club weight progression

Is there a recommended club weight progression between irons? I understand about weight variances between components but, is there a certain acceptable range that the weights should progress?

I weighed my clubs and this is what I found:

 4- 405g

 5- 413

 6- 418

 7- 423

 8- 432

 9- 434

Are these numbers something I should be trying to fix or am I just being too picky?

It’s my understanding, gained from other club builders on the net and YouTube, that there should be approximately a 7g difference  between clubs.

The SW system is based on 7 grams TOTAL wgt difference, but most dont see it and think its head wgt, and thats correct enough, but since we mostly use constant wgt shafts, and grips of the same weight, the whole wgt difference comes as head wgt, but its actually TOTAL wgt progression.

If we MOI matched the same iron set, our TWG progression would be right above 8 grams pr club, or more correct, 16 grams pr inch vs 14 grams pr inch on flat SW value.

Since head wgt progression is important, (so is TWG progression), we always have to see them as a sum here, so for the BAG as a whole, there will most often be a progression for how many grams pr inch we see in each GROUP of clubs, starting low with the diver and woods (might be down at 10 grams pr inch as the minimum, while when we comes to the irons and wedges, we might see 14-18 grams pr inch, and in extreme cases (AMT shafts), we might see 20 grams pr inch who is the standard for DG AMT.

Total wgt progression is personal. Old timers who started playing golf when drivers and woods mostly had steel shafts, will often have a lower progression ratio than player who came to the sport after graphite shafts in woods became the norm. (lower progression ratio = higher shaft wgt in the driver relative to irons, read old timers wants/needs more shaft wgt in their driver and woods than others.

Since head wgt "is like it is", but can be adjusted both ways, we focus on SHAFT wgt progression when we want to estimate Total wgt progression. Start with the wgt of the grips you will use, add tape, epoxy and ferrule. Now add expected "standard" head wgt for that club #. Whats missing now is the shaft, and thats where we alter it, so in woods, we "should" use minimum 2.3 grams pr inch (max 5 grams pr inch), for hybrids its spot on 5 grams, for irons 5 to 6 grams pr inch.

Here is my suggestion for shaft wgt progression in the bag. Numbers looks like its flat 5 grams pr inch but its not, since uncut shaft length is different, so there is a "invisible jump" UP from woods to hybrids in the chart, but in the chart it looks like flat 5 grams pr inch.

Thank you. Your detailed explanation is confusing enough to this old brain that it concluded that it's not going to worry too much about it 😆

Its quite simple....
Since its all personal, we have to find what fits US
If we have 2 clubs (no matter what clubs), one in the long end of the bag, the other in the short, and both is clubs that works really good and feels just right, we note down the specs, here play length and total wgt. Now we can draw the lines between those 2 points.
When we now look at the other clubs, they should fit into the slope you just made, and this way we can identify if we have total wgt issues or play length issues with the others, since they dont work as good as our 2 model clubs does. We can also use it when we look for a new wood or hybrid by comparing specs with what we got using this numbers. if numbers moves way outside of 12 to 18 grams pr inch, it WANT feel right, and you will know why.

I didn't intend to make light of what you were saying. You actually answered my question in the last sentence. My clubs feel fine when swinging. The two biggest weight differences, 8g between 4-5 and 9g between 7-8 just got me wondering. Thanks.

I just went through process of swing weighting my clubs by putting data into two different web sites.

The total club weight data point was pretty easy to determine.

The length from fulcrum point to butt of grip, not so accurate.  It was easy enough to find fulcrum point, but I think the measurement really needs to be exact.

So since I already recorded total club weight for each club,  I looked for a weight progression.

All the clubs where very close to 8 gram increments.

I adjusted some heads with lead tape and ended up with 8 gr progression from 4i to pw.  Then 7 grams to gw, aw , sw which i made all exact same weight.

Starting at:

4i  420 grams

Gw, aw and sw 477gr.

No idea if any of this will make any difference. 8 grams does not feel like much at all it's like .28 ounces per club

Total weight difference between 4i and sw is only 57grams, 2 ounces.

One thing that was interesting is the gw was so close in weight to pw, I always felt like gw was just too short on full swings. Not sure if weight made a difference but since I added 3 grams to it to get it 7grams heavier then pw. Who knows.

I think this is good enough for now. Gonna play a few rounds this week and see if anything feels at all different.
