Then he went on to flip that script in just a couple years on tour.

Rahm turned pro in 2016 - and has 6 wins in what we'll call 5 years. Tiger had 29 in his first 5 years.

When you're just looking at numbers and records and highlights; it's easy to lose perspective about how completely and utterly dominant Tiger was in his prime. Forgive me PTM for not knowing how old you are - but I'm old enough to have watched all that unfold in real time from '96 on. And there's not one single human being on earth playing golf at the level he was for basically 12 years straight. And it's not even close.

If you're closer to 30 than 20 and haven't been winning like he was; getting even near any of his records simply won't happen.

1999-2000,  17 PGA Tour wins and 4 majors

2005-2006, 14 PGA Tour wins and 4 majors

2007-2008, 11 PGA Tour wins and 2 majors

2001-2002, 10 PGA Tour wins and 3 Majors

4 separate 2-year stretches where TW destroyed Rahm entire 5-year career.

No bust on Rahmbo, these are practically 4 HoF careers…in 2-years each lol

And I’ll bet JR isn’t exactly happy with PPerez right row 🤣

I didn’t say Rahm was the one to do it. I can confidently say he’s not. I was responding to those who said the record will never be broken by anyone and there are simply too many good players for one to dominate.

One day, a player will come on tour who maintains a hot streak like Spieth had a handful of years ago in the majors, except they’ll play that way for a decade straight, like Tiger did. It’s inevitable. Rahm is a fantastic player but time is no longer on his side for 19. He also doesn’t have a particular edge over the field. Yes, he’s good at everything, but there isn’t an aspect of his game that leaps him past the field.

For the record, you can check out my post history. I’m a middle aged pro who knows pretty much everything Tiger. I love the guy and know how phenomenal he is. I’ve watched every moment and feel really lucky that I got to see it.

Yeah, I THOUGHT you were around my age (45 this year) but wasn't sure. And it absolutely was a sight to see.

You have worded it very well and I could not agree more. There will be someone that comes along that will take it to the highest level and challenge the record books again. In my lifetime, golf has had two iconic players that had the will and game that took them to the greatest heights and sustain it over their career.

Growing up, Arnold Palmer was my golf idol and he was instrumental in popularizing the game. But a young guy came on the scene that raised the bar of performance to a level that even Arnold Palmer could not achieve, no matter how much Arnold’s Army wanted it to be. Jack Nicklaus was simply on another level and rewrote the record books.

A few decades later, another iconic phenom came on the scene and stood well above his peers, that of course is Tiger Woods. What separates them from their peers was the determination and desire to be the best and the skills to match. What’s more, they sustained the highest level for decades. There are some very good players today, as there always have been, but none are at that level. But some day another will appear and I hope That I get to see it.

Over under on Jon Rahm? I’d say 3.5 and I’d gladly take the under.

8-10 is silly of Perez to even suggest.

Here’s a bet:

Of the current players on the PGA Tour with less than five majors , how many of them do you think will have 5 (or more) major championships when the 2020s are finished?

I put the over under at maybe 2?

i’d be happy to take the under on that one as well.

Haha.

Only Koepka and McIlroy on 4 and they both could end up with no more.

5 majors for any top player is a difficult task.

Only 19 players in the history of men's golf have won 5 or more majors. Only 11 post-war.

I'll take the under.

I’m reasonably certain he’s saying that he’s driven to win majors, not retire at 35 with a canyon full of money. He’s not saying he expects to win 19, but won’t be satisfied…….. ah ya know what, forget it. This is the internet where everything is taken in the worst way possible. The information super highway was a great idea, unfortunately the destination was utter stupidity and there was no speed limit so we arrived there very quickly.

i felt this response on a very deep level.

it’s still early but i think you win the internet for the day.

Jack and Gary Player should go play this year together. Get drunk and heckle the players.

I suspect it’s a c 10-year thing. APPROX DOB’s: Snead, Nelson, Hogan 1912; Palmer 1930; Player 1937; Nicklaus, Trevino 1940; Watson 1950; Faldo, Norman, Seve, Langer c 1957; Singh 1963;  Mickelson, Els, Goosen 1969; Woods 1975; Johnson D 1984, McIlroy 1989; Spieth, Koepka 1993; Rahm 1994, Morikawa 1997.

1912 was a good year. I’ve omitted Monte as there’s no major. Looks like the peak is between 25 - 35 years of age except for GOATS.

I recently listened to Pat Perez on the subpar pod where he was talking about Rahm and according to him Rahm will keep going till he gets to 19 majors. So I was curious, is it even remotely possible for anyone to get to 19 in the current climate of pro golf? It's tough enough just to win 1, heck ask Sergio, he played in 73 majors before finally winning. What do you guys think

It’s possible but he’s not going to do it

Rahm is under the thumb at too young an age. “ Darling,  could you collect the kids today “.

Ehhh one could argue that marital bliss and family could inspire a player because he could be at peace although that’s not necessarily a requirement but think about it he’s at one so he needs 18 more. He needs to have the career of Mickelson, Faldo, and Trevino just to get to 19. He’s not as good as either of those three who are all timers.

You’re right but looking back over 50 years of watching careers, it seems almost impossible to keep the commitment of earlier years going beyond the mid30’s.

so 2022 to 2029 left that's only 32 more majors. Brooks is the only guy I have confidence in to win 1 more major maybe Collin and Jordan have a chance, Rory can win 4 more or 0 more for the rest of his career.

Love the mindset but its not reality.  You basically have to be another version of Tiger Woods to sniff that record and there ain't gonna be another TW in this lifetime.

18 will fall someday, but not at the hands of the Rahminator.

That player will eventually come along.

Now if Woods would've gotten to 25 or so, then I'd have my doubts, but this record isn't one of those in sports that's completely unfathomable, like pitcher wins in baseball and some others.

We've heard the deep field argument since at least the 1980s.  The guy that gets to 19 is unaffected by a 15 tourney winner with a few majors, even if there's 20 of those guys playing, which there never is.

I’d rather play a field with 20 15 time winners than 40 7-8 time winners.  Or 60 5 time winners.  Which is what we’re getting to today.  It’s getting tougher and tougher to win often than it ever has been.

griffey was on track to absolutely demolish the HR record and was picking up gold gloves as fast as they could give them out before injuries got him

bo is probably the greatest raw athlete of all time, but he never rushed for over 1,000 yards in the nfl and was a .250 hitter who only made one all stat team in the mlb.

Never playing more than 10 games in an NFL season is a big part of that.

Not going to happen in anyone's lifetime reading this.

Once a golfer of today's era wins a major or two, they've made millions on the course and multiple millions off the course.   No one has currently shown the ability, drive and determination to accomplish such a feat.  Rory was the last one that had a chance and he flamed miserably.

I agree that this is likely. It seems that there is more hunger and determination when getting established as one of the young phenoms. I think it is more difficult to continue that determination once you have millions.
