Anyone been up there recently and can report on conditions at Torreon, Bison, Silver Creek, Pinetop CC, or Pinetop Lakes?  Thanks!

Torreon was in really good shape except the greens were slower than usual because they had not been rolled yet.  They were scheduled to start rolling last week.  So by now, they are at the normal 12ish.

Thank you. I am playing there next week for the first time.   I am excited to check it out.

It's been super windy, making it tougher than usual. Hope you have a morning tee time - The winds are supposed to be even higher next week. 

 

I may go next week too - haven't decided.  Current plan is to go fishing and may take the clubs to play while up there.

Played Silvercreek last friday.  It was in typical shape (pretty good).  Greens were rolling about 11-12.  I caught it on a non wind day 9:30 tee time.  It was one of the most enjoyable rounds I have played this year, highlighted by having four 2's in a row on 12, 13, 14, 15.  Driver and a one putt from 20 feet on 12, and a hole out 60 wedge on 14.  My drive on 14 caught something (possibly a sprinkler??) in the fairway and shot forward for an extra 70-100 yards at least.  I dont ever remember have two 2's in a row.  Once in a lifetime for sure.

Wow! What run of holes!! I don't think I've ever head of that, pro or amateur. I absolutely love Silvercreek, one of my favorite courses in the White Mountains including all the privates, and possibly my favorite Panks design.

Played Torreon (Cabin and Tower), Pinetop Lakes CC, and Pinetop CC last week.  Here is a brief rundown:

 

Torreon:  This was my first time playing either course.   Very satisfied with 36 here. We played Tower in the morning and Cabin in the afternoon.  The greens were very consistent on both courses. I'd guess around 10 or 11 on the stimp.  Consistent grass on greens although some poa was coming through but didn't effect playability.  

 

Tower was a little wet in the fairways which caused some mudballs.  The daytime high was around 88 degrees so I guess they were concerned about the heat.  Tower has some interesting holes, but I didn't like that it took driver out of your hand in places.  My least favorite hole of the whole trip was 18 on Tower which is a shortish par 4 where you have to hit 7 iron off the tee and then something like 9 iron to the green.  Weird hole.

 

Cabin was firmer condition and better overall layout.  After about 25 holes, things started to meld together, but there were some nice risk-reward holes on this course, but nothing too tricked up.  I would probably play Cabin 7/10 times but would be equally satisfied playing either again.  Pace of play was fine on both courses but that's a given for a mid-week round on a private course.

 

Pinetop Lakes: These were the best greens I have putted in a while.  Very pure bent grass that were firm but held shots.  My second time playing the course.  It is fun but starts to replicate itself by about the 14th or 15th holes.   No bunkers on the course.  Two short par 5, several short par 4's, and the rest 3's.  This conditions were great all around, although I receive a pre-round warning that they just put a new pumphouse in so it might appear brown.  Coming from Phoenix, it looked lush to me.  $61 to walk in the morning.  Not a course to travel to, but a definite add on to a trip to PT.

 

Pinetop CC: First time here as well.  The course was just what I expected.  Pine treed lined fairways which were tight, but not too tight.  If you happened to hit it in the trees, you most likely could chip out.  Greens were fairly quick with some decent back to front slope.  Just a solid, northern Arizona country club.  They are almost full on memberships, and charge $18,000 to join plus $590 per month.  

 

I enjoy going up to Pinetop to get out of the heat and play some golf.  I found the elevation changes made at least a club different, and you actually got fliers out of the rough which doesn't happen most places on the Valley.  It's an easy 3 hour drive and definitely worth looking into if you want a quick trip out of the heat.
