Accra TZSix/TZFive Driving Iron

mryan0425

Recommended Posts

I just hit my PXG DI on the range with the TZFive 105 M5 shaft (tipped 0.5").  I have mine bent to 22* @ 39" and plays like a strong 4 iron.

Much more usable than the Ventus HB 10TX that I tried...no comparison.

The TZ is not boardy or ultrastiff and has a nice feel.

It is staying put.

Liked it so I have the TZFive Hybrid 95 M5 coming for my 3HY.

I have the TZSix 60 M5 in my Stealth Driver...excellent feeling shaft.

Just had my TZFive 105 M5 shaft (tipped 0.5") installed in my Mizuno Hi Fli 16.5°, I will have a review for you soon. Currently have a Ventus 9x HB blue in my other 2 iron that I will compare it to.F0EBFF84-78DD-488F-8D7D-223847A94140.jpeg.926cfccced57bc0911000cb918245571.jpeg

Had the TZ5 105 in a mizuno pro 3i as well........

Can echo the feel and stability of it.....feels really good!  And will say the finish on these are incredible!  Looks so good.  And at the prices you can get these "driving iron" shafts for, hard to beat the value of them.

I struggled a bit with the weight of it and have a PW 90TX being installed at the moment hoping a little lighter weight may help.  It is a very stable shaft.  I had mine tipped 3/4".  Going to put the 105 in a hybrid head and give it a go as well to see if it combos better with that vs the mizuno.

Any update for this setup? Very interested in the comparison

The combo was very good but not for me. The shaft is extremely stable, but it played way more stout than I thought it would, and 105 was just a bit much it seemed like for me. I would be interested to try the lower gram version. The only comparison I could give it to would be the KBS Proto Hybrid shaft. This definitely does not have your traditional graphite feel and it is not a bad thing.

Thanks. I need a 4 iron shaft for a set of Nike Vapor Pro Combo heads and want to try the TZFive 105 in stiff flex as I have some Accra iSeries steel 105s for the 5-P. Figured the TZFive in the longest iron might blend well.

I think that would be an excellent choice. Let me know your thoughts on it if you decide to go that way. I definitely intend on trying the TZFive again in another driving iron with the M4.

I played the tz5 for a while in a srixon 2 iron. Tipped it 1 inch. Felt nice but being the whore I am, it’s no longer in play. I play C-taper 130 and have a ventus black hb 10-tx in mine now.

Thanks, how did the Ventus and the Accra compare? The TZ5 is supposed to be low-low and firm through the tip. Was that your experience? Same weight, approximately?

Very similar feel in my opinion. Tz5 seemed to be a bit more tip weighted and had a little more feel in the mid section. Numbers were almost identical. Wouldn’t have an issue going back into that shaft at all. And it helps that it looks incredible as well

Sweet. I got it for almost nothing, so will give it a shot. Will match the FX 470 M5+ in my fairway. Several fallbacks if it doesn't work. Thanks!

The KingTitus described above is spot on regarding what appears to be Accra's design approach. Stiff as hell, but not from being super linear from an EI profile standpoint like the Ventus Black for example, but instead having more extreme handle and tip stiffness. The end result is similar lower launching/spinning characteristics, but with a different feel.

Yes. I'm finding that approach seductive. The M5+ I have in 3W (FX 470, tipped 1.5") is stiff enough to go after, but with plenty of feel. And I can work it either way, which is key. I don't mind a softer shaft if it's not wilder. That 3W is becoming one of my favorite clubs. Interesting to come full circle all the way back to Accra, which I had in my DR/3W 20 years ago (SC M5 85 and 95g). Who knew.

Bumping this bad boy, curious if anyone has tried the TZsix and how it compares to the TZfive. I was using a Ventus Black 95X in my 3 iron before it broke and I felt it was perfect. Just don't feel like shelling out the premium for the Ventus again if one of these would be similar.

I would say feel wise, I enjoyed the Ventus but wouldn't mind a little more weight feeling towards the tip like someone mentioned here, but enjoyed the kick of the ventus. I do have a Ventus Blue 9X in a different driving iron which felt more stout to me than the black (could be where the kick point is/stiffness profile?)

If I am getting nit picky on needs, would like a slightly lower launch. I could just downgrade to a 2 iron but trying to go the value route with what I have.

TIA

I haven't hit the Six yet, but curious about it. Update on the Five:

105g ended up being too light for my 3i. I play CT130s down to 4i, so ended up with MMT 125TX in the U500 3i, hard-stepped once. Excellent combo. Nice mid-mid, tight enough.

The TZ5 105 M5 had an interesting feel. Light and firm, I would say, with a slightly sawed-off quality. Hard to describe, and might be more weight than profile that I was feeling.

The Six might be a better fit for me in general, with lower torque and more flex. I'm learning that 'tight' (low torque) is more important than 'firm' (low flex). I like a little give, but not much twist. Anyone hit the Six in an iron yet?

How funny I see this thread today.  I didn't remember seeing it when I was debating buying the TZ6.

Anyway, I posted this, yesterday about it.  90 gram fairway shaft thread here.

Tl;dr:  I like it, but it is hard to load.  I've not tried the VB in hybrid, but the 7X fairway/driver was easier to load than this one.  Stable, I don't find it has a great amount of kick to it, but it does have some.  More than 1k black anyway.  Works great as a hybrid shaft.  Have not used it as a DI, though that's its purpose per Accra.

Have not tried the TZ5.

Dang it, thought I linked to my post with my brief review.  Oh well, text below:

A stouter-feeling shaft, yet with some loading-feel, and quite stable without being boardy, is Accra's TZ6.  I've their driving iron shaft (95 grams or so) in 5-flex and with it, I get a teensy bit of elevation in this 2 hybrid I have cranked down to 15.5°.

Definitely a shaft, IME, that rewards a full effort.  It takes me some effort to load it, but it responds very well when I do.  I like things like 1K Black---both fairway and hybrid in X---original Ventus Black 7X, and fair warning, those shafts I find I don't need to step on to get what I want, as much as I do this one.

Great price too.  I think i paid around 100 or so at Billy Bob's for it.

I might try that TZ5 105 in a 2i head. 7 grams lighter might feel quite a bit tighter and 'heavier.' Small changes in head weight can mean big changes in feel, IME.

I have tested quite a few driving/utility irons along with many different shafts.

The TZ6 95 M4 is currently in a 4 utility iron.  I find it plenty stable with a decent amount of kick.  Feels stable in the handle with a nice, slightly softer feel to the mid section, then stiffens up a little at the tip. You can feel a nice loading sensation in the middle on the backswing to transition with some nice pop into the ball.  The stiffening in the tip seems to keep the head plenty stable enough to never come close to losing control during the swing.

By feel, I would say the TZ6 is mid-stiff at the butt, mid in the midsection and mid-stiff in the tip.  It gives me a nice powerful sensation of the club going through the ball.

I have not hit the TZ5 di, but I  have a 60 M4 in my driver.  If the di is similar profile to the driver, I’d say it’s stiffer in the mid and tip compared to the TZ6. I would imagine that if you have a quick or violent transition, or you like a stiffer feel, you may want to go with the TZ5.

Below I’ll list my thoughts on some other shafts I have tried for comparison sake.

MMT 105s - very nice shaft.  Profile feels similar to the TZ6, but slightly tighter in each zone.  This was the shaft I wanted to work for me.  Profile and stiffness felt perfect, but the swingweight was incredibly heavy.  It was coming out to about 5 or so points heavier than most of the other shafts i tried in the 95-105 weight range.  I tried one of those Boccieri Secret grips with the heavy counter balancing, but the overall club weight was too heavy.  Tried cutting the club down 1/2 inch, but it was still too heavy.  Felt awesome when I got the club head around with a beautiful ball flight.  But too often it was blocks or chunks due to the extremely heavy weighting in the tip of the shaft.

MMT 95s - tried this one after the MMT 105.  Swing weight fell in right in between normal range and the 105.  This one just didn’t feel the same as the 105.  Can’t really explain it, but that coupled with the swingweight issue caused me to move on quickly.

Recoil Dart 105 f4 - swingweight came in at a much more normal weight than the MMT 105.  This one seemed to play pretty stiff to flex.  Not sure if it actually is overly stiff to flex, but just felt hollow compared to the MMT.  The Dart was incredibly accurate, but I just couldn’t get along with the feel.  Found myself overswinging at times with this one.  Wish I could give a better description, but I never could find a bend point or a feel for the profile of the shaft as it just felt overly stiff for a stiff flex to me.  Didn’t go down to the f3 to try out as I had other shafts lying around to try.

AD-DI 95s - A lot of people love this shaft, and for good reason.  It loads easily and gives you a powerful kick through the ball.  My issue was that it felt slightly sloppy or a little too soft in the butt section for me.  The TZ6 feels very similar except for the handle feeling tighter or more controllable for me.  I have heard the AD-DI 105 plays tighter than the DI 95, so that may well work better for me.  I have just not had the chance to try it and don’t foresee myself doing that for a while after finding the TZ6. Only issue I see with this is, if you want more weight than the 95 in the TZ6, you’re out of luck as there is no 105.

KBS Tour Prototype 105 R+ - I got the R+ as I read they play a little stiff to flex and I found this pretty accurate.  The R+ definitely plays like a stiff flex.(another note, the R+ is quite tough to.find in the 105 weight class).  I find this shaft to play most “iron shaft” like out of all of the shafts I tried in this category.  Very stable with a little kick without feeling boardy.  One of my favorite shafts here.  If you are replacing an iron rather than looking for all out distance, this is definitely the model I’d choose.  Very accurate, no big kick in the shaft anywhere that I noticed.  Feels mid-stiff throughout or a more linear profile. I was quite surprised as it is supposedly based off the original KBS Tour iron profile, which I never really liked that much.  Something in the graphite profile is a little different.  I can’t put my finger on it, but I like this one much better.

Throw in- Hzrdus smoke 80 6.5 flex - this shaft was already in on of the heads I bought when doing the testing, so I gave it a shot.  This shaft, to me played like a run of the mill to softer profile stiff flex shaft even though it was x flex.  This is something I could see myself putting in a pure distance club, like a 2 hybrid for the tee, but nothing where I’m relying on any sort of accuracy outside of hitting a fairway.  Very smooth feel to it, though.

in summary, for what I liked: I would lean towards the TZ6 if you are putting it in a low loft or really low spin head.  Should help get the ball off the deck without adding a lot of spin.  If you’re looking to replace an iron and still want something that feels similar to an iron shaft, I’d favor the KBS Prototype.

Bumping this thread to see what everyone has been tipping their TZ5 DI shaft.

I have a 105 M5 set to go into a 22* UT iron at 39.5”

I see some on this thread tipped 0.5” for their 2 irons. I was thinking going 0.75 tip since this is technically a 3 1/2 iron it’s going in.

Any insight / experience with this shaft and tipping would be greatly appreciated!!

Apologies for reviving an old thread but figured I'd pose the question since I find myself in a bit of a dark rabbit hole.

In the market for a driving iron shaft for my Mizuno 24 Fli Hi 3 iron. I have hit the Ventus Blue 9X, which I found a bit loose and lighter than I am accustomed to although not terrible off the tee results. Swapped that out for the Hzrdus 105TX which I am finding launches a bit higher than the Ventus Blue (I am not looking for high) but weight feels better. Have hit the 10TX Ventus Black, felt a little dead to me but not too far off.

As background I currently play the diamana WB in my driver and X7s in my irons. My favorite club shaft combo is my TSI3 3 hybrid with a Tensei Pro White 100TX, which this driving iron is replacing due to an upcoming Scotland trip (if all of my clubs felt like this hybrid, I would be a happy man).

I have hit the TZ Five in the driver and found great results with it but the WB just barely beat it out. Seeing the price of the DI equivalent I am tempted to test it out but am going in blind.

TL;DR - In peoples experience how has the TZ Five 105 M5 compared to the above? (Ventus Black 10TX, Venus Blue 9X, Hzrdus 105TX, Tensei pro white 100TX) Tipping recommendations for 3 iron?

Appreciate any input! Cheers!

Have you tried the pro white in driving iron?

I had my TZ5 105D in a 4 utility iron tipped 1”

definitely didn’t feel lose at all. Maybe a tad light (play modus 130X in irons). Launch was definitely low / mid. Had to work to hit it high.

I agree with the suggestion of tensie pro white 100TX in a driving iron since you already love it in your hybrid (which it’s replacing). On paper that’s a low/low shaft

I have no experience with any Ventus Hybrid and I’ve never enjoyed anything from the Hzrds line so no input there.

Another option would be the KBS proto 105X. Another pretty low launching heavy graphite option.

My last suggestion would be just throw an X7 in it. You play them through irons already and if all you need is to hit low stingers - might be the move

have a blast in Scotland and happy tinkering!

Thanks for the input! I haven't tried it with the pro white as that shaft is very hard to find since it is no longer in production. Will do some more searching and give the Hzrdus another round before pulling trigger.
