NBC's coverage is godawful

they gotta get rid of Hicks, Maltbie and Koch. These three are absolutely awful and cringe to listen to on a broadcast

Gary  Koch is  the worst and not sure  how he still has a  job. The stupid sounds he makes as a shot is coming to rest or when a bad  break happens, its unbearable

You don't consider Koch better than most?

Not unique. Auto racing also does not take timeouts and TV coverage often uses to side by side technique to accommodate commercials. It does not work there either.

We're getting hung up here on semantics.

Unlike the majority of major televised sports, Golf doesn't take TV Timeouts.

The alternative, is they cut out completely, which also doesn't work.  The simple fact is they're never going to not show commercials. They pay billions for the rights to televise these sports, and ad revenue is how they make money.

ESPN+ coverage now lets us switch between so many different group coverages. i can see in the near future being able to choose from a list the commentary. Imagine having any joe schmoe be able to watch a broadcast and provide commentary. those good enough will gain followers similar to podcasts, only it would be live. fingers crossed we get there one day

NBC needs a complete face lift from these wash ups , some that were awful to begin with ( Hicks, dumb Zinger,). Feherty is bored just collecting a pay check. The others too old. Koch sounds awful. Like he needs to be in assisted living. And then dumb Zinger lol ... he must have some pictures or is willing because how he is allowed to broadcast golf is beyond imagination.

I agree, and it would also be easier on Maltbie if he got to be in a booth(unless he was this weekend, but I think he is still on course).  But there is the attitude that only a major champion can sit in that chair, so....

He can't smoke in the booth.

Don't forget Keith Jackson and Renton Laidlaw.

Renton Laidlaw was genius.  I remember watching an early round coverage, and was chatting with the other guy about WWII airplanes taking off from a nearby airfield.  But when it was time to switch back to the action, he did, and never got too far astray.  And I learned something.

Brilliant.

Even though he was part of it, he never acted as though he was the reason people were tuning in.  I get the sense if he was never shown on camera he didn't care.

He is also the only man I will give a pass for wearing a tie and short sleeves.

I prefer the way it's done on the European Tour with regards to the commentary. They don't make it about the announcers, in fact, you rarely even see them and the interviewers at the end are not visible, just the player. Also, the commentary is pretty much straightforward and much easier to watch and listen too. The 1st network that changes to that style will be off to the races.

Also, I've had it with S. Sands. His commentary is like, "Oh, his shoe is untied, now he's tying it, oh, he missed an eyelet, and now has it tied with 2 loops. He's so good at that and now he takes 3 steps to his ball and is now ready to hit either a 3yard fade or a draw."  Not to mention he just falls over all these players like he's going to give them a big kiss after his interview either on the course or in the booth.

Let's get some ppl with some balls and get the woke out.

Another in a never ending stream of "Let's ask Mikey . . . . he hates everything!"

Hating golf announcers is apparently . . . . "Life", lol.

Some are less annoying than others, but I have a cure this weekend - I'm not watching!  And if I was watching, wouldn't pay much attention to them anyway - plenty of other things to do when watching the "average" event and I just look up for golf shots and pretty much deaf to the rest.

Next week ---- it's the Masters!  Enjoy the tournament and check the stuff CBS doesn't care if you care about at Washington Road!

This is pretty much how I watch all golf other than majors. Mute the coverage so I can listen to an audible book while browsing the Interwebs. Other times FF through a round and only watch the shots. Makes for a much more enjoyable experience.

I have two major issues with he coverage.

First, there are WAAAAYYYY to many commercials. Sometimes they break away and then come back do some sort of 30 second fluff and then show ONE PUTT by a player and then break away again.  And this “Playing Through” crap is just that…crap.

Second, can anyone explain to me why on earth when a ball lands on the green or a slope nearby does the cameraman zoom in real tight on the ball and shows, well….a ball on the ground in a 12” square as we track it rolling. While zoomed in, we have no idea if it rolling away from the pin, towards a bunker or water, taking a slope to get it closer to the hole, etc. The shot literally shows a BALL. We have no reference to where it is going and at what speed. Maybe zoom out a bit so we have some context.

Good thing NBC is not covering the big event in Augusta this week, then.

Of course that means by Thursday we will have a "CBS/ESPN Sucks!" thread here. 🙄

ESPN/CBS actually do a pretty solid job covering the Masters. Of course Augusta does limited commercials which is nice.

But give me SVP over Nantz any day of the week

Possibly not, but they seem to have better flow.

I admit to watching very little of the CBS coverage this year, but there was a reason.

I am quoting myself because I tried to watch last week, and couldn’t stand it.  I think it’s still much better than CBS, but the gap is narrowing.

Bumping this thread 2.5 years later, but CBS has left NBC in the dust. They’ve got way better camera angles and the production quality just looks way higher than a NBC broadcast. I also enjoy Trevor, he’s a little vanilla but he does his homework

2.5 years and zero complaints about NBC.   Hmmm
I watch whoever is broadcasting this weeks tourney.

How many desk people does NBC need??? So much fat to trim. Can’t keep Kizz. I don’t want to s*** on the guy, but really..? Who at NBC was behind this. He says nothing. He’s won nothing. It’s absurd. Maybe, maybe, If he became a whisky drunkard that chugged cigars all day.. but it would probably still look and sound like the only in Tom Sawyer’s class that turns in his homework. A manly man, Kizz izz not.

Of the current talent, put Faxon and McGinley (if he’d take it) next to Hicks (I guess) and cut the crap out with the rotating voices that all sound the same.

As Soon as I hear Tirico take over I know what’s coming: pointless, meaningless stat graphics that wedge big fat company ads into the flow of playing coverage. What a turn off.

The camera shots are ancient and schizo. Perfect camera of Li pitching on #5, and instead of staying with the shot, which could’ve looked awesome with the blue water/sky and Irish green tiered putting surface—pin up on top—it wa age same old same old cut away to a extreme close up of the ball rolling back to almost his feet. Could’ve caught the pitch in its entirety in same shot. Completely uncreative.
