I played in a Nationwide event (now Korn Ferry) with Todd and the guy has always had a knack for the traditional styled equipment.  He had some of the most gorgeous Napa style putters from Scotty that I had ever seen.

In the Persimmon Golf Society on Bookface, a podcast with Todd Demsey as guest was shared.  In there, he explains why he didn't play a persimmon driver.  Drivers made from 2001 forward have to be on the conforming list.  As part of that conformance testing, they're run through the CT test.

 

Apparently persimmon drivers don't react well to the CT test, they read as hotter than they actually are, due to the nature of the material (wood).  Goofy, but what do you expect?  😉

 

Older drivers are grandfathered, so if Todd wished to use something from the 90s and earlier, he could.

Thanks for that NRJyzr. Was wondering what the reason was. It’s silly that based on that ‘test’ a driver that was conforming the rules for a 100 years and provides zero distance advantage can be prohibited for play this way. Same goes for hickories (guessing that 99% wouldn’t conform to the groove rule).

Todd is a small club builder so his “modern” persimmons he makes now fall into the post 2001 category.   Not sure how these builders can get their equipment tested if at all.

In the podcast he was on, Todd mentioned he'd sent woods in, but they were failing the CT test, due to wood being softer.  The testing mechanism would maintain contact with the face longer, such as it would for a metal wood with too much trampoline effect.

 

This is where the common sense should step in.  It's solid wood with essentially a plastic or fiber based insert.  It's not a magic hot material, or everyone would already be using it.

 

On Facebook, someone offered to send Todd an old MacGregor persimmon.  The pre-2001 drivers are grandfathered, he would be able to use such a club in competition.

 

If one could be found, he'd be able to use a 90s Smart Driver, also.

The words common sense and the usga are never used together. The bow ties are far too busy with pressing matters like  changing hazards to “penalty areas” and halved to “tied”…..

Old thread I know, but I did notice that Todd made it back into the finals this year. He looks to still be using persimmon fairways and a putter.

The putter he is using is pretty sweet, looks like the fairway is a 6 wood? He mentioned he used it quite a bit last year.

He seems like one of the coolest guys in golf. I ordered a driver from him last year and he was super cool through the whole process.
