Switching from Vokey to Zipcore help….

Ryan19jwu

Recommended Posts

I was fitted at Titleist HQ 2 years ago and have been playing SM8 for 2 full seasons. I’d like to switch to the RTX Zipcore when I buy new wedges but I’m not sure which grinds I should be switching to ensure a similar grind/bounce/etc.

There is nothing crazy going on, just don’t know how they compare with grinds or if I should be doing any of the custom grinds to make them similar.

I know the obvious answer is stay with Vokey, but I get a heavy Srixon discount.

Current specs:

50.08 F

54.10 S

60.08 M

appreciate any help!

Thanks!

I’d go mid in your 50 and 54, then check out either the low 60 or full face 60. Sole grind on full face is closer to Vokey M, but you might not like the grooves going all the way across.  I suppose you could also get a 58 Low bent 2° weak, that would get you exactly 8° bounce on a pretty versatile sole grind.

I agree with the post above. Mid grinds for the 50° & 54° and low for the 60°.

I had the exact same Vokey wedges as you. With the RTX wedges I went mid on all of them, 50, 54 and 58 (bent to 59). I’ve liked this combo much better.

I went from sm8 to Zipcore and I love them!  Agree with post above about mid in 50 & 54.  I also have 60 full face and it’s incredible!

I went with the tour racks so my builder could grind them for me.  Went full in the 56 and had leading edge ground and shaved the heel.  Some of the best wedges I’ve played in a long time!

This is my second season with them.  Had an indoor session 2 weeks ago and was still getting over 10k spin on full shots with the 56.  They wear very well and feel similar to a forged iron on center contact.

How is the full face out of the sand?

For me the sole on a Mid grind RTX Zipcore 50 or 54, coming from 50 and 54 F-grind SM7's, played noticeably thinner/faster/skinnier/sharper/whatever term you want to use for less effective bounce on the Cleveland. I think the Full sole on RTX Zipcore is only very slightly "fuller" than Vokey's F-grind and Mid is going to get into the turf more and cut through it more easily.

I do not think there's a good one-for-one correspondence between Vokey and RTX Zipcore grinds. Compared to the Vokeys I'd used off and on for decades, I had to adjust my swing and just let those Mid grinds leave a significant divot. With the Vokeys I typically dented the ground slightly without removing much turf (I'm talking about Bermuda fairways). That said, once I learned to relax and just let them cut through the turf I liked them fine.

My go-to loft in bunkers is usually an open face 54-degrees. Sort of like from the fairway, I found a Mid grind 54 to be noticeably faster through the sand than an F-grind Vokey.

Agree with this. I was going to order a set of Tour Rack Zipcores but with the ground leading edge because I don't like the way they interact with the ground compared to Vokey. We have a weird season where I am with extremely soggy spring and fall and mega firm summer. The Zipcores had noticeably more greenside spin when chipping weirdly. I'm using an RTX4 raw 46 and love it though.

What are your bounces in 50 and 54?

I have traditionally played 50 8 bounce bent to 51 but moving to 12 in the 50 for the time being. Right at 50. The 46 I play has 8 and I play a 54S 10 bounce bent to 55 (so 11 effective).

Thanks. We have the same setup. But I’m trying the 50 mid and 54 and 58 full face so we’ll see it’s they stick. Also play the zx7 so I’m hoping the feel translates

I only play the 60 full face out of the sand if I absolutely have to.  If I short side myself or need to get the ball up quick.  It’s awesome on these tight lies in Dallas though.

Mainly play the 56 full.  With the heel shaved down and leading edge taking off it’s much easier to open it up without feeling I’m going to blade it.  It works wonders out of the sand.
