Brass tip weight in putter shaft

Has anyone had experience with this? For putters with no interchangeable sole weights would you be able to add tip weight? Would it affect the performance and playability? I like having a heavy head in my putter and counterbalancing with a weight in the grip.

Only situation where it may feel "off" is if it's a significant weight on a Longneck Plumbers/Slant neck.

Thanks for the responses! What about doing that with a stability shaft though? Anyone have any experience with that?

I have a 6g tip weight in my Kingston KP1 and Stability Tour shaft and don't notice any issues or weird feeling the tip weight.

Only used a tip weight once but have put tungsten powder down in the shaft tip a bunch and it always feels normal just heavier.

To stay on topic. What’s the heaviest tip weight you can use for a traditional plumbers neck without effecting cog?

Tip weights for steel shafts is max 9 grams, and it will pull COG against the heel side, but not enough to matter.
(9 grams is 2.64% added to ahead thats 340 grams)

Maybe our CAD expert @joostin can make some numbers and illustrations here?

I could get around to that (design one from scratch or just find one to download).  With very divided attention it could take a while, but I've always wanted to model my own putter.

Every weight addition moves the CG, but Howard is right, it will be pretty insignificant, especially the heavier the head.  Depending where the hosel is in relation to the CG, 9g addition may shift it somewhere around 0.04" (1mm) towards the heel.

I've had a brass tip weight in my putter shaft for some time.  My miss tends to be a pull.  Is it possible the tip weight (10g) could be the culprit?

I've done it tons of times and never had an issue. I've got one in the shaft of a Studio Stainless NP2 right now and it feels great.

Great to hear, been thinking about doing the same to my studio Stainless after cutting it down to 34", how much weight have you put in?

thanks /J

I think I've got 10g in there at the moment but I've gotten them as high as 16g, if I remember correctly. I have a Classics Newport in the way and the first thing I'll do is pull the shaft and shove in the biggest weight I've got.

Realized I never linked the CAD test mentioned above back to this thread...

8 gram tip weight in a Newport style putter moved the CG less than 1 mm towards the heel and 1.5 mm upward.  I think that's less than normal strike variation 😁

OK thank you for the reply!

I think I should add 12g to keep the same swing weight if I’ve done my math correctly.
how do you place it in the shaft tho?
glued on top of the putter head tip you put into the shaft (since it is a 2.5 flaired shaft)

I assume you want the weight as close to the head as possible

thanks

Hmmm, I might have to defer to someone with more experience with flair tip...I've only ever done it with plumbers necks. Might not be a bad idea to use lead or tungsten powder down the shaft like @mogc60suggested earlier in the thread. There are some instructions around here on how to do that, but it's a simple process after the head is installed...just weigh out the powder and pour it down the butt of the shaft (with the grip off) then use a long rod to push a cork down into place so it doesn't move around. Everything you need should be available on Golfworks.

If your putter is not a plumbers neck (or any other variation with the shaft inserted into the head) and you’re trying to add weight to a putter shaft that fits over a stem/post, you’re going to have to use lead/tungsten powder or adhesive weights.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tip weight without a “head” that protrudes at least slightly from the tip of the shaft, which obviously won’t fit onto the head in this circumstance.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of adding significant amounts of powdered weight to a putter shaft. I feel like it dampens/deadens the head feel quite a bit, but some may prefer that option.

yes, of course. Don’t know why I assumed you did it on a 2.5 head. I’ll try to glue something and can update you all on the results later, have some brass and led tips I can shave off and epoxy in there.

wont play around with powder and cork I think.

thanks again for the replies! 🙂

Don’t think I will experiment with the powder stuff since you also mention. Afraid it will affect the feel more than a glued on tip.
As I wrote above I’ll get back to you with the results have some weights to test. 😊

there are also rubberized tungsten tip weights that you could potentially shave down so it sits "deeper" into the tip of the shaft to accommodate a flow neck (I haven't personally tried but theoretically it seems like it would work).  but if you're concerned about dampening I suppose there is potential (though I also play a brass tip weight in one of my putters and have not found a difference in feel)

Great advice. Do you know of such tungsten weights?
any supplier you know of ?

From my experience, the dampening effect seems to be related to powdered weight products one. It’s also completely possible this has something to do with the cork used to secure the powder.

I’ve got a few putters with brass tip weights installed and it’s never been an issue. I just assumed the solid material along with the void around the weight (although filled with epoxy) eliminated the problem.

I’ve ordered one from eBay before, they do mention being able to cut with an utility knife to adjust weight

Bumping this

Is adding 10g to the tip weight the same (or close enough, let’s be honest) to a 10g head weight increase via a screw weight to the heel?

I have an old Newport that I’d like to make slightly heavier, but hate lead tape

So.

I finally ended up adding 12g of brass inside the tip of the shaft for “feel” swing-weight in my Studio Stainless 2.5 since I couldn’t add any screws or like the look of led-tape. I really like it!

I do however feel that adding weight by screws or led is a better option since you are also increasing/moving the CG lower to the head compared to adding weight above the ball-strike if that makes sense. I’d go with screws @RCGA if that is an option. I have a NP2 CC as well, with 35g screws in adding that extra weight to toe and heel, and that one is super stable for being a blade.

good luck!
