Who did you get paired up with today?

Recommended Posts

Got paired up with a guy in his 70s.

Wiry athletic guy who started golfing last year.

He carried his own bag for the 18 holes.

Played 150 rounds last summer.  Already at 50 rounds in 2022.

He broke 90 a few times already.

Totally obsessed.

Very inspiring sort of fellow and was a great guy to play with.

Who did you get paired up with today?   Can be good or bad story

Wife and I, both early 50's were paired up with a 19 year old and his non playing girlfriend, both with nose rings.  Both very nice and and polite, he had great golf manners, so someone taught him well.  OK player, beginner, I'm guessing.  Hit it long, but was spraying it all over the place.

After 9 he says nice meeting you, bye, etc.  On the 12 hole we notice he and GF are on the hole behind us, guess he didn't want to play with us old people.

Got paired with a beginner who was surprisingly good (apparently took lessons all through last summer and in a sim over the winter).

It seemed no one tought him golf etiquette tough.

He kept moving around and making noise when we were chipping and putting, walking over our lines, and the most annoying: putting out of turn on almost every hole.

Also often wanted to 'finish hit'. I understand when it's a tap in or very short putt, but he was a slow player and would walk to his ball to make his 5' then stand over it 30 seconds, wtf?

Another guy got fed up and told him to wait his turn, but somehow I guess he couldn't tell when his ball was 10' from the hole and someone else's was 15'.

Got paired with two ladies, a 14y.o. and a 19 y.o. They were both hyper competitive, sniping at each other after each hole, blaming the other for everything from "rushing me",  "put the cart too close to my ball",  to "crunching chips in my backswing." The 19 y.o. switched carts into mine after 3 holes, saying "I can't play with her anymore, she is just too much". Then on holes 11-12 the 14 y.o. left us behind while she played ahead "you guys are so slow", having to re-join when she got stuck behind a couple groups. It was a highly stressful round, made more difficult by the fastest greens any of us have played on this year.

The 14 y.o. shot a 79 claiming that the "greens here are so stupid", while the 19.y.o. and I both shot 90. I was completely frazzled by the end of the round, actually by about hole 12 I realized that I had completely forgotten that golf was supposed to be fun and had given up on all pretense of shooting a good score.

Just another nice father's day round with 2 of my 3 daughters.

That is so money 😂 good one ! lol

I got paired with a couple of young men from Odessa, TX.  They made the two hour drive up just to play my home course. (The Rawls Course at Texas Tech) They were so excited they were almost vibrating.  It's easy to forget when you play the same course all the time just how great it is.  People come from all over the country to tee it up here.  They were convinced they wanted to play it from the tips (7400yds) and I talked them in to starting on the regular men's tee's(6800yds) just to see how it goes.  I said if they are playing well after a couple of holes we could move back.

After they both lost several balls on the first three holes I asked them if they were ready to move back to the tips.  They decided they were fine with the regular men's tees since neither of them could get over the fairway bunkers on the par 5 second hole from the regular men's tees.  I'm not sure they could have carried enough golf balls to play 18 holes from the tips.

They truly had a grand time.  It was fun watching them play the course for the first time.  Their attitudes were great.  They struggled mightily and still had a blast.  They both lost a couple of sleeves of balls on the front nine and it didn't bother them at all.  One of the guys was putting for a quad on the 7th hole after his buddy made a 15 footer for triple, and he was lamenting his struggle.  His buddy looked at him and said, "we are doing fine.......its just some first tee jitters".  We all laughed all the way to the 8th tee.   Every hole was an adventure for them and it was a hoot watching their reactions after each shot.

I had to quit after nine since I had a date with a lawn mower and my yard, and they were thanking me for showing them where to hit their balls and for being a fun guy to play with. They were going to stop by the Clubhouse for a couple of beers and hot dogs, and see if they could make it all the way around with the 12 balls they had left.  I figured that with beer and hot dogs, they were shoe in's to get it done.

It was a great day for them (and me) and it made me appreciate how lucky I am to get to play a lot of golf and meet some great people.

Golf really is a great game.

Took my son(5) out for our normal Sunday round and of course we were backed up due to Father's Day so after a couple holes we invited the pair behind us to play. They were both appreciative and really nice guys. They were in a skins game with each other and were talking trash all day, made for a pretty entertaining day. They were clearly censoring themselves because of my son which made it even more entertaining for me. They were a couple of the nicer guys I've been paired with, I hope to play with them again.

Couple of weeks ago I was paired up with "future me".

Not kidding. I'm pretty sure it was me in 25 years and I came back in time to play a round with myself. We had the same driver, same putter, same type of game (short, accurate, good short game and putting). Same sense of humor. It was weird!!

Got paired up with a single in a cart this morning. He saw three walkers and decided to play with the group behind us. I overheard him say, “They better let us play through.” Yeah, about that. When we finished they were on 15.

... My favorite was when my 2 pards and I got paired up with a guy from the Outlaw Tour in town to qualify for the Phoenix Open. Playing Aguila where the qualifier was taking place a few days later, he hit from the tips at 7100 and shot 7 under on the front 9. I shot 3 under and felt like a hack in comparison. He averaged around 350 off the tee with a normal looking swing, but just a blur through impact. I have never played with anyone that hit it so far and accurately. Hit a 3 iron stinger about 30yds farther than my driver. I think the most impressive part was his wedge control because with that length he had a wedge in his hand most holes and consistently put it within 6-8 feet.

... My pards are probably a 12 and an 18 and he seemed to enjoy their company as they play fast, don't make excuses or complain and they love the game. Super friendly and just a joy to spend 4.5 hours with and of course a little dose of humility is always welcome in this game.

This goes back about 2 years ago, but I got paired with a blind guy.  He was around 80 years old & a delight to play with.  He had almost total blindness but could see shadows and very large objects.  The golf ball was impossible for him to see.  He had a request of me.  It was only 2 things.  Take him to his ball so he could feel it with his clubhead.  And tell him what yardage & direction he needed to hit.  He played remarkably well.  It was something I will never forget.  He played triple bogey golf and shot over 120, but he was fast and kept pace and followed etiquette.  Just so turned out that we spent 5 hours in a cart together & enjoyed the day of golf together.  The other 2 players in our 4some were helpful too, they would assist with distances and directions.  Needless to say, I gave him a ton of gimmees since there seemed to be no need to have him putt excessively.  "Inside the leather" was more like "inside the flagstick".  Toward the end of the round he said to me "Son, I have no family.  I am wealthy and need to leave my money to those who show kindness.  I would like to put you in my Last Will & Testament".  Of course this took me back & I said that it was not necessary.  He insisted.  So, without getting into details, there might be some money coming my way one day!  The whole day was surreal and the round of golf I will never forget!

That's one of the few times where etiquette goes out the window. If they have the balls to go out and play golf blind then I'm going to let him go first every time while I sit back and watch in amazement.
