Ordering Shorter Than Stock Callaway SW Issue?

Recommended Posts

Getting ready to pull the trigger on a Rogue Max ST. I just don't get along with drivers longer than 45". The St is 45.75" with a sw of D3. If I order it at 45" will Callaway adjust sw (to D3) for the shorter playing length with I assume a heavier backweight?

I've had issues with TM before just butt trimming and sending a driver out at a ridiculously low sw. Ping has always done it right with irons or drivers but I have no experience with Callaway.

 Ping 10.5* G430 Max

TaylorMade 16.5 Stealth HL

TaylorMade 21* Stealth 7 Wood

TaylorMade Stealth 2 5H & 6H

Callaway Apex 21 DCB 6 thru Aw
Vokey SM9 54*/10* S Grind
Vokey SM9 58*/12* K Grind
T.P Mills Custom PN MIng
Odyssey 37"  Red O Works Tank #7

It was a while ago (BB Alpha 816 Alpha) but I ordered a 3wd 1/2" short from Callaway and they adjusted it some with a tip weight - not a different weight size in either of the movable head weights.

Obviously doesn't mean they are still doing that.  Policies do change frequently.

Even if they do adjust (many don't), no company is going to guarantee full recovery of all the SW lost for shorter builds.  The factories are not the same as a tour van and are a lot more limited in what they are able to do.  Plus, there is no general rule to use to tell them what they should do.   So you're always going to be much better off doing your own head weight adjustment for shorter builds - out on the range where you can feel what is happening and see the ball flight results.

Why don't you contact CALLAWAY instead of a msg board with folks who have no control over what happens at Callaway?

Personally, I agree it's worth a shot but it's a far cry from being a reliable source.   The quality of the answers one gets from customer service is only as good as the training the cs reps get.  In an organization that big, they are quite a ways removed from what actually happens on the factory floor.

Point taken. I'm just continually baffled by the questions ppl post here without even attempting to go to the source for answers. More often than not, our answers are really just opinions and best guesses.

Lets take this thread as an example. So OP orders .75" short because he read your post and is crossing fingers that Callaway adds tip weight.  Weeks later the club indeed arrives at C8 instead of D2/3. Now OP needs to make a call on whether to keep as is and remedy himself, or contact Callaway to return because it is too light.

If OP had contacted Callaway to order and specifically asked whether they adjust swing weights with shorter/longer than stock orders they'd know fairly immediately what their options are.

"Hey, Callaway Cust Service person, if this arrives at a C8 instead of D2/3 can I return this?"

"No? Bummer, I'll pass. "

or

"Oh, you guys adjust sw for free/nominal fee on these types of orders? WOW, Callaway is awesome. Please take my $$$!!!!"

Problem solved with a 5-10min phone call.

If he actually read my full post, he'd know that he'd be better of if it actually did come in light and that his best course of action would be to get a roll of lead tape and go fix it himself instead of depending on Callaway to fix it for him.

Too many people are way too overly focused in on stock swing weight values and ignore the importance of actually putting the effort into getting fit for head weight (whether by themselves or with a fitter).

There are way too many people that say, hey my irons are D3 so I need my driver D3.

I AM NOT A FITTER.  However I worked a bunch with Dana Upshaw when he fit me the two times I visited him.  Take all of that info from him and add it to what I have learned from Howard and Stuart and I have either fit or fixed fits from CC or other places for friends and other golf acquaintances.  The number at this point is roughly 30 or so people.  Out of those 30, there have been two that got their best results from a driver that had the same SW as their irons.  This was using the DIY fit stuff Howard has posted and some other tidbits here and there.

My irons are D6 ish(7 iron) and I did an MoI build at 1/4" increments off of my 7 iron.  My best driver center contact has occurred with a 7 iron at 38" and a Driver at 44".  The driver is about 4 SW points below my 7 iron at D1.5(ish). That is about 2/3 of a SW point per inch of difference, which I think Howard mentioned was a good starting point for a lot of folks.
