Golfers have been suckers for "branding" and identification with players and what they play since some chop probably asked Tom Morris to make him a ball just like he played, lol.  You recall the successful empire built by Arnold Palmer?  If not, watch the documentary - those of us not quite old enough to remember his absolute heyday with marketing, still remember those Pennzoil commercials. More so in the current era - "what were those shoelaces in JT's FJs?",  "what time to I have to log in to pay $$$$$ for a Tiger Frank shirt", "what were those buttons made of on Harry Higgs' trousers - I was only looking for fashion reasons!"

Mr Palmer was a marketing genius and with his persona of a champion of the working man it all fell into place. And I have seen some great clubs with his signature on them then I have seen some junk too. But hey American Capitalism at it's finest. I do not fault him one bit for making a buck when available.

One thing I’ll bet @BIG STU and others will agree on is that Jack made some nice butter knives.

Yep Macgregor made some nice butter knives and that is what Jack played. I am not sure when those were made if Jack was a partial owner of the company or not--- Sharp eye my friend you saw on my signature I am playing a set front line

I wouldn't buy them because I have a specific ball I like to play, but a bit of a disagreement my friend . . .

Nicklaus marketed those balls as balls to play from "your" tees, both an effort to market the balls by skill level and an effort to suggest appropriate tees be played as well - it didn't really work, but it was a little outside the box and he should get credit for at least trying it even if it wasn't the best idea.

In general, he's always complained about the ball going too far but he's not going to sell balatas and old style blades if he is in the equipment business and I don't see a "moral" obligation to do so.  If the ball was "rolled back" I'm sure he'd be among the first to embrace it, wouldn't fight it, etc.  -- probably a lot of the Nicklaus "whites" in the warehouse! 😉

I'll stay out of the distance "debate" in general, however, those arguments don't seem to go well. 😀

I honestly never saw even one of those balls in the flesh so to speak--- And me living in a golf Tourist Mecca you would have thought I would have found at least one. LOL maybe better players played them that did not lose them (shrug) Yep I do not get into the distance debate. At 64 with a bad back I need all the help I can get. But seriously I watch golf on TV and it does not matter to me how far they hit the ball now. Ya still have to get it into the hole in as few of strokes as possible

You are now aware that there is a particular ice cream company. You might not remember the name of said company but if you're in a store looking around for ice cream and there're 100 options of ice cream; you may very well be "Oh, I know that one there - it's the one with the terribly Photoshopped photo of Jack Nicklaus - who I know because I am a fan of golf - holding it."

That brand stands out just a bit more. The campaign has now succeeded.

As I've said many times; endorsements are not "Buy this thing because this famous person likes it." It's "I know this is a thing that exists because I saw it once with a famous person I am aware of."

You don't know that ice cream. But you know Jack Nicklaus.

This is why endorsements are worth so much. It's leveraging a known quantity. I couldn't tell you the first thing about the tub of chocolate ice cream in my freezer right now. All I know is that it's chocolate and it's delicious. But if you ask me right now "Hey aenemated, I hear you have delicious chocolate ice cream. What is it?" my answer would be "I dunno dude, it's chocolate ice cream."

But if it were, in fact, the chocolate ice cream that Jack is hocking, I'd be like "Oh, it's Jack Nicklaus' chocolate ice cream!"

Of the bazillion ice creams in the world; I was able to identify that one for you. And because we're fans of golf; you got it and you remembered it.

Funny. I see ice cream from a pro golfer I’m gonna assume he doesn’t know as much about ice cream as Ben or Jerry and steer clear! 😂 But then again, I am a golf fan. Far too sophisticated to fall for this marketing hokus pokus than say a basketball fan as @BottleCap said. Whatever the heck that is supposed to mean. 🙄

It has been well documented that the "Tourney" balls he used were actually rebadged Titleist. And then there was the deal where his company was selling those "Golden Bear" balls with different colored emblems for the different compressions all the time he was clamoring for a roll back of the ball. I mean seriously would you buy a ball from a man clamoring to roll back the ball?

I read many times over the years that what you stated here was not the case. The Tourney ball was notorious for being inconsistent, flying short, being out of round, and generally being one of the worst balls on the market. I found this Golfweek piece from 2009 that supports my statement:

https://golfweek.usatoday.com/2009/11/25/looking-back-macgregors-golf-balls/

This article about MacGregor's demise in 2009 has more about the relationship between it and Jack:
