Which putter style should LAB next make?

Recommended Posts

With LAB recently coming out with both Fang  and Anser (do NOT call it Newport) style putters, in addition to the 2.1 DF and Bullseye style B2, I thought it would fun to see which style you would like to see them come out with next?

My personal vote would be an 8802 (Napa for those who only know Scotty).

Seems like mallets are easier to balance would a crescent/half moon mallet make sense at some point? I know not everyone likes a fang or blade or space ship lol.

Then that's not an 8802 and probably be very hard to balance properly due to the size.

The blade was exactly what I wanted to see.  I guess it would be nice to see something with more of an Anser/ Newport shape for those of us that prefer the softer bumpers over the Anser2/Newport 2 style.  That said, I would be unlikely to buy it when I already will own the link.1.
A blocky mallet similar to the Spider X would be nice and popular I would imagine, although would not be for me personally.
I suppose the best thing would be if they could accomplish the stability of the DF in a more palatable and smaller shape.  That thing feels so stable and good to me but is just too big/ugly for me to actually put it in play.  I don’t know if it’s possible to get that sort of stability in a smaller package and possibly cover up some of the weirdness but that would be a hit (although I still would probably stick with the Link as I just aim blades so much better).

A My Day shape, in some sort of aged finish that replicates manganese bronze, and which isn't overly blocky and squared-off nor afflicted with OTT milling marks.

A smaller DF 2.1.  I know you’ve (LAB) stated that it is what it is and a smaller 2.1 isn’t in the near plans, but a smaller 2.1 would definitely and legitimately up your game. Newer shapes wouldn’t. A smaller 2.1 would get it in the hands of more PGA Tour players and that would lead to more curiosity and sales by the general public. The reason the Mezz sells is because it’s smaller, simpler, cleaner-looking than the 2.1.

Would a smaller 2.1 cannibalize the OG? Of course. Every OEM worries about things like this but in reality it doesn’t affect or hurt the new product or the OG product. It actually will enhance both as more choices exist for the consumer.

Does LAB currently offer a round grip with an Arm Lock DF or other? I tried their armlock at a PGA SS but it had a flat sided grip, which makes it awkward unless the flat is perfectly where your forearm happens to be at your setup... a round grip would be great.

I've already ordered a DF 2.1 but have tried out armlock with a Cameron Futura 2002 and the armlock grip... so the LAB armlock where the angle of shaft entry to head is custom to your desired setup would be excellent - just need that round grip.

Something round, like a Golo or Rossie type shape.

Its sort of the opposite of what they did with the Mezz and the Mezz Max.  They started smaller and then went larger.

We do offer the 21" Jumbo max which is just a long skinny pistol type grip. This is my preference as well

I’m going to try to resurrect this zombie thread, because I believe in it.

LAB, I am BEGGING you for an 8802 style (the 8802.1? The DF8803? 🤓).  I know it won’t look perfect, but I promise to buy at least one.  I think a super heavy heel side could make it possible.

I am also interested to see if LAB starts coming out with different finishes/materiels  (copper, oil can) or inserts.

I'm not an engineer, but I'm having a difficult time understanding what you are asking for? Seems like a pure heel shafted putter would want to swing excessively open then shut to the shaft plane however you balance them, which is what LAB is trying to avoid.

I think trying to get around the shaft lean and the press grips is, or at least should be, high on their priority list. Several other brands have had a go at releasing "torque free" putters, all with different design philosophies and most of them without the shaft lean. I know LAB doesn't find any of these putters perfect (obviously), but I still believe there is more to be explored. I've had both the B.2 and Link.1 putters which of course don't have the shaft lean, but I don't find they offer much (or anything if I'm honest) compared to other centre shafted putters. If they could make a half or full mallet that offered more stability and a stronger sense of the head wanting to stay square to the plane than the B.2 or Link.1 does without the needed shaft lean, I think it would be very interesting. Probably pretty tricky though, or else they would likely already have released it. 🙃

I agree there’s no way that the hosel on a LAB 8802 could go directly into the heel.  But I think they could figure out a way to “backload it” (tons of weight ports towards the heel) and get the hosel in about 80% towards the heel and balance from there.

the 8802 is easily my favorite head-shape.  Anything remotely in the ball-park of this with LAB would immediately become my main.

regardless, I’m interested in seeing what LAB has in the chamber - link.2?  A spider-type?  A Rosie?  The DF3 will probably be their “2 ball” (their biggest, most popular) but it def won’t be their last model.

I love the Mezz Max style so I would like to see an updated version of the Mezz Max.  Maybe increase the length of the fangs just a bit and soften the angles.

Having Played THE 8802 for 37+ years, I agree 💯 Brotha‼️

Anyone that has Played the 8802 for any length of time would probably agree with me.

Put it this way....

If you need a LAB rendition of the 8802, you shouldn't be baggin the 8802 and should probably look at one of their other designs. The 8802 is the ultimate blade putter, and I would say the same thing to an individual asking about increasing the "forgiveness" in the 8802, that I would tell them regarding increasing the forgiveness in a Mizzy blade....

If forgiveness even comes into your train of thought, the 8802 and a Mizzy blade are not the clubs for you. These clubs are 💯 about FEEL!!

The second most critical factor??

FEEL!!!

The whole basis for my Playin the 8802 would be lost in a LAB rendition, as a center shafted 8802 is ludicrous🤪😂😂

This idea is second only to the Gent who suggested spicing up the PGA Championship by taking it international, lol. He was serious as a heart attack, lol

As always, just  my .05 worth🪙

A center shafted B60 style with its soft curves.  Mezz have sharp lines, something about it doesn't work for me.

Edit:   DS72 C style would be close.
