Full Face Wedges

I ordered my first full face wedge yesterday. Tried out the 56 degree Callaway Jaws and the 56 degree RTX Zipcore, and was impressed by both, including full shots. As a mid handicapper they definitely gave me confidence 

 

Gimmick or no brainer ?

No brainer.  If you use the entire face of the club why not have grooves over the full face of the club?

I bought two Mac Daddy CBs via CPO, a 58/12 over the winter.  Then when I got fitted the set wedge was a 56*, so I got a 60* to go with that.

If you're hitting certain shots where the strike point is out on the toe than it can definitely be worth it.

Open faced flops that I catch out on the toe maintain more spin with my full race rtx versus everything I’ve played prior.

No brainer for me. Went to 54* and 60* full toe after realizing open faced shots were out off the toe on the regular.  Went with the black finish as it minimizes the size so looks less like a shovel.

Any wedge shot that you may cut across (flop, bunker, etc) can be greatly improved with the full face models.

I used the original hi toe Tm wedge and really liked it in the 58. I play 52/58 wedge setup and prefer one go to wedge for around the green. I really only hit my 52 for bump and run, longer pitch shots square face, and longer bunker shots. 
 

I think it’s definitely a small advantage to have full face grooves on flop  shots and bunker shots. I can’t say it was a game changer but it definitely gives you more consistent spin, especially in the rough. I wouldn’t recommend it for any mid/low lofted wedges (lower than 56*) personally. I just don’t think there is as much benefit.

I like them in my lob wedge.  I don’t really see the point on a club less lofted (although I also don’t see an issue if you don’t mind the appearance).  Any shot that I’m likely to hit high on the toe is going to be with my most lofted wedge.  Out of the bunker I find it gives me a good deal of confidence.  I find it a little harder to feel confident on full shots (full is basically a 3/4 shot).  All in all I think it can be helpful if you are presently hitting the ball where there are no grooves.

I just played my first round with full faced PXG Sugar Daddy 2 wedges and hit a few full swing shots.  They were pretty much dead middle so I can’t speak to whether the full face grooves had any effect.  I can say they felt very good and went the proper distances with lots of check, very little roll out.

Can't look down at them. Very foreign on the eyes. However the concept is great, and it's great people are getting success with them.

Why would a full face wedge feel any different out of the middle than any other wedge ??

I’ve been using the Cleveland rtx full face raw lob wedge for about a half a year now and love it. I do manipulate the face quite a bit so there are plenty of times when I’m playing a high lob or out of the bunker that I see the ball mark being on the toe side where groove would be non existent on a non full face wedge. 
 

What I like the most from specifically from the Cleveland full face is the look at address was not off putting from my previous rtx zipcore therefore my full square shots didn’t feel awkward at all and was pretty much just plug and play. 
 

My only gripe was the grind was not as aggressive or not as manipulative in changing face angles but just did a little extra grinding on the toe heel and trailing edge and it’s been money

And I'm just the opposite, love the way they look.  I don't know that the extra grooves really help my game, but I like the look and it inspires confidence.  Most of my struggles are with my short game as I don't get a chance to play or practice much so any confidence, I can get I will take!

Just got the Cally PM Grind 19 in 58* and it’s a confidence booster. I don’t hit the middle everytime, especially from the deep rough. Good to know there’s grooves anywhere I catch it. 
 

Regarding the full shot/swing question, it’s not its forte, but I get reliable distances from a 3/4 swing. Great club

I pay the CBX2 Full Face 58* out of the sand and I am not sure it benefits me but after playing so long, I don't want to go back to "regular" grooves.  I am use the full face groves in that club.

So much so that I am waiting to replace the CBX2 until the Zipcore CBX comes out with full face groves.

I have the TM Hi Toe 58* and really enjoy it.  Although it took me some time to get use to the look.  Performance may be better, but it's not worse.
