Single for the New Course

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone.    Planning on doing St. Andrews area with the wife and kid next June.  I'm the only golfer.  Planning on playing every day.  Just wondering what is the deal with a single getting on a the New Course?  I'm not trying to play the old course this trip.  I'd just like a little more insight on how they accommodate walk ons (I've looked for the next six months and there's no tee times at all available for the New Course).  If anyone had any insight on this, let me know.   The old course ballot is written about at length but it seems as though its easy enough to get on at the New but there's little info.

Side note: My course list in order of preference is (based on available tee times as a single are)

New

Jubilee

Elie

Crail

Lundin

Castle

Panmure

(playing berwick and gullane on this trip so i'll pass on carnoustie and kingsbarns this time in case you're wondering why)

Old course "walkons" are only one way - these days, show up at the starter shack and line up - you need to be there about 2am or earlier.  Should get out by 10am.

For the Ballot:

You can join the ballot if you are a 2some two days in advance.

You can try BallotBuddy and be paired with a random single if drawn for the ballot

I believe if you buy the 3 day unlimited package you can make one guaranteed tee time each day. I know you can’t do the 3 day advanced times package as a single. If you can’t make a tee time as a single you can check with them the afternoon before and see if they have available spots. Send them an email to confirm what is your best option. They are very helpful.

Either of the Fairmont courses (last resort)

Since we'll have the family, I'm trying to keep my rounds under 150$.  Any input is welcomed and appreciated.

Check into Kinghorn and Burntisland if your budget is stretched. Both are good, but not quite the level of your list. Also, Anstruther is a quick 9 in a pretty spot if you have a day with a tight schedule. Be sure to get the family on Himalayas. You may need to book it these days So don't leave it until last minute.

Not sure how it will be in June... my last trip was end of April beginning of May this was pre-covid. Walked on as single to any course I wanted to, except the Old Course. I had the three day pass and would basically grab the first tee time on the Jubilee or New. Walk off after 18, and ask at the starter shack which course had the next opening and go play it within 30 minutes. I seemed to end up getting sent out with locals mostly.

I like the Jubilee over the New, but both are great to play.

Great to hear.  My plan/preference for Fife is (tell me what you think...)

1.New

2.Jubilee

3.Elie

4.Crail/Balcomie

5.Castle

5.Lundin

6.maybe Panmure

I already have a tee times at Gullane and North Berwick and those will be my big spends for the trip so not going to try to play Carnoustie or Kingsbarns this trip.  They'll be there next time.  I figured I could get tee times for all the non R&A courses I could and then spend the days I have nothing waiting for the starter to slip me in there.  Thanks again.  I appreciate it.

That’s a great plan. I’m more a fan of the Craighead course at Crail but def get to Panmure if you can. If you have some time Kilspindie is a great one too right by Gullane.

Eden > Panmure? Going off some photos I’ve seen of Eden it looked boring but I’m very open to it.

Not saying Eden is better than Panmure, but it's good, relatively cheap and convenient. The downside of Eden is a few of horrible newish holes at the far end of the links. But Panmure starts and ends with average holes of no distinction. I don't think the quality gap is that much.

When I was there last fall, the New was available for walk ups every morning. So you had to get there a 7 (or whatever the prescribed time was) to choose your time. Same as a poster above, I never had trouble on any of the non-Old SA Trust courses and really enjoyed them all, especially the chance to play with locals. They couldn't have been more warm and welcoming. Other courses you just have to call in right at the prescribed time the day before (I want to say 10 am) and they'll tell you what's available. I was there during covid so they were giving me an entire 4some even when I said I was a single, and then would get paired iwth singles by the start day-of, but that meant I needed to be quick to get through on the phone.

Of your list, I played 4 of the 6 (no Crail or Panmure). I think you have them in the correct order, but I'd slide Eden ahead of Lundin, which I found to be 4-5 excellent holes. I'd play it again, but if you can get the 3-day pass in SA, I'd put Eden (or a second pass at New or Jubilee) ahead of it. Personally I liked the Jubilee miles more than New, but I'm sure it's a coin flip how many like which better.

I left Crail off because its price had crept up to be significantly higher than others in the area and decided I might as well just add another round at the Old for the difference (I want to say 60 pounds difference).
