My 7i 6i 5i all seem to go the same distance, WTF

I had this same issue and learned I was casting the club.  I went for a 30 minute lesson and my distance increased 25 yards on each club shortly after.  I also began posting the best rounds of my life after solving this problem.  Almost every par 4 was a driver, an iron, and wedge in.  Now I'm frequently going for the green on my second shot on par 5s.

So, general rule, lower the club, the faster I need to swing ?

PS: I just re-watched 1986 Masters because of your amazing article.

You're a great writer, I wish you'd write more!

Few definitions so you're on the same page as every else:

  • The lower the number on the club, the lower the loft
  • The lower the number on the club, then physical length of the club is longer. e.g. a 7 iron is 1/2" longer than an 8 iron, etc.
  • When someone says "the longer club" that refers to a lower numbered club.
  • The lower the number on the club, the clubhead is automatically moving faster than a higher numbered club, because the length of the club is longer.  *(assuming all other things are equal). Swing a pencil (6")vs swinging a driver (45"). The driver head is moving much faster than the eraser because the shaft of the driver is longer
  • Then as Monte pointed out, if you don't swing fast enough in general, using lower numbered clubs won't result in more distance.

Then you'll ask, how do I swing faster? And the answer can be any one or more of the following (I'm probably forgetting a bunch)

  • Your technique needs improvement
  • Your old and short like me with short arms
  • You need to improve your physical overall health

From your description, it's overall technique that needs improvement which will help all areas of your game.

So, you're saying the opposite?   I don't need to swing harder/faster on the lower clubs, since the head is already moving faster, due to a longer awing arc?

I took a lesson and told him my low mid irons do not loft and all go the same distance. (130-150)

We worked on adding swing speed.

  1. Aggressive explosive takeback (as fast as possible)
  2. Let takeback speed naturally lead to deeper backswing
  3. Early release of wrists during downswing

My wedge normally goes 100.   At the lesson, my wedge was carrying 110-115.

I then did the violent Bryson swing w/ 8i and 5i and then driver.

5i lofted higher than normal and everything went farther.

This is the direction I will take.

I will try to get some video

What is casting?

I took a lesson today.

I was told to keep my club face closed on take back.

This helps with the feeling of descending blow.

I was also told I was leading with arms and not legs.

So, I will try to start downswing with legs&hips and let arms lag behind.

I have not swung a club in a month, and have given up on golf.

I think what killed me was taking 2 lessons and getting very different feedback.

Both lessons are very high end both in cost and pedigree (PGA event experience)

The 6/29 lesson basically told me to swing as hard as I can with a fast take away.

This went against everything I ever believed about a clean pure golf swing (Freddy)

I felt like I was now reduced to a jerky Hollywood swing that looks terrible and tight and muscled.

The 7/5 lesson felt more valid, and he said my arms need to lag my hips more.

Right now they are one unit, with no separation.

However, I felt like when I exaggerated the hip starting the swing, results were hardly any different.

I find no joy in not being able to hit past 150 yards.   (Full driver 220, PW 100)

It feels like complete hackers who barely even understand golf can out bomb me on their first day on the course.

I feel zero motivation to swing a club and have given up for this season.

If I can't buy my way out of this with a 7W, then I am walking away from this game after a lifetime of being a advocate of the game.

Thank you for listening.

You can gain yardage from a 7W over a 5i without correcting the problem. But this won't help your overall game. Is the goal to get better at Golf? Learn to not cast. Learn to take divot after ball.

I'm 70 and had a similar issue. Bought 7 and 9 woods and it's made a big difference.

I'm a sweeper and don't take divots so using the woods suit me.

I've also worked on hitting down more with the irons and am taking a shorter backswing and playing a shot that feels more like a punch shot. I'm hitting the shorter irons further and more accurately and hope to embed it and gradually work back to my normal backswing.
