I’ve played it 4 times…… Payed half as much to play Ballybunion, Tralee, and Lahinch. There’s no comparison between them.

Those are all great courses.  Can’t say they’re superior to Pebble.  Bally and Lahinch equal, yes, I can get see some people saying that.  Tralee is miles behind in architecture.

I grew up 15 mins or so from Innisbrook and played it quite often. It can be really hit or miss, and as mentioned here suffers greatly post tournament. I’ve never thought it was worth what they charge, I usually just wasn’t paying full price. It’s unfortunate, because that is an awesome property with great history and a lot of potential.

Played the Island course this past Sunday.  Only paid $70 since a friend volunteered for the tournament and got a random deal emailed over to him.  Course was in decent shape for the price but hearing they charge $320 in season seems like highway robbery for what it is.

Always Interesting to hear other views on courses. I’ve heard many say, and I tend to agree somewhat that the back 9 at Tralee may be the best collection of 9 consecutive holes in the world. While I agree the piece of land that Pebble is built on special, the actual architecture of the holes is just ok. Of the 8 guys on our last Ireland trip, Tralee was ranked #1, Bally #2, and Lahinch #3. When I asked how those courses compared to Pebble they all said they were far superior and in a different class than pebble. I’m really looking forward to compare Carne, Enniscrone, Narin & Portnoo, Donegal, and Rosses Point to them on my trip next month.

Yeah you raised a great point.  A course is how good the golfer thinks it is.  That being said 98% of golfers really don’t know much about architecture.  Tom Doak - probably the best architect alive and most knowledgeable about architecture - rates Tralee a 5 (of 10) and Pebble a 9.  I agree with him.  That being said golf courses are there to enjoy.  They certainly don’t have to be considered great to have fun on them.  Irish courses are a blast.

I wonder what he rates Pastiempo if he thinks Pebble is a 9????

I believe an 8, but I don’t have it in front of me right now.  If Pasa properly restored their course (clean up barrancas, rejoin 1-9 and 6-7 fairways) it’s a 9 in my book.

Architecture and hole quality I have it head and shoulders above pebble. I’ll have to read his comments, cause I just didn’t see the hole quality at pebble rating that high. To each his own I guess.

I think Pebble and Pasa could both be better.  IMO they are somewhat dumbed down due to heavy public play.  If they were private with 75% fewer rounds they could restore some cool features.

Always interesting talking design with others. Hearing the differing views and categories used to rank them. I was a rater for Golfweek for many years, but I gave it up because of how the raring criteria had changed. I hear people ding Pasa because there are houses on the course. In my mind, what’s outside the perimeter of the actual golf hole shouldn’t be considered in its judgement. However, it’s sacrilege to others. Proximity to tee boxes from greens is another one. If a course has 18 incredibly designed, well conditioned, challenging golf holes does it matter if the following tee box isn’t close? Some  will say absolutely, some it wouldn’t even be a second thought.

I agree that the houses are too close but I don’t ding the course for it.  Pasa has a little more potential but it’s pretty darn good as is.

What were the changes that made you give it up if I may ask?

It was a scam so guys could get  access to good private courses. You paid a fee and your travel costs and you were golden. Nothing to chirp about.

Golf magazine does it right. Ran runs it and appoints raters he knows that know their stuff like Tom Doak and Ian Andrew.
