Srixon ZX MKII Irons

For those who went to a lighter shaft, can I expect to get used to the weight difference?

I have played X100's for years but had a better fit in the simulator with KBS C-Taper Lite 110s. After playing a few rounds I find my miss a consistent thin push. Struggling to convince myself to take a full swing and make solid contact.

Over thinking the next step may be lead tape.

For some reason they shipped my lone ZX5 AW by itself and it arrived today.  Chipping around the yard, it seems to be working great.  Hit a few shag balls out into the field behind the house and man it feels good.  I was really concerned about the sole as a picker, but my initial impressions today make me feel better 🙂

Played 18 Saturday, 9 holes yesterday and 9 holes this morning with my new zx4 Mkiis (5-AW). I play off a 9 handicap currently for context. Finally adjusting and striking the ball better so getting more of a true a sense of them. Today course was wet, and the turf interaction was phenomenal. Got through turf so well at impact. In and out without getting stuck or digging too deep. Was thrilled with that. Long irons (5-6) for me, bomb when struck well. Still trying to figure out my distances with them and what it may mean for gapping. I mentioned on a ball thread that my prior gamer ball (z-star) is not spinning enough on 5-8 iron making it challenging to hold greens in 5-6, and 7-8 rolling out much more than I like. Played z-Star diamond on Saturday and didn’t notice rollout issue. Seemed much closer to pitch mark with that ball. Will test diamond again soon.

Today I was striking the ball well (for me), and even my mishits still ended up on green (except a trash swing and a straight pull). Forgiveness of the clubs was impressive. So easy to hit and get at least decent results. And when I flush one, feels, flies, and sounds great. I’ve had no issues with the scoring clubs (AW-9 iron). Have performed exactly as expected so far. It is the long end of the irons where I’m unsure of (I think because of lower spin). Hoping ball change will get me more comfortable at that end. Still early days as I’ve only had the clubs for a little over a week. Mostly really happy with them. With a few tweaks at the long end, could be great.

The ground is still mush and the bermuda still dormant, so I'm trying not to jump to conclusions too early. But I'm having a little bit tougher time with the ZX7's over my 745's. I really like to flight the ball with my irons, I prefer to club up and hit a punch shot over trying to jump on one to get it there. I'm having a little trouble doing that with these. They want to get up in the air more than my 745's. I will say that forgiveness and distance consistency on full swings is off the charts. I'm having typical early season trouble finding the sweet spot with current ground conditions, and I've hit some real stinkers that somehow still carried pin high. Was hoping I'd be smitten from the first swing, but I think it's simply too early in the season for that to even be a possibility.

Thin shots are not uncommon when making a move to significantly lighter shafts. You’ll probably adjust after a couple weeks but keep an eye on it.
i went from 120g to 95g and after a couple months went back up to 105 and 110g and think I found my sweet spot.

Thanks for the case study. I’m at 20g lighter than previous setup.

Like others have said above, 12 holes of freezing cold golf won’t give me real good feedback yet.

I’ll keep an eye on it. Just don’t want to get into another purchase for swapping shafts.

Could anyone comment on the feel of ZX4 Mk ii vs ZX5 Mk ii?
I tried both original versions last year, and the ZX5 felt way better than the ZX4 to me then.

But I've heard so much praise for ZX4 Mk ii, so I'm wondering if they are up there with the ZX5s now (feel-wise)?

I recalled your earlier post about Recoil 95 shafts being delayed. Wanted to let you know that I received my ZX7 7-PW with Recoil 95 F4 yesterday so maybe your wait won't be much longer. My ZX5 5 & 6 iron arrived almost 2 weeks ago.

I like the ZX4 feel better. ZX5 has a little clicky to it. But I don’t mind it.

No seemed to be more zx4 and zx5 discussion and where to gap. Maybe I need to go back further. Also figured some people may have received their sets etc.

All good - cliff notes: looks are up for debate…some prefer the OG model; some like the mkii.  If you already have the previous version, no real need to upgrade - at least in the zx7.  The only real major upgrade/change was in the zx4, where mkii apparently looks much better.  Tempting to get the last version for about 400 less per set - I know Carls has them for 899 plus a 10% kickback for future purchases.

The prior ZX7 was known to have a bit of a hot draw in it at times and Srixon tried to address this with this version at the request of their tour pros. The new one looks wonderful at address, just wish they would shrink the 8-PW a little. The PW is hideous.

Interestingly... I went from 105's in my OG 7's to 120 weight shafts in the 7II's.  First couple of rounds I hit a couple of shots fat, something I just don't do. I'll catch it a bit thin on rare occasion but not fat.

It never dawned on me until reading this post that the heavier shaft may have been the reason. After a few range sessions and 3 rounds I'm no longer having the fat shots problem but I did a couple of times initially.

Would make sense to potentially hit a few thin going to a lighter shaft at first.

Interesting. Did you notice any changes in feel of at the top or bottom of your bag (as a result of the heavier iron shaft)?

What shaft did you come from, and what is current? (Apologies if info is in your signature, I can’t seem to see on mobile).

I am about to order a combo set, thinking about going with the 4 in the 4, 5 and 6 in the 5, and 7-P in the 7, all in modus 105 X - if I keep everything at standard loft is that going to be a good place to start for gapping purposes with this lineup?

There's no A wedge in lefty in the 7s, so thinking about getting a zipcore 50 bent to 51 to match the listed A wedge loft - would this in the modus wedge 115 be a good match?

Playing a 4w and graphite shafted hollow 3i on one end and a 57 and a 64 on the other end, that plus a driver and putter gets me to 14...

I was looking at a combo with either a zx utility or zx4 as the 4; zx5 for 5-7; zx7 for 8-P.  I do want to try the modus 105x…have seen that come up time and time again in the forums.  I didn’t get along well during past fittings with modus 120 stiff…wonder if the 105x is a better fit?  Only played lz 6.0 and Oban ct115 s in the past.

Concur with the PW comment.  I went to Vokey in a 46.  Also makes 4-9 more affordable....

Same here @Inglewood, very interested in your results. Please do share your observations after your fitting.

I have i230s in the bag right now. I've been taking lessons and making a pretty significant swing improvement to fix something I've struggled with for a long time -- but you all know how swing changes go. It's fits and starts. At the moment I'm a little worried the i230s will be a little higher-launching/higher-spinning than I want after these changes are sort of baked in, which has my eye straying. A sane person would just hold tight, wait until these changes are fully ironed out, and then evaluate equipment from there. But I'm not a sane person, I'm a WRXer.

What shafts on your i230?  Just curious - I was hitting the 7iron demo with lz 6.0 higher than the mizuno forged with same shaft.

DG 120 S300 for me. I love the feel of LZs but do tend to hit them too high.

Unrelated thought: I see you mentioned you're looking at a potential Srixon combo of ZX4/ZX Utility at the 4 iron, then ZX5 5-7, ZX7 8-PW. Seems really smart, and you can obviously bend lofts. But a set-up I'd consider would have a slight little tweak that in my opinion might help avoid any bunching at the long end: What if you went ZX Utility 3 iron (20 degrees), ZX4 5 iron (23 degrees), ZX5 6/7 (27, 31 degrees), ZX7 8-PW (36, 41, 46 degrees)? Basically gets you more of a driving iron into the bag without giving up anything.

Looking at the lofts, I just have a feeling that folks putting together Srixon combo sets are going to get a lot of bunching at the long end if they aren't careful. I fully admit I 100% could be wrong! And you can always bend stuff as needed. Just a thought I wanted to share, though.

Great callout...

I was looking at bending ZX7 8-P 1* strong (35/40/45); ZX5 5-7 lofts would stay standard (24/27/31) and for the 4 irons, could go with ZX4 at 21 (or bent 1* strong to 20) or ZX U 3 at 20*.  Agree - with the 'jacked' lofts, you can basically skip the 4 iron as it gets crowded at the high end.  More to come...
