Playing the English Top 100

Recommended Posts

On the Top 100 golf courses website you can record and review all the courses you've played. This got me thinking about how cool it would be to complete the English top 100. I decided upon the English top 100 because I live here and its a hell of a lot more possible than the world top 100. Would like to do the GB&I top 100 but not so easy to get away for multiple golf holidays.

I imagine it will take many years but it's a fun quest and a fairly unique thing to do in golf as opposed to other sports.

The only issue is that there is some variance between different lists at the bottom end of which golf courses make the list. The Top 100 list is a bit outdated as it is from 2019 whilst the Golf Monthly and NCG top 100s are from 2022. Anyway will see what I play and will probably play more than just one lists top 100.

These are the ones I've already played on the Top 100 Golf Courses list;

Royal St George's (1)
Sunningdale New (4)

Swinley Forest (5)

Woodhall Spa (7)
West Sussex (11)
Berkshire Red (22)
Woking (27)
Berkshire Blue (36)
Royal Ashdown Forest (39)

Beau Desert (55)

The Addington (58)
Royal Wimbledon (82)

In addition to this I've played Luffenham Heath which is 96th on the NCG100. Hopefully it'll be in the next edition of the Top 100 Golf Courses list.

Scheduled for this year already is the 27 holes at St George's Hill and a round at Ganton.

Now that I've decided to try and do this ideally I would like to play more courses each year. So was hoping to try get on at Fulford and Alwoodley and possibly one more at least to get started this year.

So I was wondering if anyone else has taken on a similar quest?

Do you have any advice or anything you wish you had known from the beginning etc? All advice, thoughts and comments welcome.

Many of these were played years ago in my mini tour days. The past 5 years the rest were played as part of my golfing friends group.

My advice is to go enjoy the courses with others.

if east devon is teignmouth Im up to 43 so far, there are a few more I have my eye on that covid interupted

however, these lists are inherently silly imo. In no universe is RND or Perranporth better than Goswick, there are absolutely not 52 english courses better than moortown, and I would never compare links to heathland or parkland anyway.

Don't become single minded about an arbitrary list. There are unlisted courses which are at least as good (or fun) as some listed. Be sure to look out for some lesser light courses on your travels.

Think I'd agree. The top 100 website you reference never seems all that busy, I mean I love Sandwich (number 1?) but I've played it within the past few years when mushrooms have been growing in the bunkers.

A Hollinwell or an Ipswich have much more wow factor. I think if you get hung up on must plays from the list, if you have a bad day, raining, play badly, or course not in good condition, you're not going to get the most from it.

Listen to @El Gringo he made some amazing recommendations to me last year for a budget golf trip I took with the wife.

No my personal ranking wouldn't match the posted list.

I have played several courses that are not on this list that I think should certainly be there and then a few on this list I do not rate highly at all.

Cavendish is a prime example, not on the "official" list but one of my favorite course I've ever played,.

Oh yeah for sure, I'm playing several not on the list. For example this weekend I'm going with friends to Church Stretton and the pair of Hawkestone courses. Then got a few local opens pencilled in.

Tbh I think the NCG100 is probably more 'correct', I think Cavendish is 62nd on that list.

I'm surprised how much difference there is between these lists, even as high as the top ten there are quite big differences.

You will enjoy Church Stretton if the weather cooperates. Great views and a handful of cracking holes. Welshpool isn't too far away...don't miss it! Of course Kington is fairly close and it's a course not to be missed either.

One of the great things about England is it is relatively small and you can plan regional trips for whatever ti.e frame works best for you whether it's a weekend break or a more lengthy sojourn. I like to use Google maps to map out the courses on my bucket list. It's really helpful in figuring out routes and order of play. I already have four future trips mapped out to play 40 courses in the south of England.  Make sure to mix in some hidden gems with the more famous courses. El Gringo is a great resource for some of the lesser known places and courses that are great value

46 by my count. The nice thing about England is almost all the courses are relatively easy to get access to. Queenwood and Wisley I would expect you'll need to be creative to get onto. Otherwise there really aren't any US style privates where you can't get on without knowing a member.

Like others have said, this list is almost certainly not actually the best 100 golf courses and you'd do well to play a few others along the way, but as far as a focus goes, it's not a bad place to start if you want to expand your play count. I don't live in England anymore, so it's not particularly likely that I'll be increasing my count any time soon and doing the equivalent in the US is challenging.

If you had to pick 6 to play in the Liverpool area what would they be? Just seems like so many good ones..

From what I've heard/played myself, in no particular order:

Hoylake, Birkdale, Lytham, Formby, Hillside, West Lancs

As you say, there are so many good courses in that region.

You will enjoy Church Stretton if the weather cooperates. Great views and a handful of cracking holes. Welshpool isn't too far away...don't miss it! Of course Kington is fairly close and it's a course not to be missed either.

We got super lucky with the weather yesterday. What a beautiful course, so different to anything I've ever played. For example I've never played a blind par 3 before and never seen par 3s with guidance posts halfway telling you where to play! It's a very quirky course but I loved every minute of it and would highly recommend it to anyone.

This is the second hole, a par 3, the tree on the right/sheep before the green is the line. I was pleased to birdie this after tripling the first haha

The third, another par 3 where you can't see the flag, its out on the right behind the hill.

I would probably pick courses I haven't seen or not seen for a long time. Being cheeky with the area: Sandiway, Castletown, Southport and Ainsdale, Formby, Manchester and St Anne's Old Links.

Pleased you enjoyed CS. 3 is a cracking short hole. So is 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 & 13. Conditioning has improved a ton in recent years. It's a lovely town as a well. Easy to spend a night there or use it as a base.

I was pleased to play the holes you've mentioned in one under par but sadly a triple on the first and doubles at 14 (ob tee shot) and 17 (tree trouble off the tee) resulted in a level handicap round.

I see you've placed it in your personal top 100 and I would certainly agree that it is a unique and magical experience.

Off to Hawkestone today.

The next five I have targeted are Mullion, Halifax, Newquay, Parkstone & Charnwood Forest.

I haven't played Mullion or Halifax but I played Newquay 20 years ago and loved it and Parkstone and Charnwood Forest I ticked off last year. Charnwood especially is my idea of a true hidden gem. No one knows the course when you mention it, the layout is great, scenery superb and when walking off the course you just want to go back out again. I highly recommend playing 18 holes there as the different tee sets make a real difference on a few of the holes.

Played Charnwood a week or so ago. There are a handful of seriously sloping fairways! How does one keep the ball on the short stuff in high summer? For me its a minor gem. The price is right, there is some funk, nice country setting, dullish greens though. I don't think its in the class of Painswick, Kington, Cleeve Hill, Church Stretton and Welshpool, but if in the area its worth stopping in for a quick 9.
