Ping PLD Custom Program

I’m manifesting Ping to add the Shea H to this program.  Do it Ping!!!

Received my virtual fitting kit today and immediately went through the 5 putting sessions. Curious to hear what my results mean when I meet with Alex on the 13th. 

Results were in all green but not sure what that means 

Closing Angle: 4.5 

Impact Angle: -1 

Tempo: 2.0

Lie Angle: 22.1

Shaft Lean: -4.2

Whether that's virtual fittings or in person fittings at Ping HQ Canada. They said within the coming months but that was 2.5 months ago. So maybe some point in 2023 if they need to update the fitting area at HQ in Canada. 

Heard recently it won't be in Canada until late fall (post golf season)

I have really enjoyed this thread!   39 pages in and the pics/info has just been amazing.   Saving up to have this experience when I go back to PHX in Sept.  I think just the experience itself is more what I'm after, obviously getting fit and a 1 of 1 putter will be amazing as well.  But seeing PING HQ and the whole experience just seems top notch.

 

I have a couple of questions....

 

1.  I have an OTR Anser PLD putter, with a graphite shaft.  So are people saying that the CUSTOM PLD program shaft is different than this one?  Did I read that correctly going through the thread? 

 

2. I LOVE a sound slot, but I haven't seen anyone do it yet (or maybe I missed it).  Can they do these on the Anser 2D or Kushin style putters?

there’s a custom pld anser d for sale in the BST right now that someone went through all the trouble of being virtually fit for, then never even used, and is now selling for a loss.

You are correct. The PLD custom graphite shaft is different than the retail version. Sounds like it is significantly stiffer. 
 

No one here or anywhere else that I’ve seen has posted that they have a sound slot. But also no one has said they asked and have been told no. You could always reach out to ping and ask. They’ve been really responsive to me and others reaching out even before they book with questions like this.

Ya it is GolfWRX so it doesn't surprise me!  I'm a club ho, especially with putters.  But man, if I went through all of that I don't even think I would be tempted to sell-would just put it up in my office or something.  But like I said, I think just the experience for me is worth it.  But if I am going to do it, I am going to go in person, I'll wait till I am in PHX or make a special trip for it.  Grew up 1/2 my life in PHX and the Ping brand reminds me of a ton of great memories as a kid.

i kinda regret not getting the full in-person fitting experience, but with a brand new baby at home i couldn’t really justify taking off to arizona for a few days for a putter haha. 

 

that being said, purely fitting wise, i don’t feel like i lost anything by doing it virtually.

Thanks i appreciate it.  Ya according to everyone here the actual fitting is spot on whether you do in person or virtual.  I am after going to ping and seeing the vault, putting on that big arse slab of concrete, getting the tour pro experience because otherwise I would never get it.  Gonna pay for it instead as I can't earn it with my game 😂

Closing angle:  the amount of closure from the end of your backstroke until impact.  4.5 likely puts you in the "slight arc" style.

Impact angle:  the relative closure between how you set up and impact.  You impact at 1 degree closed if I remember the signs right.

Tempo:  ratio of back stroke to forward stroke.  2.0 is considered within the medium range of 1.8 to 2.2 IIRC.

Lie angle:  22.1 from Ping means you're 2.1 degrees flat.  They do 90-22.1 = 67.9.

Shaft lean:  -4.2 is a very hands forward impact.  This tells them how much loft you need.  Likely they'd put you in a higher loft putter than standard 3 degrees.

I requested a sound slot for mine and Alex told me that it's not available right now.  Apparently the faces are too thick and the sound isn't right.  He did say that they're continuing to work on it and may eventually have it right a bit further down the line.

Thick face and a sound slot is a really weird/sound feedback. It's almost non-existent and useless other than a weight reduction I guess.

That's what Alex alluded to as well.  Further, he said the slot didn't look right when they tried it.  Triangulating that data, it's really not practical, useful, or meaningful at this point.  I'm holding out for a Kushin H at a later date with a slightly thinner face since it was the first PING model I ever purchased.  The sound slot in the original is perfect and I'd love something that is close to the original in sound.

Leave it to Ping to factor all of that into a putter when others will just cut the slot and that's all.

 

For me a thicker face and a smooth to light milling is perfect for feedback and feel. But everyone is different and seems like Ping is trying their best to get a putter for everyone and correctly.

Im going to be out there in august so as soon as they post the schedule for then im booking the in person fitting

 

i usually like very plain so i dont think i want my initials or any quotes on it.  also unsure on head material and finish

I took part in an in person PLD fitting during the middle of January.  I was fitted by Alex and like many others in this thread the whole experience exceeded my expectations.  
 

My gamer for the last 4 years is a Ping My Day from the Karsten 1959 line.  It’s a basic cast putter, but it is one of the few times Ping made the My Day in a more modern weight.  I took this down to Phoenix with me and showed it to Alex, but I’d already sent him some data from my home course and he informed me that although it was a great putter it didn’t really fit my stroke.  I was pretty disappointed because I love the My Day head style and I feel comfortable with it even if it doesn’t fit me. 
 

I’d already made up my mind that if I was fitted into a readily available at retail head style I wouldn’t buy a putter, but I was fit into a Ping Anser 4 and also a Anser 2D with a little bit longer neck then the ones seen at retail.  
 

After we putted with both putters inside for about 40 minutes Alex said that we should go and putt outside to get a better feel.  Right as we were getting ready to go outside Alex reaches in his pocket and said “let me throw a monkey wrench in your decision” and pulls out the last My Day head that Ping has available of the small amount they made up for its tour staff.  He says, “just since you mentioned how much you love this style I figured I should show you this, even if it’s not your best fit.”  
 

We get outside and I putt about 10 putts from 5 feet with both Ansers and although I’m putting ok they aren’t really jumping out at me.  We move back to 20 feet and I putt 5 each with both Ansers and don’t make any putts.  Alex then hands me the My Day and says let’s just try this one.  Well of course I make the next putt from 20 feet and Alex starts laughing and says “I think we know which putter you need to get”. I tell him that “I gotta stick with what’s comfortable and I can’t believe they had one of these left, it feels like it’s meant to be.”
 

I tried to keep the putter itself pretty minimal, but I did choose the black finish along with the black shaft.  Just so it reminds me more of my current gamer I chose against having any face milling and it feels pretty similar, but is definitely a little softer due to being made out of carbon.  I can’t imagine needing another putter in my life, but this is golfwrx after all 😂.

 

Anyone who is on the fence about doing the fitting I can’t recommend it enough.  I went in with pretty high expectations and Alex went above and beyond.  I told him that ping equipment has played a role in many of my fondest golf memories and I have no doubt this putter will continue that tradition.
