Golf Near NOLA ± 2 Hours / Food in NOLA All Welcome

L3fty

Recommended Posts

I'll be down in NOLA this summer.

-GOLF-

I know the golf isn't the best. Probably will take advantage of the military discount at TPC Louisiana most of the time.

Did some research and found these (mostly East of NOLA) and will probably play each while I'm there.

Fallen Oak GC

Grand Bear

The Preserve

Shell Landing

Let me know if there's anything I'm missing. Willing to travel around 2 hours each way if the golf is worth it.

I did the RTJ Trails while I was in FL.

I'll also be checking out Bebu golf (thanks for the reviews WRX) to get a new driver. Can't wait to check it out and finally change out my OG M1.

-FOOD-

Looking forward to this and the suggestions a lot.

I'll eat anything so all recs are welcome.

Will be going back to

Harbor seafood and Oyster bar

Peche

Restaurant Rebirth

Parkways

Thanks in advance!

Jr.

Edit- I have been following @Argonne69 epic travel journey. Cheers!

Are you going to be there for an extended period of time? If so, all four of those courses you mentioned are worth playing if you really don't mind spending 3-4 hours in the car to get there and back. That's not really something I would do, but to each their own. I'm not sure if things have changed, but last time I played Fallen Oak you had to be a guest of the hotel (Beau Rivage) to book a tee time.

If you're only going to be in New Orleans for a short time my advice would be to enjoy the city and the food instead of playing golf.

http://frankieandjohnnys.net/ is great for all the traditional NOLA fare. Reasonable prices too. They close sort of early IIRC, maybe 9pm? It's a neighborhood joint.

The Ponchartrain Hotel has a fantastic rooftop bar. https://www.nola.com/entertainment_life/article_7cd3702e-1de1-56ba-a37a-75a9b026c4bf.html

We always hit Felix's in the French Quarter. https://www.felixs.com/

Food - just a few of our favorites:
The Joint BBQ (I like The Joint BBQ better than Blue Oak, but not by much)

Blue Oak BBQ (GREAT bourbon selection the last time I was there)
GW Finns (there is a reason Finns is always ranked #1 on TripAdvisor)

Adolfo's (on Frenchman's street - has maybe 10 tables - get a reservation - probably the best meal I've had in NOLA in 12 years of visiting there)
Domenica (if you get the urge for pizza or a great happy hour)
How could I forget Coop's Place (if you like really good fried chicken & Cajun food, and don't mind getting mistreated by your server :))

I've always thought about taking my clubs down to NOLA with me, but it hasn't been worth the effort with the short time we are there on our trips.  Since you are down all summer, take them, drive away from NOLA to play, and take in all of the beautiful country around the delta.

That's the one.  Upstairs above the Apple Barrel Bar.

Played TPC Friday & Saturday. They just aerated the course so the greens were super sandy and bumpy. Surprised they would do that before Father’s Day weekend. Only played here twice because of the military discount @ $64
Just got back from playing Grand Bear and it was so much more fun than TPC. A lot of different varieties of shots required and the scenery is just a lot better.

so far, ate at Harbor seafood and Oyster Bar and this place is flat out good. Not a real popular touristy place but it solidified that I’ll be here whenever I come to NOLA.

Ate ramen at Gyu-Kaku (this is a yakiniku place) it was terrible. Someone suggested Nomiya for ramen.

Had po boy and crawfish at Crawlings and it was pretty good. Supposedly a new spot that’s gaining some love. It was close to where I’m staying and it was above average.

I’ll continue to update here on my stay here in NOLA.

Hi All, I read L3fty's post and your replies with great interest.  The good lady and I will flying over from the UK to be in NOLA at the end of Sep/early Oct, as part of her Dallas/NOLA 60th birthday treat.  However, wherever I go in the world, the clubs go too.  I have a round planned at Old American on the outskirts of Dallas, but would love to get a round while down in NOLA.  Originally I was thinking of TPC, but whilst I don't doubt it will be in pristine condition, it doesn't sound particularly interesting or challenging.  I was wondering about English Turn, which I remember watching on TV when they had a few PGA Tour events there back in the early 2000s.  It struck me as a place where you needed to think your way around as well.  My only problem is that we will be based in the French Quarter, so won't have a car, and therefore need to pick a course I can get to by taxi, without costing an absolute arm and leg.  Any thoughts for this old Brit?  Not too worried about the cost, it's more about the quality and challenge of the course.  Appreciate any advice.  Colin

English Turn is not the same course it was when it used to host the Tour event. Last I heard conditions were spotty at best, and I think the majority of people would say it's not worth the trip out there.

Check out this recent thread for more info on New Orleans golf. Honestly, if you're going through the trouble of bringing you clubs you might as well play TPC. It's really the only course remotely close to the city that is worth playing in my opinion.

Personally I think you would enjoy Audubon Park. Very reasonable and convenient.
