First off, girls don't belong in rock n roll 😅, but if we have to pick, let's do it.  I don't necessarily shoot for vocal clarity because that would be an Adele, Houston, Clarkson, festival.

 

First on my list, though they not listed in order, is:

 

Chrissy Hynde, when she opens her mouth, you know exactly who it is and it is raw and fantastic.

Joni Mitchell, Coyote on the Last Waltz is one of the finest tracks I have ever heard, and her work with cocaine nosed Neil on Helpless is fantastic.

Natalie Merchant, like Chrissy she isn't the most technical, but she is really great.

Gwen Stefani, I actually went to Vegas to see her (and the RCHP) this past year, and she sounds just like she sounds on the record.  I was impressed by her, and I do like the No Doubt stuff.

Patti Smith, there is just something haunting about her and the mark she left on many of the alternative bands that came after her is remarkable.

Even though I've listened to opera my whole life (my parents' first date was an opera), I've never gotten used to the voices of female opera singers. To me, they all sound like Mrs. Doubtfire getting a happy ending. So, needless to say, there won't be any opera singers on my list.

 

My list could change every day, I guess. It's kind of subjective opinion. People who I'd likely put on a list the most would be Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Bassey, Martina McBride, Judy Garland, Karen Carpenter, Eva Cassidy...and if I don't stop now, I'll never finish. Someone I found recently is Mina Okabe. She's on Spotify, if you're interested.
