Ping PLD Custom Program

Colton got back to me today and unfortunately they aren’t able to do the “PING” in the cavity like they did for the first gen custom PLD’s. Pretty disappointing as I don’t love the PLD logo in the cavity. Tough spending this money and not being able to get what you’re looking for. No knock on Colton, great guy and not his fault.

That's pretty disappointing.  I understand they're trying to build the brand but why not just put PLD on the face?  We know it's a PLD and a PING.  A little creativity would be great.

What about a cavity like this?  Only being able to get PLD in the cavity would preclude me from ordering one.

I have done a few custom putters with Ping (finish, paint fill, adding a sight dot, shaft changes) and they were very helpful. The color I changed a TR Scottsdale to was called StarShot and I actually don’t think they have it any more, maybe now it’s that donut one.  Another of the ones I sent in was a second hand Vault 2.0 (which at the time was a ‘tour’ model in a way, the only PLD I saw at that time was this camouflage Ketsch).  But they didn’t care, and they did it.  Just fill out a form or call them and they can fill out the repair form and email it to you to sign.  Or they could tell you ‘no’ too lol, but just gotta call ‘em.

As cool as that is, I much prefer the standard PING. I don’t understand why they can’t do it. I’m headed back to HQ in Phoenix on Thursday for a full bag fitting. I might speak with someone there to see what they can do.

Please do!  I just signed up for my in-person fitting set for early next month.  I have already had correspondence with Alex and I’m gonna ask as well and see what I can find.

If an off the rack PLD putter can have PING in the cavity it would be weird for them to not allow a custom the same.

100%. He said the milling program had been updated to the new PLD design and he reached out to the tour department to see if they had any old anser 30 heads with the PING logo and they didn’t? Seems odd to me

Keep pressing them. 
they told me that too when I ordered my second PLD b60. 
I flat told them a classic putter like the b60 had to have ping in the cavity. 
they got back to me a few days later and said they would do it as long as I understood it would add a few weeks. 
they also agreed to just put PLD on the face without the block milled out around it

Ya I just sent him an email. For almost $2k CAD I want to love this thing and I just don’t love that PLD logo in the cavity. I don’t see why they shouldn’t be able to do that given almost all of their putter lines have the PING milling in the cavity….

Colton got back to me this morning…. and they still can’t do it. Apparently since they have updated the CAD files and milling program for these putters, they no longer offer the ping in the cavity which is really unfortunate. The only thing he can offer is the Redwood City ping logo (below) but it would take 4 more weeks and truthfully I don’t really like the logo more than the PLD. Pretty disappointing. Let me know what you guys think. He included a photo of my putter on the product line also…

If it were me I would bail and order a putter I would love, especially for that kind of coin.

The only issue is the Anser 30 in patina at 365g is the only putter I want / love haha. It’s the perfect setup for me I just can’t believe they are unable to accommodate this request… I’m sure I’m being a little naive but I’m assuming they still have the old CAD files and milling program in the archives so why not pull it out for requests like this? The new PLD’s in golf shops still feature PING in the cavity so I’m not sure why they can’t use those…. 🤷🏻‍♂️🙈

I recently bought a used PLD Custom Oslo (carbon) and sent it to Ping UK to adjust to my specs (reshafted to 36" and 1 degree up, face balanced bend; refreshed the paintfill).  I absolutely love it. Maybe someone on this thread will recognise it as a putter they had made then released into the wild...

 

Couple of questions - for anyone who has a black carbon PLD custom, how much/how quickly does that finish wear? Mine has some fading on the corners of the sole. I don't mind it at all and may just let it do its thing.  If I was going to try to preserve it, as well as towelling dry after every use and somehow keeping the interior of the cover bone dry too (a tough task in Scotland), does anyone use oil or the like on a carbon PLD at home, on this specific finish?

Personally, I think the PLD in the cavity looks amazing. The Redwood City logo is also a cool throwback. IMO, these putters are custom fit and made to be played. If this is the only putter you want/love and you plan to actually play it, then I wouldn’t stress too much about what the cavity says.

Idk my spidey senses are calling BS on the updated CAD files. Seems like upper managements decision to not allow the Ping logo on the PLD custom to try and diversify the lines. Why would Ping not have a CAD file for the Ping logo? Its their most recognizable logo which I am sure they still put on their tour putters.

Regardless if it makes sense or not, PING has made a design/branding decision to go with PLD in the cavity. Early on, you could only get PING in the cavity despite people asking for PLD or something else.

For sure. It’s disappointing but I’ve decided to just go through with the PLD in the cavity. Would rather have one that not have one at all. I’ve always wanted a DS72 so maybe I’ll pick up one of the hovland versions just to make myself happy haha

As many ppl have already pointed out - for the amount of $ that Ping is charging for a “Custom” PLD putter, saying NO to having PING in cavity is bullsh*t…. It’s not like ppl are asking for a 1 off custom stamping, it was already what they were putting there. The whole “new CAD” is just an excuse. I loved going through this thread and seeing all the cool PLD putters and hearing about the process. But this sorta thing is very off putting.

Totally get what everyone is saying, and it is odd that they can't bust out the old CAD and make 'PING' happen, but I for one am gonna go with something different than OTR PING in the cavity.  I want it to be different than what I can buy off the rack.  I will most likely do the Redwood Ping logo, but the PLD isn't bad.  But ya, they should have more options than those two for sure.  Still a Ping fanboy and excited for the process and to get a custom putter.

100%. Nothing feels better than having a true 1 of 1 stick made just for you. Unfortunate that they couldn’t do it but I’m sure I’ll fall in love with it all the same. It’s been a great experience and I’m excited to give the PLD and full bag fitting a juicy write up in here. It all goes down on Thursday and I can’t wait!

Dude don’t fret too much.  The PLD is still great looking.  And I am all ears for this fitting write up.  Mine is in 16 days and I’m beside myself.  I hit the Blueprint S for the first time the other day and could not believe how good they felt and performed.  I’ll leave with 13 new clubs (maybe more) guaranteed.  
 

Oh, and a little birdie tells me I’ll be picking up my putter that day too.  That’s like a 3.5 week turnaround.  Crazy!
