Your Largest "Skin"?

Was fortunate to make a long eagle putt yesterday during the practice round for "The Grizzly" member-guest at Bear Creek in Murrieta, California. Hole 9, par 5. About 510 yards from where we played it. Front-center pin, tucked just over a bunker. Very tough to get to in two.

 

Hole was playing downwind about 15 - 20 mph. I hit a good drive (for me) that left me 245 to the pin. I hit a low, running 4-wood that chased up to the green, leaving me about a 50' putt that broke about 6 feet. Drained it.

 

There were exactly 100 players in the skins game at $40 each for "half-stroke" skins. My gross eagle held up as one of four skins, each worth $1,000. Sweeeet!!!

 

That's my second-largest ever. Had a $2,200 one years ago in a similar game where I was one of two.

My biggest is about $150, but I don't play in events that have big skins money very often. I did see a guy slam dunk one from about 140 in the golf week amateur tour finals, he was one of two skins that day and he got $1,200.

I had one for $2400.00 for the entire skins pool. Holed out a pitch from about 30yrds during our Thursday night weekend warmup we called "The Rat Pack". Everything else squashed that night, except for my Eagle.

Not mine but the biggest I ever witnessed in person was $30,000. The loser was drunk and unhappy lol. He then proceeded to drive his cart into a tree.

Single skin i think like 300$ ....I birdied the hardest hole on the course and there were a lot of holes cancelled out. Me and one other dude split a decent pot.

I had a short putt (4 feet or less) for a skin worth over $400…….I didn’t even scare the hole.

My largest was about $1200 in a never guest.

Had one for around $40 once. It was tough getting a skin when the #1 amateur in your state was a member and played in all the weekly money games.

Like $60 considering it was with 2 other guys for $5/hole it's not bad I guess. A skins league would be fun.

Congrats. Could you elaborate how this game works? Each contestant puts up 40$? And gets awarded/divided based on what? Were you the only player to make an eagle and was the 1k supposed to be divided among players who made eagles? If so, what were the other skins?

104 players in the game. $40 each. Everyone is assigned their handicap for the tees the play. I was a zero, so I get zero strokes. A 9 would get 1/2 stroke all all nine of his stroke holes.

 

Skins are any hole that is not "capped." My eagle was the only "3" on number nine.

 

There were three other holes that held up: A 1.5 on a par 3 and two 2.5's on par 4's.

 

So four skins total for a total of $1,040 each.

$6,000.00. It was a team scramble. So I only got $1500, despite every shot on the hole being mine. (That seldom happens to me).

Had a super skin at my Florida course in Feb … 3 hundo USD.  

 

in our weekly money games … 16 guys x 60 bucks with 1/3 for skins … you get $150 from the $320 skins pot and you had a good day

Our mens night occasionally gets about 100 guys and on those days lots of birdies and better happen. Typically its 40-60 regulars.

 

I did hit on one skin on a tough par 4 last year and nailed just under 300 bucks which was my biggest. This year 120 is the most I've gotten on a skin.

Yeah, another way we say it is gross trumps net.  So a gross 3 beats a net 3.

I think it was $200 or so in a 4 day tournament in Las Vegas. It was a full field with skins paid out each day and there was no pressure on the hole. Made a random birdie and for some reason no one else did. Now, if i had been aware that making the 12 foot putt would win that cash I guarantee it wouldn't have gone in.

$150 for my birdie on #10 in the end of the year dogfight.  What was weird at the time is that I dismissed the birdie thinking I had no shot at a skin, because half a dozen guys (in a field of about 60) would typically birdie that hole, but no one else birdied the hole that day.  The best part about this skin is that it cost me nothing to win, as the end of the year dogfight takes the extra dollar from all other dogfights over the course of the year, and combines it into the purse for that one round.

 

That round was weird as well in that there were only two other skins.  Someone eagled the toughest par 5, and someone birdied one of the other par 5s.  But that birdie on that par 5 was actually a hole out from around the green, to a pin that was borderline cruel, as it was on the very right side of the green, right at the precipice of a slope that broke off left if you aimed at the hole, and broke right if you tried to die the ball into the hole from the right.  I've putted to some impossible pin locations before, but I think they intentionally set the pin there just to piss everyone off, and make sure no one actually had a shot at birdie at that hole that day.  Turns out that one guy had dumb luck with the hole out and it was worth $150.

Never heard of that, but that's a really, REALLY cool way of doing it. Where someone that actually makes the score wins over someone that got one worse, but was getting a stroke. Was that because of the large field (i.e., there may not be any skins to pay out with all the ties)? Probably wouldn't work with a smaller, 40-50 person field... as the number of skins paid out would be larger.

Most I got was about $80 on one skin. I've had a few rounds where I've won multiple skins adding up to more, but on their own, maybe $40/$50 ea.

Last hole member guest par 5, I hit it to a foot and half to win a team skin of $800, plus we sealed up gross.

Definitely works with smaller fields. Have been doing it for 30 years at Bear Creek in the Friday and Saturday games. Always produces a nice mix of gross and net players who cash a skin. 🙂

Thanks. To me, that would pay out more skins, at a smaller payout per. But to many, the reward should be/is fewer skins, more payout per. Six to one, half dozen to another. 😉

$80 split four ways in a sponsored scramble. Par 4, 320 yards slightly downhill.  Drove the green to 20 feet of the hole and made the putt after letting the other three guys drive and putt in turn.  Only skin and my best eagle ever.
