Jumbo grips effect on swingweight and best way to counteract it

Recommended Posts

I want to switch out my grips from MCC Plus 4 to CP Wrap Jumbo. Buddy has them and they feel great. Looking for something easier on my joints and hoping for lighter grip pressure. I've seen some threads on here about how it changes swingweight, but I also have seen some say it's not a big deal because the weight is in your hands. Some people have even said to just take off your wedding ring. MCC is 50 grams and CP is 80. From what I've read that's 6-7 swingweight points. That seems like a lot. I'm going to put on a couple and see how it feels before doing the whole set. So if it is noticeable what's the best way to fix it? Would I have to get someone to take the heads off and put in tip weights? Lead tape? They're brand new JPX 923 HMP. Would I send the irons back to Mizuno, or should the same person do the irons and woods? Appreciate the responses. Thank you.

Don't know if you have tried any of the Jumbomax Ultralight grips, they are right at 50 grams. I'm sure they have a size equivalent to the CP Wrap jumbo.

Because the balance point for the swingweight scale is about 14" from the butt end of the grip, changing the weight of the grip causes the swingweight scale to show a different value.  But, when you swing the club, you're holding the grip so the balance point is in your hands, not 14" down from the grip.  That's why changing the grip doesn't affect the way the weight of the shaft and clubhead feels in your hands*.  That's why, as @Socrates points out, you shouldn't chase a particular swingweight value when changing grips.  Play with them and then adjust to get the proper feel, not the number on the scale you think you want.

*The caveat here is that you are changing the *total* weight of the club along with the size and style of the grip, which might make the club feel completely different to you, but that's not about swingweight at that point.

FYI JumboMax STR8 Ultra-Lite XS is still bigger than CP2 Wrap Jumbo.

I easily prefer the feel of the CP2 Jumbo, but moreso like the added total weight of the CP2 Wrap Jumbo.

I build my sets to Swing-Weight taking into account a 50g grip.  Say my 9i is built to E2.0 ungripped.  Then adding 1 tape and a 50g grip gives about D3 gripped ( 9 SWP ).  But I just install a CP2 Wrap Jumbo or Mid, and do not compenesate for the change in SW.

Good info from all.

As Socrates & others stated above, I think it’s best to pretty much ignore grip weight changes in swingweight figuring.

I’m coming from Jmax Ultralites, also changing to the CP2 wrap Jumbo on my (now back ordered) JPX 923 HMP irons. There’s an almost 40g difference between the two grips. Not worried about SW, after I play with them for a bit I’ll add a little lead tape if it improves the feel

So far I've only received the two FliHi (23 & 26*)hybrids in the set (Recoil ESX F3 shafts)

The grips feel great, clubs feel great. Also put the CP2 wrap jumbo grips on my 54 & 58 RTX Zipcore wedges, love them so far, wouldn’t change a thing. These are with the 70g Rotax graphite wedge shafts. Same for my driver, 5 & 7 woods.

As mentioned, Jumbomax now makes grips that are equivalent in size to a standard jumbo size grip, including a Tour Velvet style. I thought about those, but ultimately liked the feel of the CP2 wraps enough to go with them.

I played the Jumbomax Ultralites in XS for a couple, maybe 3 seasons. Really liked them, but even the XS was just a little larger than my ideal. Also found that some of them got a little slick feeling from bag wear, and they caused some tangling problems in my old bag. Solved that with a new Sun Mountain Sync 14 way bag, now really looking forward to playing the new irons with the CP2’s.

Good luck with the new grips Jerm👍

This thread is why I love golfWRX. Thank you all for the informative responses!! I think I tend to go down rabbit holes when it comes to technical stuff. I'll just play with the clubs and go from there. Thanks for saving me from sending my bag in for likely unnecessary repairs👍🏻

I recently switched from midsize to jumbo, and even that 15 gram increase has been noticeable.  But in a good way.  I would say that I’m benefiting from more total weight.  The clubs are less head heavy but that doesn’t seem to be a problem.  I use very light shafts.

So mark me down on the side of: Its biggest effect is total weight.  Whether you need more total weight is an open question.
