Are you too lazy to look it up yourself?

This is just me venting, and what I see pretty much on any forum, anywhere.  But it's almost like people are trolling when they ask some of their questions.

 

Just as an example, someone asked about a certain player as an alternate into a tournament and could someone tell them where that player was on the alternates list.

 

My first thought in response to this was, "Are you too lazy to go look it up yourself, or are you just trolling to see if there actually is someone STUPID enough to actually do it for you?"

 

Why do people do this?  With Google, and YouTube, and a thousand other internet resources, are you simply too lazy to go look whatever it is you are asking up yourself?  I've ventured from topic to topic and post to post, and it's rinse, wash, repeat all over the place.  It's like there's two types of people out there.  A) Those that are too lazy to do anything for themselves and need someone else to do it for them, and B) the helpers out there, who do all the work, and respond to the lazy person's inquiry, and bail them out by answering their question.

 

So far I've refrained from even responding to such stupidity and laziness, but after so many years of being on internet message boards I think I just had this epiphany and I refuse to get sucked into answering any question that can be answered with a quick 5 minute search on the internet.

 

So in short, go look it up yourself and stop being so DAMN LAZY!!!

Haha. I usually refrain from the “is your Google broken” response. Notice I said usually 😜 The last time I responded I said. “Hold on, I’ll go Google it for you.”  Of course I didn’t actually do it because I’m not “STUPID enough”. 😂

Sometimes asking a question is an invitation to start a conversation.

The decline of forums as a whole has been ushered in by the Facebookification and Redditification of social media.  Used to be that specialized hobby forums (like this) were populated by folks who were excellent and passionate about their given hobbies.  Some of the best information on the whole Internet was buried in the annals of specialized forums - I'm thinking specifically of an engine swap guide for a Dodge Intrepid (though there are hundreds of other automotive examples).  There was a slight barrier to entry here - the person seeking the information had to put effort into finding the discussion forums, so that weeded out the idiots.

 

Enter...oh, about 2010.  Facebook and Reddit hit the mainstream.  Neither site indexes search information like a forum does.  That is, both FB and Reddit (broadly speaking) index and show information based on interaction.  Forums like this index things chronologically.  When FB and Reddit posts die, they fall off the main webpage.  When forum posts die, they still stay active, but just hidden and are able to be "bumped" and resurrected from years past.  As Facebook hit a billion users and Reddit moved into top 10 websites, folks got used to just asking a question even if it had been asked 1,000 times before instead of having to put that little bit of effort into finding a post from last year.

 

Respect newbies; remember that we were all newbs once.  Don't feed the trolls.  Ask yourself "is it worth my time to make this post," and "will this post help the community at large?".

In my day these discussions usually happened on the golf course. Without the cover of the internet and the fact that the discusser and discussee were right in front of each other, people had a tendency to be more polite unless alcohol was involved. 🙂

The BST forum would be interesting. WITB could work literally when referring to fastfood places.  The Equipment forum could be used to discuss different buns and toppings along with a  "condiments" section and a "accompanying beverages" section.  The possibilities are endless...just like the fries at Red Robin.
