Name 3 Movies you didn't want to watch but they turned out to be a favorite

My wife will watch movies I wouldn't.  Most of the time I don't enjoy them but every once in awhile I get sucked in.  Three that come to mind are:

 

Star Trek 2009

 

John Wick

 

The Bourne Identity.

 

All are movies I wouldn't of ever watched on my own but after 20 minutes I was sucked in.  She did it to me with the season 1 episode 1 of Vikings too.

Racking my small brain but can't think of any.  Seems that most often if my wife picks something I have no interest in, I won't like it.  Of course, I've also picked some that she has no interest in that she ends up not liking.  Our best surprises come when we pick a movie neither of us really has any specific interest in, and we both end up liking it.

I can only think of 1 off the top of my head.  I’m not a fan of Xmas themed movies, but the 1 I did end up liking is Love Actually.  Will watch it once a year.

I'd agree with John Wick... never even heard of it and just randomly flipped on HBO one night in a hotel (we don't have cable at home)

Napolean Dynamite... another one I'd never heard of but once you start to understand what the heck is going on in the movie (nothing) it's pretty funny. 

Game of Thrones... I'm not into sci-fi/dragons but it's the best series I've ever watched.

A long time ago my dad rented "Babe" on VHS  (remember that?).

 

I told him he was stupid for renting a kids movie about a pig.

 

Late that night after everyone had gone to bed, I was bored and popped it in.

 

Holy cow I loved that movie.  Never since have I questioned my father's judgement in movies.

Edge of Tomorrow: looked like a normal sci-fi flick. Tons of movies in this genre etc....it's one of my 10 favorite movies. It's so so good

 

Drive: I wasn't super motivated to see it, reviews said Ryan Gosling doesn't even speak. It's my favorite movie of all time right now. 

 

Free Guy: Ryan Reynolds has like a 5% hit rate. With that 5% being deadpool or Van Wilder movies. Free Guy was really funny and actually a really sweet movie. Great date movie if youre a young dude

''Singing In The Rain''. Enjoy it every time I watch it. Gene Kelly was bad a**.

 

'' Saturday Night Fever''......it's a great movie, the music is epic, I love The Bee Gees and I once  played in a metal band, lol.

 

''Mad Max, Thunder Road". Thought, no way could they match Road Warrrior or replace Mel. It's fantastic and holds its own.

This is hard.  I usually am a very good judge of movies.  If I think it’s crap. It usually is.  
 

I’ll name one that for some reason I detest.  And I thought it would be good.  Castaway.  Only movie in my life i ever walked out on.  Tried to watch it years later at home. Left the room again.  It irritates me to no end. 
 

chick flick that i alwasy groan when it comes on , I mean I detest the idea of it. But if I catch it near the end , I’m glued to it …is you’ve got mail.    It’s the dog.  Brinkley is the star of the show. 
 

two movies that delivered more than expected and I expected to like - tropic Thunder and Napoleon dynamite.  I saw tropic Thunder in theatre.  And that’s the most laughter I’ve ever heard.  The opening scenes.  I can’t describe them here. But you were led to believe it was part of the opening advertisements.  Like real products.  And it was done so over the top , but well that you were fooled.  You didn’t realize the movie had started yet.     Once we realized it the place erupted.  And it didn’t stop the entire time.  
 

Napoleon is just cinematic gold.  To this day when Kip backs over the Tupperware bowl with the van and it busts. I will fall out laughing.  Such great execution of the obvious.  
 

here’s one  that maybe qualifies as “ expected to hate but loved “. 50 first dates.  Sandler shows his range.  I always resist it and then end up hooked.  
 

I have a wife if you can’t tell.  And wives control the tv remote during non golf hours.  😂.

One more, Starship Troopers.  There is no way this movie piqued my interest but once I started watching it kept getting better.

A Fish Called Wanda…wanted no part of seeing this but high school girlfriend insisted, I could not stop laughing.

 

Jaws…I do not like scary movies and have this irrational fear of being bitten by a shark the couple times a year I go to the beach so I never watched this movie until sometime in the early 90’s. Now I can’t not watch if I know it’s on.

 

Failure to Launch…for some reason I find SJP really annoying and have no interest in watching anything she’s in but found the rest of the cast to be very funny and surprisingly truly enjoyed this movie.

Starship Troopers is a really interesting movie. No one got it at first (meaning it's very intentionally a satire) and it was terribly reviewed and called propaganda even. This is hilarious because the director (Paul Verhoeven) grew up in WW2 Europe in an area that was being bombed, and you'd think maybe someone would have asked him even back then before the internet blew up....why he made a movie like this. 

 

People understand it now as rebuke of war mongering. There's a lot of little lines in the movie that I didn't notice at first either. In retrospect its like "oh right". Not to mention Neil patrick Harris uniform at the end is basically a Nazi uniform. 

 

Anyway, it's not a masterpiece or anything...But it's highly re-watchable. And it's funny to see film nerds now considering it a classic.

I did not know the history, thanks.

 

I do know that my wife had picked it up at the video store (anyone remember going to the video store on a Saturday night, lol) because a friend of ours was coming over for dinner.

 

At first it was almost unwatchable but then we found ourselves laughing at just how ridiculous it was.  My sense of humor is a little off anyway.

Cant really think of any off the top of my head but remember being in a movie for something and saw the preview for Avatar and was thinking the whole time "who is going to watch this goofy movie" then saw directed by James Cameron and that peaked my interest. I think I got the DVD when it came out and watched it and thought it was a great movie. Will go see the sequel over xmas break.

A few years ago my wife and I were drunkenly watching some crappy Christmas movies, ended up loving The Christmas Chronicles with Kurt Russell. 

 

2nd vote for Edge of Tomorrow- not totally original but brilliantly executed. 

 

I was also skeptical about The Greatest Game Ever Played and proven very wrong. Definitely a top-3 golf film for me.

The Lion King

 

My dad took me and a half dozen friends to the theatre for my 10th birthday. We were trying to catch tickets to watch Speed but it was sold out. The only other movie showing at that time was the Lion King. I was so embarrassed that I brought my friends to watch a kiddie movie. But that movie had me hooked the whole way through. After the movie, I asked my friends what they thought (ready to join in and say how stupid it was) and everyone said it was so cool. I watch it every few years and I'm transported back to that birthday. 

 

Toy Story was another one that became one of my all-time faves after I had zero expectations.
