It is so nuanced though. When is too much?  The Morocco game today was really enjoyable. The France game?  Not so much. I have French relatives, I don’t care for them. I have been to France, I didn’t care for many of them either, so I am showing some bias, but the ticky tacky BS in the first half after they scored should have resulted in more yellows. Not for aggressiveness, just for repetitiveness.  I played pre-red card for the professional foul, but boy did those fouls slow down the English attack.  It would have permitted the ref to let ‘em play more, and fairly.

I don’t watch a ton of soccer bc I hate the diving and the goalie laying in the ground (Lloris anyone?).  Get your rest somehow else.

I love the game.  I loved playing.  But until Greizmann got his yellow the game was a slog.  And, I feel awful for Kane missing the PK.  He must fee gutted and he doesn’t deserve that.

I did venture to Pkndon years ago and saw Ronaldo live with ManU.  He deserves better too. He was a man amongst boys, and this with Giggs, etc.

Kane's penalty has just landed in my back garden.....bit gutted this morning. The ref was just plain hopeless, needed a European CL ref last night nit that Muppet, but overall the standard has been dire in that aspect.

On England, went as far as I expected as going into the world cup hopes were low but once you get to the quarters you start dreaming.....buggar. It's the hope that kills ya.

Must say, Ronaldo didn't deserve better he was a spoilt brat and behaved as so. Had a brilliant 18 months and bogged off to real. His status at old Trafford is now gone, were really angry with his antics, glad he's gone. He'll never be regarded in the same light as Giggs, scholes, Rooney, cantona, Keane, Robson, Hughes, Beckham, Neville who just bleed united....sorry rant over

I wasn’t thinking of him being seen as a United icon, but rather as an all-time great.

Folks really got on him, but he’s 37/38 years old.  When I saw him he was physically larger than the others, faster, stronger, quicker, and his skills were unreal.

He was never my favorite player, he wasn’t even my favorite player on those ManU teams, but I do respect him as a player.

Commenting on a few posts above...

100% agree with the diving, or embellishing contact.  Guys act like they've been hit with a 20mm round when they get bumped.  And the worst, the dramatic clutching of the face if a hand brushes their neck.  Trying to get opponents sent off.  Hate it.  It's time for retroactive video punishment of the offenders.

Ronaldo...  I just can't give him much credit.  Extremely talented, but with more ego than talent.  When his reaction to a teammate scoring ranges from irritation to anger that the ball wasn't passed to him for a shot...  yeah, go on over there, sulk in the corner, and let the others play.

Some of the referees definitely appear to be out of their depth. It's a sad negative for the biggest event in football.

I can't help but wonder how Senegal would have done if Mané were healthy.  Perhaps it doesn't change anything, but any team would miss a player of that magnitude.

Now, a few days of waiting...

I should clarify, Scholes was my favorite ManU guy.  There was no ego, he did what he did and he did it for the team.  If it was ugly, skillful, forward, back, it didn’t matter he just did the work for the team.

Back then when I was watching more, my favorite goal scorer was Didier Drogba.  That guy fought through everything to score goals, a rare quality for a forward who are largely prima donnas.  I guess that’s why I don’t get the hate.  If you’re in the US it’s like hating a wide receiver for being temperamental.  Their respective jobs are so egocentric it’s rare to find one who hasn’t personified the position.

It's funny to hear NA based people talk about how much baseball players or basketball, or certain football players are a-holes, dbags, whatever.  They aren't even third division when it comes to soccer's prima donnas.  Maybe it's the enclosed nature of hockey, but when they score, the scorer looks to celebrate with teammates.  I've never understood why soccer players run *away* from their teammates after a goal.

I saw a post somewhere some time ago in the last couple years saying how Ronaldo's style  doesn't really fit with the modern game.  Something about how he needs the ball is more of a prior era style that teams don't really play anymore.  Tough to say if Portugal would have been better served with him in or out of lineup.

Pepe and Bruno Fernandes had some interesting points about the official in their match.  Pierluigi Collina is definitely missed.

Good man, scholes was a joy of a player to watch, just simply brilliant. Also a lovely guy to talk to, had the pleasure of talking to him a number of times as he's never left the area. Family to him is everything, very good golfer too. Played in the pro celebrity at the BMW at Wentworth with pep.....both very good golfers and really nice people.

Worthy mention about Giggs, forgot his personal life....what an unbelievable player he was. Like Best, a shame he played for a country that couldnt get to a world cup

I think the standard in this world cup has been the worse, and with var it's really not good enough. The ref in the Netherlands Argentina game...wow, lost complete control. And why have a Brazilian ref for a heavy weight battle between two European games, should have been the German ref who knows most of the players through the CL.....oh well, can't do anything about now

I think there are a lot similarities:

1. incredible ego that no matter what happens "I" (speaking for them) am going to score.

2. their craft is almost completely dependent on a good service/pass, etc.

3. they are always open.

4. if the pass isn't perfect they go all in on drawing a foul, because they are owed hte foul.

5. when they hit a dry spell they pout and blame their teammates passes as the reason for their lack of production.

6. when they score they rarely acknowlege the person who set them up, but rather tell the world it's about time they let the big dog eat.

To say who is the worst is really a toss up because they have all reached the pinnacle of their respective sport.  And then you have hockey players...

The Dutch made the game ugly….and are not playing in the semifinals.

I stand by my preference that I’d prefer the referee swallow his whistle instead of blow it.

Really? You must have been watching a different match. Most of the cards the ref showed were for relatively minor offences. Where he went wrong was not being consistent. First deliberate hanball by Argentina was a yellow card. Than Messi does the same minutes later: no card. Argentinans (like tonight against Croatia) are playing very close to the limit (not over it most of the time), but fall over at the faintest touch or they just stick their foor or leg between the opponents leg and drop: ref granted them the free kick. And sometimes even a yellow card for the Dutch player. Only nasty foul i saw was the one where Ake was tackled followed by the shot into the dug out. How that didn’t get a more fierce reprimande by the ref is beyond me.

weird World Cup this is. I really liked how the German team played, that Musiala, what a player. Loved seeing him play. They were unfortunate, i guess you could do this competition again in two weeks and they could win it (and we could have four different semi finalists).
Canada was enjoyable to watch as well. If only they had a bit more smartness/experience and they could have scored much more.

Wow another absolutely shocking ref....that is never in a million years a penalty 🤣🤦 didn't even go to var. Just shows they actually don't know the game at all.....it's just Argentinas year

I admit I'm puzzled by your reaction.  I thought it was 100% a penalty.

No offense intended, but is it a CRonaldo thing?

The player ran into the keeper on purpose after making a mess of the shot, the keeper actually stops....don't blame ref but surely that's what var is for. It's an shocking decision which this world cup has excelled in. Where exactly is the keeper meant to go? Blimey Keane, Neville and co where going mad at it.....it shows the refs simply haven't played the game at all. Needs retired players in var to help, because that's never a penalty in a millions years.

And what Ronaldo got to do with it??

I'm sorry, it's spillover from a coworker who is heavily anti-Argentina due to his being a big Madrid and CR fan.  With Messi having spent so much time at Barca...  😉

I see it differently, my take is Alvarez had no chance to avoid the keeper.  For what little it's worth, the commentators working that broadcast here called it a stone penalty.  <shrug>

I am on the non-side.  I feel like a player can play the ball and as long as they don’t play the man then that person has a right to be where they are.

the keeper didn’t play the man… did Álvarez?  He may have, but the keeper standing still did not.

but I am not a referee, but I would not have given a pk.  I will say, the different reactions just prove how difficult it really is to be a referee.

Fair enough......not that it made any difference, Argentina were by far the better side and would have won anyway. Good final thou, can't call a winner

Watching that over and over….I don’t envy the referee. There is a totally legit argument either way, and I am glad not to have had to make that call. I honestly can’t say if that was a PK. I lean “no” but with no conviction at all.

I recall when this WC was awarded there was outcry, and plenty of it justified, but one of the "issues" was the whole idea you can't have this tournament outside of its typical June/July window cause..reasons.

Given that here in NA the soccer season has no been impacted like the other countries, has this opened up the idea of playing this tournament at different times of the year?  Or will this turn out to be a one-off?  Personally I know I'm watching more given I'm outside less, but I wonder what the longer term impact will be of this?

Thoughts at halftime of the Final...

Most of the Argentina players are illustrating why I'm generally not a fan of their nation, or their nation's players in Club Football. The absurd embellishment and attempts to draw cards against opponents.  The early Giroud "incident" 🙄 in a set piece near the ARG area being one prime example.

Messi is possibly the only one of their players I can stand, honestly.

They've clearly been the best side so far.  France look sluggish?  Out of their element?

Of course, we go to Extra Time.    LOL

Argentina do the same thing they did with Netherlands.  Couldn't hold the lead.

Will never happen again, the European leagues are way too powerful to let it happen again. In the end, it really hasn't changed much but going to the game on Wednesday is going to feel abit wired at first
