I think the only time I have really been influenced by an athlete's endorsement was when Wayne Gretzky had Pro-Stars cereal on the shelves here in Canada.  Of course, I was about 7 at the time.

Good on the athletes for making the money, but for me personally it appears to be a waste of a company's resources.  But then again we live an age where the daggers come out when someone like my wife says chasing "likes" and all that crap on the book of face and elsewhere is a huge waste of time and money.  Don't you dare tell them you are only drawing in people looking for free stuff that won't spend any money with your company.

You mean that you know of, yes ?

I find it hard to believe that an industry that generates over a quarter of a TRILLION dollars (est.) annually does nothing to influence sales of products and services.

This summarizes Jacks roller coaster business career.

To his credit he seems to have always buckled down and turned bad situations around

Yo, the new Top Gun movie is dope!

The audience even cheering. Crazy flying “I got tone!” and good cheesy homages to first movie.

Was kind of sad when Maverick died.

🤣

Just kidding ; )

And chick who play Phoenix is totally fly!

Thanks for the link -  and the movie review.

Had no idea Jack had so many business woes. I did see a story about lawsuits from homeowners in the Bear's Club development. But that's another saga ....

It has been well documented that the "Tourney" balls he used were actually rebadged Titleist. And then there was the deal where his company was selling those "Golden Bear" balls with different colored emblems for the different compressions all the time he was clamoring for a roll back of the ball. I mean seriously would you buy a ball from a man clamoring to roll back the ball?

Googled it for you (Google search syntax = copied here).

Linked below (mentioned in a post by @NRJyzr, circa Sept 2014)

[/quote]

I've posted this before, but the retired MacGregor rep whom I referenced earlier in this thread claimed to have seen, with his own eyes, balls in the Titleist factory being stamped "MacGregor," and was told they were for one Jack Nicklaus.

You may take that FWIW, but many of his comments to me from assorted discussions were corroborated by others, so I have no real reason to doubt him on this one.

Wouldn't be the first time pros used something other than what the item appeared to be (cough Cobra Norman Signature Grinds cough)

Should make a distinction.  If I don't know a product exists, then of course there would be an influence.  But for me, I don't wear Nike/Footjoy/adidas/whatever because a certain athlete endorses them.  I wear what suits my purposes best.

I just really haven't been swayed by athletes all that much in my adult life to purchase products.  Obviously some are, but given I also have the view that no man should want another man's signature on something that isn't a contract or a check, or that wearing a shirt with another man's name on it is questionable, I'm likely in a small minority.

Advertising and endorsements can impact us in a lot of subtle and non-obvious ways, like influencing the amount we’re willing to pay for one brand over another.

If Callaway didn’t have any professional endorsers it would be Maltby.

"I saw it on the Internet, so it must be true".

It isn't true though.

I posted the link earlier but here it is again:

https://golfweek.usatoday.com/2009/11/25/looking-back-macgregors-golf-balls/

In that article it states that in the '70s Jack threatened MacGregor Golf management with him switching to the Titleist ball if they didn't get their act together.

I suppose the only part of your account that might be true is that either they or Jack himself made arrangements with Titleist for some number of non-logoed Titleists to be stamped with his name. But that is several layers of hearsay deep. Back then MacGregor had a ball plant making millions of lousy golf balls a year.

When Arnold Palmer made the handshake deal with Mark McCormick to manage his brand and endorsements, it was a brilliant decision. Nicklaus decided to go it alone, with ups and downs and some struggles.

I get the feeling that Nicklaus has always wanted to single-handedly control everything he touches and around him, but maybe he was’t the best guy for the job.

I honestly never saw even one of those balls in the flesh so to speak--- And me living in a golf Tourist Mecca you would have thought I would have found at least one. LOL maybe better players played them that did not lose them (shrug) Yep I do not get into the distance debate. At 64 with a bad back I need all the help I can get. But seriously I watch golf on TV and it does not matter to me how far they hit the ball now. Ya still have to get it into the hole in as few of strokes as possible

If I’m not mistaken Stu, those balls were only available by mail order, not off the shelf. So I really doubt too many of them got sold and actually played. Probably only die hardJack fans ordered any( yes, I did, and quite frankly,I didn’t think they were very good). I believe a portion of the sale price in each purchase was also a charitable contribution, the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital maybe?

And it’s been a long time, I could be remembering every single thing completely wrong… it wouldnt be the first time.

Well said.  I’m not the guy you can sell a jersey too.  I gave up baseball cards before grade school was out.  I’ve tried a few clubs or shoes because I saw them on TV. But they absolutely need to perform or they don’t stay long at all. Especially shoes.  Ecco and footjoy make the cut.  And they’re the least flashy shoes made.  But my feet thank me.

I see this as well in my line of business.  Car shows on TV breed some of the dumbest fads I’ve ever seen. Particularly in wheel choice or paint schemes.  I can name a wheel company that was getting $4500 a set 5/6 years ago.  You can’t sell that same set for $1200 new now.  All because of a guys name on them.  Absolutely remedial.

I learned this a few years back being in the wrecker business and being around tire store people. Those companies will make a few limited sets of say like 22 24 inch wheels then discontinue the line so when a guy cracks a wheel they can not match it and they have to buy 4 new ones. There was a guy in Dirty Myrtle a few years back that was buying like remaining wheels cheap and selling spares or odds cheap. And he was buying them cheap too. If they sat for a while he scrapped them and got like $35 per wheel scrap.

Aint like the old days a Cragar mag you bought in the 70s is pretty much the same today only more expensive

Yes, I saw that.  The evidence is that someone talked to someone who was in the Titleist ball plant years ago who swore he saw some balls there with Jack’s name on them. I addressed how that might be in my reply. As for MacGregor balls being only available by mail order, I have never heard of that. When I began playing golf in the ‘80s I would occasionally find a Mac ball in the weeds when looking for an errant shot, too many for a mail order item.

Jack was stuck with the MacGregor ball for years and years because it was a provision of his contract (which goes to the point that he could have used some help in such matters) and was perpetually unhappy with it. As the link I posted notes, many pros in similar situations played the required ball off the first tee to deceive the Darrell Report auditor recording such info then switched to their preferred brand on the next hole.  I also remember Jack playing a Maxfli in the latter stages of his career as someone else noted, though that might have been after he left MacGregor.
