one when it comes to pitching/chipping and use a 50 degree for most shots from 100 and in.  My favourite is an old Ping Eye 2 BeCu PW (which is about 50 degrees of loft).

I keep trying other gap wedges and they're fine for me on full-shots but I ultimately end up coming back to this one for partial shots and touch-shots.  For clarity, I mean specifically the Eye 2 PW (with the wider looking sole pictured below), and not the Eye 2+ PW, which is a little stronger lofted and has a thinner looking sole.

There are many modern versions of the SW and LW but I'm coming up empty when looking for a GW in a similar style.

I'm guessing there aren't many others like me out there, but does anyone have "modern" alternatives to suggest?

Cheers

I think some of the high toe/deep face wedges are what’s going to be closer in size to the Ping.  Cleveland is a great start.  I haven’t compared my CBX to my Eye 2 wedge in the basement, but from memory I think they’re close, with the CBX slightly bigger.

You could always get a Glide 3.0 Eye2 54* and bend it strong.

CBX Zipcore. Wide sole, high numerical bounce, moderate effective bounce.

Good suggestion. Although I'm wondering if the PW-GW have the same look/shape as the SW/LW options.  There aren't a lot of different angles available from a picture perspective, will check it out in-store if I can.  Thanks!

I did think about it, but I wonder if moving it 3-4 degrees strong is even possible.  If it is possible, it'll probably change the ground interaction a bit too much.

They’re all pretty wide V sole configuration. Heel and toe relief seem to be what changes to some extent.

Ping can bend for lie up to 5* and loft 2-3*. Making the 54* a gap wedge at 52* would reduce bounce by 2* so it would have around 8* of bounce.

Looking like CBX is the closest thing out there if I'm looking for a 50 degree.  I would just love a PM Grind or Eye Sole 50 degree.  But, I guess a market of one is not enough to warrant it.

You could get a TM Hi Toe 50*. That should be pretty similar in performance.

@Binson I believe @NRJyzr has the right question, I don't know how many clubs of the kind you want are around but if the 50º eye2 is what you like for sure, what you're good with etc that's absolutely where to start.

I think this has to be the answer because... the time it will take to try all the other similar and dissimilar permutations could be significant. There could be a variety of reasons why you like the eye2 so much. What if it's the shaft or the light swing weight? etc etc.

Could take awhile to find what else you like.

In the meantime get some suitable back-ups to old trusty if you can I'd say.

I was wondering if they made a GW/50-52* loft in that model..apparently not!

This would be the ideal.  But, no dice.  My actual favorite wedge is my Glide ES 60. It has the scooped sole, narrow hosel, very rounded leading edge, and heel-toe relief.  I just find it super versatile and easy to use for my skill level.  I only wish I could have this wedge as well in 50 degree.

The Indi, Hi-Toe, CBX, and Nike are all interesting options that are within the ballpark.

A fair question and I have a few stainless ones I swap in and out of from my BeCu one.  The Eye 2 PW will likely remain my 50 degree wedge of choice until the grooves wear out.  Given they've lasted this long, they could very well outlast me.  The BeCu PW though is a bit more difficult to come by in decent condition and not getting any easier to find.

I tried to switch to a Vokey F Grind this off-season and it just didn't quite fit my particular technique.  Totally possible it's just that particular wedge that doesn't quite work well with this technique.

I'm not playing in any high level competitions (nor will I be) but once in a while, a playing partner will say I'm cheating when I hit a good shot (somewhat tongue in cheek).  I'm just tired of having to explain the details.  And when I did change to a different wedge for a few rounds, the results were poor so they felt validated.

It's just hilarious to me that a wedge with old worn grooves from the 80's is still "illegal" and controversial.  Meanwhile, all these new spin enhancing and spin controlling technologies like Hydropearl, Zipcore, MicroMax, Jaws, etc. are just fine and dandy. That said, I often play in the morning and wonder if there may be any benefit in consistency with hydrophobicity in newer wedges.

I've found I'm not all too sensitive when it comes to the weight of my wedges once I get a few practice shots in.  I can hone in decent enough.  Light swing weight and offset could be a part of it though, since I employ a bit more of a trail hand tossing motion for touch shots.

Finally, as for why I like this shape in particular, I love the somewhat scalloped sole with heel relief, rounded leading edge, high toe, and a thin hosel.  I tend to play in dewey, soft morning conditions and it gives me confidence when I'm standing over the ball that I can throw the back of the club into the ground when I need to.

I would still be bagging BeCu Eye 2+ SW & BeCu Eye 2 SW - if they were legal still. Yes I play tournaments- infuriating doesn't do my intentions with the USGA on this
