PXG Fairway 15* - my thoughts

3 or 4 wood is one of those clubs that I rarely change out.  Like putters, I want to be really comfortable with a 4 wood because I use it for accuracy on shorter par 4s and to hit greens in 2 on par fives.  My 4 wood for the last 7 years has been a 16* Callaway XR Pro.

 

Decided to try my first PXG club, and ordered the 15* with the 6.0 HZRDUS Smoke black.  Set it to 16.5* with the weights set up for fade bias - swing weight D2 to match the XR Pro.

 

I never use a tee with my 4 wood, and the club is long and high. Side spin is much less than the XR Pro given the very little bend when I hit it on the range and the course. I would say the ball flight is twice as high as the XR Pro.  And the accoustics are pretty good - similar to Sim 2 driver.  It does appear to set up slightly closed, so that may turn people off a bit, but hit it six times today on the course and it never missed left.  My only miss was one I blocked about 15 yards right.

 

I had heard from friends who got the full bag deals in the past that they did not like the woods.  Seems like PXG upped their game on the fairways with Gen 5.  I am really happy with this club.

 

My driver swing speed is 99 to 102 for reference.

Been impressed with mine so far. I think they perform as well as anything else on the market but with a unique look. Reminds me of a hybrid between a PING finish and sound with a Taylormade shape and feel

TO ME the Gen 4 woods are the best they've put out. Absolutely love the crown and the ease of lining up a shot. I did hit the Gen 5 Driver but at the time it wasn't any better than my TM Sim 2 with the Autoflex. For the past month or so I've been playing the Gen 4 driver with the Autoflex. Next time I get a chance I will try the Gen 5 head for a direct comparison.

 

Anybody done a same shaft comparison with the Gen 4 head vs. the Gen 5? And how did it turn out?

I’d love to see what you get with the same shaft in both heads. But youe initial results, sounds like the Gen 4 drivers are pretty good, which is not surprising. Which head do you have?

I absolutely love my Gen1 15* 3 wood and 19*!!  They just flat out perform!  I’ve tried to go to the Gen2 in the past and it didn’t work so never tried any other Gen, but am always interested!

I just put the Gen 5 19 into play and I'm really impressed by it.  While I've gotten along with every generation of driver I've hated their woods but the Gen 5 is a game changer for PXG.  These things flat out perform, are forgiving, have improved ball speeds and flight really well.  I've turned the 19 down to 18.25, would like to add the 7 wood but I think the spacing may be too close.

IMO, the Gen5 woods are a vast improvement over the Gen 4's in performance.

PXG engineers figured a way to move the middle weight port to the extreme edge. PXG has produced clubs (driver, FW, hybrid, doesn't matter) with the most extreme positions for 3 weight ports that you could possibly have on a wood. As a result, they have turned their woods into just stupid point and shoot clubs. I knew the Gen 5 woods would be more forgiving than the Gen 4's, but I had no idea it would be such a vast improvement. I have posted before, if you spend the time to find the right combination of weights, you'll have a go to club that you can rely on. I found this very satisfying and definitely improved my game.

One other thing I discovered, order the 0311 not the XF's. The difference in forgiveness between the 0311 vs the xf in any of the woods is hard to measure. But the difference in distance between the 0311 vs the XF is measurable.
