Golf & fishing - Where?

Recommended Posts

Hopefully this is the right place for this.

So, currently live in Utah, do lots of skiing , mountain biking, etc. Golf public courses.

I’ll be retiring in the next year or two, now thinking about a warm retirement place.

Love fishing, especially saltwater. I want to look at some places where I could kayak fish for reds, maybe stripers, trout, ‘cuda, possibly snook & tarpon. On top of that, have plenty of good golf options nearby.

places to consider:  Atlantic coast (N & S Carolina) “Redneck Riveria” (Alabama/Florida Panhandle), other coastal Florida areas.

Possibly Costa Rica, etc?

suggestions, experiences, anecdotes?

thanks

Born and raised in NC here. Charleston, SC is one of the most beautiful cities in the USA. If I were to ever move back to the east coast, it'd be there.

Or go nuts and head for the Outer Banks of NC. Nag's Head is one of my favorite places on earth.

Based on my research that is based on the same criteria South Carolina is where you want to be. Blufton and Hilton head area.

Jacksonville beach and ponte vedra also look good.

port saint lucie another good option.

I currently live in coastal south Texas. Home of world class fishing and mediocre golf. It gets the job done for now.

Southern Florida would probably have the largest variety of fish species to chase. I'm in Alabama and the fishing on the coast and bays is ok, but nothing compared to southern Florida and the east coast. I enjoy fly fishing and my ideal spot would probably be South Florida, you could chase all of those species except for maybe stripers.

Doesn't fit some of your fishing, but Chattanooga is an awesome place to golf and fish.  There are many rivers to kayak fish plus the Chickamauga Lake, one of the top lakes in the country to fish.

Sweetens one day, mountain trout the next. Sounds like a pretty good retirement. Lots of mountain biking in the area too.

Can't beat Costa Rica for fishing and cost of living. Golf is not as good but they have a couple decent ones. As far as a balance of great fishing AND great golf you would be hard pressed to find a better area than the "Treasure Coast of Florida. You have awesome fishing and between Stuart and Jupiter you have some good courses to choose. The Emerald Coast in the Panhandle of Florida is a good option as well though the fishing is not quite as good.

The fishing is world class on the Outer Banks but the golf is lacking, short tight courses that are slammed during the summer. In Winter people aren't the issue but the wind is brutal coming off the ocean or sound.

Options open up if you are open to driving an hour for golf but if golf is the main priority I would look elsewhere and visit for the fishing.

Yeah, good point about golf out there. We took a trip out there nearly every year when I was a kid but I actually don't think dad and I ever played much. Played tons in SC though.

I recall some fun courses around Wilmington. And that's all of what, like 30mins from Myrtle? Haven't done that drive in probably 25 years.

Southern Florida.  No state income tax.  Maybe Fort Myers or Naples area worth a look on the gulf side.

I don't know how much snook and tarpon you will run into in the panhandle.  I am sure they get caught there on occasion but you got to be down in south florida for them to be prolific.  If there is a very, very cold snap (Florida relative) it can kill the snook.  Want to say that happened in tampa bay some years back.  give you an idea where they are and that they are on the ragged edge of the northern range in winter there.

If your looking for fishing Fort Myers I wouldn’t come here. Red tide every year has destroyed it. I have been here for 10 years and it is worse every year. (People that vacation here really don’t the quality of the ocean water-Filthy) Everything you catch has to be thrown back. Snook,Reds you can’t keep them. As for golf it is great from May-Dec. After that very expensive if you can even find a tee time. Go on Golf Now and look around. Any nice course and there open tee times are about 4pm or later. Vero Beach or Jacksonville is where I would look.

If price is not an option, I think the Florida or Hilton Head would be the best. All or most of these places are out of my payband (prob 800k-1.5 for a decent house) but the golf and fishing are probably the best. My ultimate option although very expensive would be Maui. Awesome golf, and shore fishing, deep sea fishing of course for tuna, marlin, etc...

Wasn't it Oregon that had to relocate a pro tournament because all the homeless had taken over the area and Oregon officials didn't want to tell them to leave?  I heard the TV coverage (Golf Channel?) didn't want to have to deal showing the people in tents.

Better than the bat signal!

Best combo of golf and fishing in my view is the Destin area. The fishing is amazing - inshore, pier, surf and deep sea are all productive and plentiful. You can hire a boat and guide very easily, but honestly some sand fleas or frozen shrimp or squid from the beach is very entertaining.  The beaches and water in this area is simply amazing.  The golf is also very good in the area.

Ft Myers area has great fishing, less than decent golf. Same throughout the Keys. Atlantic coast has inferior beaches/water clarity but some good golf. The Destin area is hard to beat for both worlds.

Dang I hate to see this. Been a while but for about 5 years we took a winter trip to Ft Myers, Pine Island or Sanibel and the fishing was awesome. I know red tide is a warm weather affliction, and you shouldn’t be eating Snook anyway. We always released reds but kept and ate plenty of specks, mangrove snapper, the occasional cobia or spanish mackerel made the cooler too. I’m heading to Destin in 2 weeks and hoping to revive the New Year’s trip soon. I’ll keep this SW Florida situation in mind.

@golfandfishing There isn't much in the way of snook and tarpon that far north right?

I'll be in the PCB next week fishing.  Plan to do the fish bites/fish gum and sand fleas for pomps.  I caught good mangos off some deep docks in the fall, do they migrate out or can I expect to find them in the same places now as then?  Also, have the trout moved out of the creeks on the flats yet?  Flounder moved back in?

As someone who frequently visits Charleston SC, I'd go there. You won't get snook (only really in the Florida Mangroves) and I am not sure about Barracuda (from a kayak at least) but I know the rest are in Charleston. In terms of golf, Charleston has some beautiful courses in itself (Shadowmoss, Daniel Island club, heck even their muni course is pretty nice). And if that's not enough, you're an hour from the Ocean Course and other top dollar courses (Turtle Point, Cassique, etc).

Hope this helps:)

I haven’t seen snook in Destin no. There’s some tarpon at certain times of the year from what I hear from guys who kayak off the beach. Your other questions- I dunno. I was last there for fishing in 2016. We’re going to surf fish and have always been able to catch whiting and pompano, reds in winter but I don’t know if they are still there this time of year. Might take a guide one day, will probably hit the pier one day. Playing Raven once. Then back home.

Yes but Bend Oregon is 105 miles over the mountains from PDX. THe town now has a population of 100K and averages only 13inches of rain a year. Oregon is a mess though no doubt that is why we moved.
