It’s kind of Ironic the company is suing him for allegedly ruining his brand and allegedly violating their contract but no one really knew about it until they filed a lawsuit.

If you dig into it you'll find that the lawsuit is not their first effort to force Jack to comply with the contract.

Right. And I meant that they didn't launch the suit out of nowhere.

I do suspect that the recent headlines about Jack's flirtation with LIV Golf might have something to do with the timing.

Yep,, plus Jack made it a point to stress that he turned the offer down tho.....

Maybee his former company would have made a different choice.....

Jack's a bad guy, Tiger's the ultimate sportsman and humanitarian.  Can't make this stuff up.

I'm certainly not saying that Jack is a bad guy I'm just shocked that he sold his company for a measly $145M. I understand that it was right before the great recession of 2008 and Tiger Mania was at it's all time high by then, but you have to remember that Jack, Arnie and Gary were the original media "Whores"......I can't believe that Jack would just bow out of selling his likeness.....but who knows.

I've never understood that argument. Jack and his peers were very wealthy individuals in their day. They may feel less wealthy now when they look at 2022 winner's cheque, but that's inflation for you. Yes, the prize funds have increased in real terms too, but a millionaire golfer who plied his trade in the 60s moaning that they were ripped off by life? I'm not buying it. If you were a top player in the 60s and 70s, you did alright.

Aside from purses going mad, we live in a world where scientists with PhDs and years of post doc work in cancer research earn less per hour than the plumber who comes to fix my ailing toilet, and 'influencers' become millionaires by regularly posting utterly vacuous guff on social media. Life, like golf, evidently isn't supposed to be fair.

For sure. And golf course designers now probably look back at how many courses Jack put his name on and realize they'll never be able to come close because Jack was on top of that game when the golf boom was going on. That's just how it works.

Being that it was 2007 and Jack was coming off a string of bad business moves, $145M probably sounded like "I am set for life" kind of money and he just grabbed it.

No one is safe from the media sharks.  Not saying Jack should be safe, but acknowledging he's an icon to many and seemingly would be hands off on such a trivial non-news lawsuit, but...he did write that stupid multi-page tweet in the last election, did start talking how he turned down Saudis, so guess what...you are now a target.  But I don't know if Jack can even be "cancelled".  Does anyone really care about Jack other than boomers and older?

The lawsuit is just a tool, and not one you use lightly, it's expensive and time consuming, but if the other party will not come to the table or is being totally unreasonable, and you might need some injunctive relief, then it is just a step you have to take to get the conversation moving again and give it a little time urgency.

Jack won't be coughing up big bucks, I wonder if he even has any, but somehow we will have to get to the table and give in a bit, but being that old, stubborn, entitled geezer that he is, he will just keep doing what he's doing.

It is hard to remember how far things have come in pro sports income. JN told a story about how he had already won the career 4 majors, was top of the money list multiple times and got rejected for a home loan by his banker in Ohio in the late 60's.  Nolan Ryan pumped gas in the off season early in his career and was the only guy I heard thank the player's union representative at his HOF induction (Marvin ?) for making him the first million dollar baseball pitcher.  Jerry Kramer made about the same money as a teacher in Green Bay when he played in the Ice Bowl.
Inflation always affects perspective but there is no question pro sports as a business has way outstripped most other employment at the top levels of the game.

Jack, for all his acumen never had the same golden touch that Arnie had when it came to endorsement income. Then this LIV deal appears on his doorstep in his 80's.  It must be tough to have someone who felt he was underpaid for his efforts all those years ago be offered this kind of money and not consider it.  What could go wrong?

For the last 15-20 years, Jack always seemed bitter about the amounts of money being paid to tour players.  He would comment about how guys earn in one year what took him an entire career.   I'm wondering if that led to his behavior?

He wants his piece of it - for him.

But I'm willing to bet the majority of people will give Jack the grandpa pass instead of excoriating him like they did to FIGJAM

I mean he'll likely die before he can spend it all though right? Do 80+ year olds buy planes and fast cars? Generational wealth for his family I suppose.

Regardless of where it all ends, I'm chuckling at the irony that the non-accusation accusation against Jack (i.e., there is no claim for any damages made about the LIV stuff, it's just "PR" tossed in and did get all the media clucking over it) is that in whatever communications there were between him and any Saudis, that he was allegedly interfering with the Plainitff's Saudi deals.  Seems to be lost on those in media writing some over the top headlines (and not surprising).

In your experience.

For nearly 10 years, I served as the corporate representative for legal action taken against our company.  I was the guy to answer endless interrogatories and was deposed on countless occasions for hours at a clip.  I grew to appreciate our corporate counsel for what they did and how they protected our firm from baseless lawsuits.  Lawyers are looked at negatively because they need to follow procedures they didn't create.  And in following procedure to protect clients their behavior makes them appear as dirt bags.  I get it.

So basically you are saying that your company's lawyers were good and defended your company against the bad lawyers from other companies.  So are the judges (also lawyers) that allowed the baseless suits to continue good or bad?  What about when your company's lawyers filed baseless suits against other companies?  Were they good lawyers at that point or bad lawyers?

No.  They defended us against the lawsuits that had no merit or that included us simply because we had the deepest pockets.

Not good or bad.  I believe most corporate lawsuits have merit if they make it to court.

In 10 years, I only went to court twice.

What about when your company's lawyers filed baseless suits against other companies?

I can't answer this one, as I wasn't on the legal team that filed suits.  They only brought me in when someone filed against us.

Were they good lawyers at that point or bad lawyers?

I do know when we were in the wrong they settled quickly.

You need a lawyer to figure out what companies are what.  From my rudimentary research, it seems Nicklaus Companies is owned by 8AM Golf.  And Nicklaus Companies owns Miura and Golf magazine and some other golf related companies.  There is no shortage of pictures of Jack on the Nicklaus Companies webpage and how great he is or any attempt to distance themselves from their eponym.
