My first iron fitting

Am I going too far???

I have played Titleist 690cb for the last two years, and have decided to get new irons. First, to get a little extra forgiveness, and second, to get 100% fitted as I feel the 690's were never really right for me. I am 6'4", and I have a little bit of an upright swing. I fitted out at 1/2" tall, and 5* upright. I figured going in that I would need to be upright because of my height, but I was thinking 2-3*. I play to a 7 right now, and my iron miss has always been a weak push, so this adjustment makes sense. Do you guys think the 5* is a little to much for someone who has always played standard length and loft irons? Thanks for all your input.

5*'s upright is alot, but with a "standard, on plane" swing you would be in the 2-3* range. With your swing being more upright 5* upright doesn't sound unrealistic. I assume you were fitted with a lie board and impact tape outside? Impact tape doesn't lie. The only thing I will say is that if you ever flatten your swing out, you'll need to get you clubs adjusted.

My advice, go to www.pinggolf.com and they have a fitting section that you can put your information in (height, wrist to floor, etc..) and that will give you a static reading, meaning, a baseline for what a person with your build would be best fit with.

 

Now take that information and demo some clubs with those specs at a range or during a demo day, if you don't feel comfortable with them, try shorter length, or more upright/flat.

 

This may be your best bet, but with the static fitting info you'll have a great starting point for what might work best, and from there you can make adjustments.

Exactly the same as me. I'm 6.3 and my swing is more upright. My irons are 4* up, so 5* isnt unrealistic. Make sure its done correctly, as it can leave marks on your clubs.

My brother who is about 6'3" was fitted at HotStix and was put into a set of Mizuno MP-57's at 6* up and +1". His swing is upright, and I have never seen him more consistent with his irons.

 

I'm about 6'5", but with a flatter swing plane than my brother. I spec out at 4* up and + .75".

 

Your numbers don't seem unreasonable, especially at your height with an upright path.

Thanks for all of the replies. This was done on a board with the impact tape, and I feel like it did make a difference and that I was hitting the ball solidly. It just made me wonder how much I have been giving up since all my previous irons were obviously a terrible fit for me. It makes me alot more comfortable that there are others out there in the same situation. On the website it said based on just static info it should be 3*, I guess I should have included that this was a ping i10 fitting, and that the irons will be coming from the factory. Thanks again, and I welcome any more feedback I can get.

5*'s off on the lie angle would throw your short irons off target to the right by 30-35 feet.........that's huge. I was fitting on Ping's static fitting and came out 3* upright but the lie board said standard to 1* flat. It really has to do with your swing plane.
