Ping PLD Custom Program

if you have the $$ and love ping putters, enjoy the experience. I love ping putters as well, but not for 1200.  im not sure any club is worth 1200 unless its Rodney's putter from Caddyshack

 

 

 

Worth is very much a relative term. Luckily, Ping has OTR options for peanuts for folks like you who don't believe putters (or clubs in general) should command a high dollar. There are LOTS like you and that's not a bad thing.

However, premium markets exist and always will:

 

A Circle T will roll the ball to the hole just the same as an OTR Scotty 
A Hive Release will roll the ball to the hole just the same as an OTR Bettinardi
The list goes on

 

I guess all in all my point is that we've got endless options at a wide array of price points for every golfer. Options are always a good thing.

That plus in how many Ping threads were people begging for a PLD line since the Vault line was very stale? How many people wished Ping made a certain model milled? Or how many wanted a certain head with a certain neck? 

 

Answer is lots and now that they can do that they're paying for it and extremely happy and as they bring out more models it will make others even happier.

Fittings have more to do with the fitter than anything else. To keep this on topic with the thread however, Ping PLD fittings are not done by Duff McChoppington at your local Worldwide golf shop. These are Pings best fitters, absolute experts in their products and the dynamics of matching heads and hosel types to specific strokes. But you still get to choose what you want but you are armed with the knowledge of how different setups work for different stroke types. From what I’m seeing, Ping has nailed it with this program and it won’t be long I’ll be on their list. The experience plus the quality of putter is worth the cost

I checked in with my fitter last night.  He got back to me this morning.  There was an issue with the finish when they got it back from the supplier last week, so it had to get sent back to be re-done.  They're hoping to have it back tomorrow, then turn it around same day to ship out.

 

I get that things don't go to plan.  It's just that I had to ask what was going on since it didn't ship last week.  Hopefully it all gets sorted out this week.

At least they revoked it for poor finish, instead of you !

Of course it was during the pandemic but my G425 irons took five months, with the eight week delivery promise blown out the window.

You are comparing apples to oranges. Mills custom putter's is a very small business with very little overhead compared to Ping, one of the largest golf supplier/manufactures in the world. And Ping has decided to basically have their tour staff build one off custom putters in their spare time through this PLD program. On top of that, they send you equipment to record your stroke or you can go to their state of the art putting facility as apart of the PLD Program. Put things into perspective and I think the cost is justified.

Didn't you get a satin blast? I wonder how that could be messed up and how bad of a mess up it was.

i guess its good that they wouldn't send it to you with a bad finish.  Still disappointing time frame.  Most likely the finishing company has been the delay for most of the time since so many people seem to be getting their putters in

i wonder if ping will ever convert this to an option like the toulon garage where you can get online and pick your putter, finish, alignment, milling, etc without the fitting.  Im guessing probably they probably don't want that many out there but it would be cool if it was 6-$800

From what I understand, their OTR PLD milled putters are mass produced in China. The Custom PLD's are made in house, in the USA, in Arizona. Because of that, I believe that is why they only do the custom options through the Custom PLD program and why there is a premium to go the custom route.

Hoping for more pics...need ideas!   I'm big on the "clean look" but I also don't want to see my putter in someone else's bag....truly the same or OTR.  Certainly not doing this for something I can get standard for half price or less.  

 

The options are going to be overwhelming...but trying to research looks prior.  Alex can tell me what performance/alignment features are best.  I do hope we get to no milling, as being able to go back for milling seems like a less permanent solution.

I’d say more cambered/arched -vs- the three areas of the tri sole so it will sit mostly flat with no rocking on the tri. Basically shaving the higher portion’s of the tri off to make it “more flat” producing a longer bottom arch.

 The Oyster finish is a patina type finish, hand applied. It comes out kind of uneven and is a dark grayish color. Double Oyster is a secondary application to darken it even more taking it towards a more blackish finish and hopefully more uniform. Think of gun bluing processes.

Question on black carbon, does that finish also season? 

 

And separately can it be removed and get to raw carbon/lighter grey rather than black?  Is that even a thing? 

 

I'm new to carbon putters so trying to learn/read about it a bit more prior to fitting.
