NBC's coverage is godawful

I wonder if NBC just doesn’t broadcast enough golf compared to CBS to invest in it like they should

They've got 14 events on the PGAT including 2 majors, the players, Ryder cup/presidents cup. They also show 4 of the women's majors, the Solheim Cup and the LPGA's tour championship as well. That's 20 events by my count and it's not like they’re new to broadcasting golf either. They've been doing it since the 1980s

I find it hard enough concentrating on the golf to concern myself with the chatter and background noise of the commentators. The complainers must have rabbit ears like Collin Mongomery.🤣

So you're actually wondering that the NBC network family, which includes Golf Channel under it's management, doesn't televise enough golf? Also Sky Sports in the UK is an NBC property. Are you serious?

My post was in comparison to CBS coverage. There’s a lot of cost cutting going on. That’s why, at least publicly why, Azinger was let go. NBC has 10 weekend events on broadcast TV while CBS has 20 events. Fewer events, less money will be spent on production.

You're cherry picking when simply considering weekend events. Look at the overall amount of golf that NBC/GC/Sky spends broadcasting golf in total. Likely more than CBS. Easily

Yes, but the budget for Golf Channel Thursday-Sunday coverage is minimal because the ratings aren’t broadcast ratings. Weekend broadcast coverage is where the money is at and NBC doesn’t have enough of them. Not an excuse, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that's the reason.

Across the board NBC spends more money on golf than CBS does. Main network or not. You or anybody else has zero idea of the actual money NBC spends  how it impacts it's golf coverage. Is CBS possibly better at broadcasting golf than NBC. Could be. Just people's subjective opinions. People whining here and social media isn't the best arbiter of reality.

It’s 100% true that CBS is better at broadcasting golf than NBC is. I was just stating one reason I think that is.

Golf Channel laid off 100s of employees in 2020 when they shifted operations from Orlando to Stamford. That's around the time when NBC's golf broadcast started going downhill IMO. They used to be the best in the game and are the worst by a mile now

The current media rights fees the PGA Tour is getting caused that. That’s the reason that Comcast is spinning off the Golf Channel. Producing golf is incredibly expensive.

I wonder if pgat enterprises could just buy a majority stake in golf channel from NBC.  NBC could take care of producing things like the DPWT and LPGA and then the PGAT just operates the rest.

Beginning in 2025 the PGA Tour took production in house for all of their events across all of the tours they are involved in. It was presented as a pretty big deal with their new production facility at TPC Sawgrass coming on line late 2024. Surprised that hasn't been discussed here more.

CBS, NBC and ESPN+ use what the PGA Tour now provides them for a general television feed from their new production facility. The networks then provide extra camera angles/coverage for their telecasts as needed and the specific networks production team then decide how to present it for steaming/over the air.

The PGA Tour has been rumored for some time to purchase GC for their own use. Especially after GC left Orlando and move to Connecticut when NBC Sports network shut down and consolidated it's operations in 2021.

What's interesting now that Comcast/(owner of NBCUniversal) has decided to spin off some of it's cable channels they are talking about starting another new sports network. What geniuses. Guess over paying for the NBA is driving that possible decision.

Am I correct in assuming that the Networks still have control of the commentators and analysts?

As far as overpaying for the NBA, I think TNT now wish that they would have over paid.

Because WRXers have no idea and nor do most care when it comes to the PGAT besides the top 10 Players. IMO

PGAT Studios is a big deal. They're now in control of all their media across all tours and all new adventures. If I'm understanding correctly, the players now have equity.

I don’t know if I would use the word “in control.”

“There was one massive wrinkle in this plan of serving multiple networks with one universal fleet. More than 2½ years was spent building nine new production trucks that would be customizable to suit the specific needs for NBC and CBS, as each network is still in control of all the talent and crew and how it presents each tournament. The tour had to get both network producers to sign off on everything they needed in those trucks that were being custom built by Pennsylvania-based NEP Group.“

So basically like "NBC Sports Network" which they decided to get rid of in 2020 when they rolled out Peacock? What an absolute joke. NBC is run by a bunch of incompetent people. Peacock is a money loser for them so the geniuses at NBC decided it would be a good idea to raise the monthly price of the service by $3.
