Fun ideas that should catch on

Always thinking about cool things we could do on the course that would be fun if they caught on… for instance, I love to find random tees or ball markers from other courses so when I travel or am a guest somewhere I like to leave a ball marker from my home club on the last green. No telling who will pick it up and where it will go.

what are some fun things you do that would be fun if they caught on?

One thing i have done for many years is when i find a ball i don't want on the course, i leave it right on the hazard line of another hole. That way whenever someone hits a ball there in a later group, they think they've gotten lucky for a few seconds....But then when they walk up to their ball all of their hopes and dreams are crushed.

So that was you. Thanks!

I am doing this from now on.

Just think of the systemic effects after finding the ball.   This sort of event could reroute someone's life.

It's going to catch on.

What always intrigues me is the idea that someone will surely cheat and pretend it's actually their ball. So in a way I am entrapping. Like when they used to catch predators on dateline. It's the exact same thing

It's a wonderful opportunity for a cheater.

At my club we do a Red, White & Blue tournament on the 4th of July.

Basically you tee off from a Red tee, then a White, then a Blue and continue in that order as you play your 18-hole round.

This year I was able to make 2 Eagles, both by way of Red tees. One was a reachable Par-5 and the other was a Drivable Par-4 where I chipped in.

It's a little silly but it's a fun day.

I played in an event they called "the greens keepers revenge". Basically 18 holes that are created from the existing course but you don't play any from tee to green. Some examples:

Played the first hole by teeing off next to the cart barn instead of the first tee. You had to hit a huge 20-30 yard hook to hit the fairway.

One of the par 3 was played from the right of the hole. Which meant a blind uphill (20' or so) shot over a bunker with the pin tucked just behind.

Another par 3 was played from some scraggly rough above the hole with a lightning fast downhill green to a front pin. Pretty much had to hit a perfect flop shot that would land just on the green and hope it didn't run all the way off.

One of the par 5s was played as a par 4 from a fairway bunker.

Can't recall all the rest but you get the idea. Tough to pull off because it's a lot of work and you need the whole course. Played as a 4 person scramble, was tons of fun.

I think it would be cool to normalize scrambles even if you get paired with people you don't know. Pace of play would be amazing, and I think a lot of the weekend warriors would actually like it.

I've always found scrambles to take way longer to play than a regular round of golf.

I think stableford scoring should be encouraged for those new to the game and those that don't practice much and play only a couple times a year.  Its a way that you can get out for a round of golf but if you have a few bad holes you can put the ball in your pocket at a double bogey and take a 0 on those holes and keep moving along.  It also teaches newer players that bogey isn't a bad score as they still get 1 point for a bogey.  It helps encourage better decision making and course management rather than being tempted to hit very low percentage hero shots based solely on the lofty and unrealistic allure of par.

I took a drop from ob today with a found ball on a terrible lie(as in I hit found ball where I found it) playing match play for fun with one of my regular group. I took a stroke but loved the challenge instead of an easy drop. He sucks at putting so even with a stroke we split the hole. No money on the line, we both play better when under a little pressure. Drives one of our other regulars batshit crazy.

I suppose it depends on the skill level of the players. If I play a round with my friends that hardly ever play, its a helluva lot faster to have them drop one by me rather than duffing it down the fairway (or more likely down the OB line in the thick stuff). Plus you never have to wait for guys playing ping pong chipping back and forth over the green, and most greens not all 4 players need to putt out to finish the hole. So in my experience it helps with the pace. Maybe I'm wrong.

But I do know they like the scramble format and have more fun.

Oh okay you were referring to playing a scramble style in a casual round as opposed to a scramble tournament.  Then yes I would agree that is much faster for novice players than making them play every shot after a duff.

One of the courses that I play on does a one man scramble tournament.  You are able to take a second shot after your first one, but if you do, you must play the second shot.  It's fun and different.

We do a version of the same event at my club.  It is an absolute blast.  You find yourself attempting shots from places you usually aren't.  Even the worst player scores, and it's such a team-building event filled with such encouragement and fun.

The funny thing about it, is that everyone prays to avoid a playoff.

We all just want to stay in the clubhouse, drink beers, and BS.

For sure. Everybody is readying every putt like it's the 18th at the US Open. Plus they always jam way too many groups on.

I like to fix ball marks on the green, not just my own but others if I see them.

I wish that would catch on. (Within the bounds of not holding up play)

I always try to fix a couple besides my own when I'm on the green.  It's unfortunate that people don't fix their own.

So speaking of games, and I've posted about this a couple of years ago, but thought it would be appropriate here.  My league partner and I play a couple of 9 hole "events" against each other after our league season ends. I'm currently a 4 index, he's about a 12.

EVENT 1 - "Red Tee Challenge"

We play straight up, he plays the red tees (most forward) and I play our normal "gold" tees. Match play. I won 2 up this year.

EVENT 2 - "Worst Ball Scramble Challenge"

We play straight up, we both play the gold tees. I hit 2 ball for each shot, and he gets to pick which one I play (choosing the worst of my 2 shots). One exception: I negotiated that if I make the first ball, it "counts" and I don't have to hit a 2nd shot. Big time when it comes to putting. Match play.  My buddy won 1 up making bird on the last hole. I shot 44 (par 36). Made a bad double on the 8th hole.

Event 2 is really fun, and I get into a rhythm: Tee up two balls at the same time. Driving was not an issue this year, but my iron game was off and only hit 2 greens in reg. Chipped well, but couldn't make a putt!
