Players iron (and woods) with GI level offset?

Binson

Recommended Posts

I've heard of the Adam Scott 680's having offset. But, I'm looking for even more.  I know, I know... that's not popular around here and most are looking for the opposite - hence the new post since I could not find anything.

I've gone around the horn recently (mostly out of boredom) - the latest being the i210 in trying to find a club that fits my swing and my eye like my Ping Eye 2's.  But, something just still doesn't fit quite right (may or may not be offset).  When I put a good swing on them, they go as expected.  But it feels foreign, which leads to lack of confidence, and poor consistency.  So, it can't quite stay in the main bag.  As an experiment, I even put the Eye 2 woods in the main bag (the 7 wood is money) and they feel more comfortable and confidence inspiring to me than modern offerings and they're staying for now.

So, I'm wondering if there's anything from the last decade or two with Eye 2 levels of offset out there in a Players CB or MB.

Yup! Have them on my list as well haha.

But, the Eye 2's are pretty solidified as my clubs of choice in that era.  Wondering if there is anything out there from the last decade or two if there are any other ideas 🙂

Base on Ping Eye2 irons: MPF rating was 745, Super Game Improvement by MPF standards. (Probably Game Improvement if Hot List had been rating them). So, you're looking for Players MB or CB that are ~SGI in offset... Problem: Players irons - then and now - aren't designed with a lot of offset.

I would suggest that the Ping G425 might come close to Eye 2 in offset specs. But, strange offset rebound in Eye2 8i and 9i disrupts comparison. (G425 in higher, more traditional RETRO lofts would also help the Eye2 mesh.)

So, a GI such as G425 with modest offset might be your best bet. And, from a statement you made...

Also, consider giving the i210 irons another chance. What you may be fighting is the old sight picture of the Eye2 irons compared with that of the i210s. It takes awhile for you to be able to see square alignment with i210 after years of seeing the Eye2 square alignment.

FaSqTilesJ.jpg.a6c3520e4ce1543a9e426c168708173a.jpgTo resolve, use this floor tile diagnostic. Put a ball down on a vertical line of the floor tiles. Then, use the horizontal line to see what square looks like with the i210s. Quite likely what you think is square alignment is not.

You'll be hard pressed to find Player's blades and CB to have the offset of a GI and SGI these days as people think it is a sacrilege.  People want them to have little to zero offset and forged (or partially forged).  I think you're better off getting clubs from the past that have those qualities (like the Eye 2, 845s and Parallax).

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

Yes.  Totally forgot.  The I5, and the I3 and I3+ are a good choice.

Even closer are the cb501. They are super forgiving with nice offset and still give great response with forged feeling. Even make a hack like me hit nice shots on occasion!

This is an awesome response btw, thank you.  I did take a look at the G425.  It is a bit smaller than other G series clubs but there wasn't any I could try in heavier shafts.  And, as clean as they are for a modern GI, I still prefer a sleeker look without plastic badges.  If I can try them out in a heavier shaft to good results though, I can get past that.  While the Eye 2 can be classifed as a GI or SGI, they have a smaller clubhead that most modern GI and SGI - without plastic badging.  That's why I was asking more about players irons, which generally share those same characteristics, just without the offset.

Interesting point about the alignment with the i210's.  I'll give that a try as well.  Going to go through an experiment with having them built exactly to the specs of my Eye 2's from a length and lie perspective - just one club longer.  Have them in power-spec (for more offset) and red dot (1 degree flat).  So, the i210 7 iron would be almost identical to the Eye 2 6 iron from a length, lie, and loft perspective.

I did try i3+ Blades, but the set I have with regular shafts were a bit too light for me and I could not time them at all.  Plus, if I'm going to be in that era of clubs anyway, I figure I might as well just stick with the Eye 2's.

Yeah, amazing how KH Lee is able to win twice on the PGA Tour with the Callaway CB X Forged that so many golfwrxers say they couldn’t play with all that offset! Can’t even look at it. Lee must be really good to continue to overcome such a horrible design deficiency.

Or, club designers know what they’re doing and know offset is there to aid launch by moving the rearward CG back and has zero to do with directional dispersion. Watch Rick Shiels. Every time he hits a shot left, he blames the offset, not his above the plane pull/draw.

Low offset is bad for my game. I am left handed but play right handed and I like to see some offset because it frames the ball in my setup. So I look for offset in the mid range. One iron not quite at the Eye 2 level (I don’t know that you will find that level in a ‘players’ iron these days) but with medium offset as a players iron is the Nike Vapor Pro Combo — one of the reasons so many players love it. Another one would be the 2021 X Forged CB. Another is the 2020 Mavrik Pro irons.

The wrx-beloved Bridgestone J15 CBs also have some offset, one of the reasons they are so good. Very similar offset to those in the og (2018) New Level 902, which were updated with less offset but can still be found.

You also can find an iron with high bounce and bend it strong. You need the extra bounce because every degree you go stronger you also reduce bounce by 1 degree — but you also add offset.

For woods with offset, take a look at the Callaway B21. Those things are bombers and the 3 wood is so easy to elevate.

Callaway AI Smoke Triple Diamond Max 9 degree driver w/Diamana TB 60S

TaylorMade Stealth 5 wood (tour issue, 17 degrees) w/TPT Power Series 16 HI

Mizuno ST230 Max 7 wood w/UST LINQ Blue 7F4

New Level irons, 702CB+ 5-6, 702CB 7-P w/Project X Rifle 5.5

New Level SPN wedges (50SS, 54VS) w/Dynamic Gold s300

Ping Glide 4.0 wedge (58, E grind) w/Dynamic Gold s300

TaylorMade custom My Spider Tour (2023) putter
