"You're too young for a cart"

Foxx

Recommended Posts

I've walked thousands of rounds then pushed a Clicgear another thousand. I'm 57, I've torn my acl twice and have a worsening back haha. Most times these days I'm riding a cart. I walk at Cabot and a few easy walking courses through the season. I say do whatever will keep you playing the longest.

“You’re not too old to get punched.”

I prefer walking. I ride when it’s over 100 degrees or the course isn’t really designed for walking.

I'm generally a walker but its pretty silly to criticize anyone for using a cart.  Not that anyone needs a reason beyond "I want to use a cart", but there are untold numbers of valid reasons to use one and plenty of reasons why someone might *need* to use one.

If anything I get irked by people that *should* be using carts and don't and cause slow play.

Is someone just making that comment in a jokey way? Or are they actually not letting you have a cart because they think you are too young?

If it's just a cart guy busting your chops, just tell him you're preserving your body so you don't look like him when you're older....There, see little give and take.

... While I certainly see some older golfers occasionally abusing the course with carts, I see many more young players that are just in their own worlds. I used to play with a greenskeeper and his 2 biggest gripes was parking the cart a few feet off the path on the tee box and destroying the grass, and taking their carts next to greens especially where water runs off and the ground is soft. I see soooooooooo many young guys with music loud enough to hear a couple holes away, driving right next to tee boxes and literally almost on the greens. I am always amazed at how inconsiderate and or lazy they are to not want to take 2 extra steps by keeping the cart on the path next to the boxes.

... Fwiw, I see lots of younger players walking my home course as well as riding and being respectful of their surroundings and other players. It is the few that really stand out and give younger cart riders a bad name.

... "Valid reasons" is something we don't know and should never make assumptions. Long story short, my Mom had knee surgery and we couldn't find a handicap space as they were all full. I dropped her off at the door and when walking up to meet her saw two young girls in a big SUV park in a handicap spot that just opened, hopped out laughing and skipping to the door. I looked at them with disdain shaking my head and one of them just went off "F**k you you POS!" and gave me the finger with gusto before getting to the door and wheeling out her paraplegic brother to the SUV that had a gate lowering for his entry. Lesson learned because you never know what someone else is dealing with regardless of what it might look like.

Telling any particular individual they "should" be walking instead of riding is both presumptuous and rude. Don't do that.

But, as a general statement, I think it would be a good trend if more walked where possible, and if more courses allowed it, where possible. I firmly believe it's a really nice way to enjoy the game. It should be be better promoted as a general practice, but don't make anyone feel bad for riding.

They say it in a joking way. But they are not really joking, and its wearing thin. It is said here in Australia a lot.

I've heard it 100 times. And again today.

I like that reply haha. I'm going to have to start using those types of replies now.

Ride if you want, walk if you want. It's a friggin hobby.

All the people I play with ride and I always walk.

I will say though there is a small advantage when playing a match against people that ride while you walk.  The tiredness factor is a reality near the end of the 18.  Btw, I'm 67

I noticed that too in two separate rounds I played this year on hilly courses. I was spent by the 13th hole on both courses and it probably hurt my score by at least 1 stroke. I'm 60.

From a serious perspective, I actually watched two guys flip a golf course over the curb, jump out as it rolled half-way down a mountainside, another guy drove off a cliff, dropped 50ft and kill himself.  These were sober men.

I still walk at 70, when the opportunity presents itself but ride more often these days.  Walking in SoCA is problematic. Taking a cart is age-dependent, if for no other reason than liability.

IMO on frosty mornings, it can be difficult to turn a cart's tire away from the curb when the steering wheel dramatically flips in the opposite direction, almost losing cart control.  If full grown man struggles at times to handle a cart, youngsters without D.Lic surely shouldn't be allowed.

I said it once, to a teenager, but have thought it more than that.  My 'issue' with it is two-fold - one, it just seems like an act of entitlement when the golfers are younger, and two, it's not how golf was meant to be played.  I also think riding detracts from some of the enjoyment of the game.  As for speed, as a walker, I've never gone slower than two people in a cart.  Carts are really only faster if they are being used solo and it's not cart path only.

That said, as long as you are respectful of the course and other golfers and aren't riding so you can post youtube videos of you or your buddies abusing the course's equipment, just smile and do what you want.  But if you haven't tried walking and don't have some physical limitation, I highly recommend it.

The annoying part is when they make that comment without knowing your situation. They just presume you are young so should be walking.

I'm buggered after a weeks work. It's my rest and relax. Also a treat on the weekend. But other golfers make you feel like your doing the wrong thing.

A young bloke I work with who has a permanent condition where he can't walk properly, told me he and his mate had the same comment made to them once while in a cart.

This is my response, which I've used many times. -

Young has nothing to do with it. I walk miles and work hard all week. Why would I want to do more on the weekend?

I'm getting close to saying something worse. Bit over it.

Is there any chance they are using it in a friendly (but poorly thought out) way of saying hi or as a conversation starter?

Mostly Wishon with a few Tour Edge Exotics, Cobra, Cleveland, and one Odyssey mixed in.

Do I find it a little sad that more of the people in their 70s who play my home course walk than those in their 20s/30s do? Sure. Would I ever make a snide remark to a younger person just because they are riding? Heck no.

I like to walk, but am not a militant walker; I have a temperature limit (generally 85-90 at any point during the round, my tolerance used to be up to 100 when I was a bit younger) and will not walk a course that wasn't designed to be easily walkable. If I the conditions aren't going to be comfortable/enjoyable for walking, I'll ride. I play this game for fun. Could I still walk the course when it's 95 degrees out and not keel over? Sure, but it would be unpleasant, and I'd be beat tired for the rest of the day, so I don't do it. This means I ride most rounds in Phoenix from mid May through September. I don't feel like I am doing anything sacrilegious if I decide not to walk a particular round.

Many years ago I made a comment to a fellow member at a club I belonged to at the time, jokingly asking why a certain other member always wears long pants even in the middle of summer and was pretty much the only member who did that. I had assumed since he was a low single digit player who won many club tournaments, he was trying to dress the part as a "pro", some kind of poseur. I was then told that the pants-wearer had a prosthetic leg, was self-conscious about it, and didn't want people staring or asking questions about it. That taught me to not make assumptions like that, fortunately that one didn't end up too embarrassing for me. It could have been very embarrassing had I asked the pants wearer directly.

I’ve been riding for 30 years and not once have I ever heard this. I walk too and per my Fitbit walking only gets you around 13,000 steps vs a little over 10,000 riding so you’re really not getting that much more exercise pushing a cart. Still prefer walking, just sayin’.

Not sure the distance of 13,000 steps, but when I walk, I get about 8.5 miles over our 18 holes.  No way riding a cart is even close to 8 miles walking.
